How to Stream Gaming VODs on YouTube Live from a NAS

Use a computer running OBS to read a gaming VOD from your NAS and send it to YouTube Live. Here’s how to set up the source, connect the stream key, and test before broadcast.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stream a gaming VOD stored on a NAS, use the NAS as file storage and a separate computer running an encoder such as OBS to play the video and send it to YouTube Live. YouTube’s encoder workflow requires a stream URL and stream key; a NAS by itself is not the documented streaming setup. Because NAS-share compatibility depends on your setup, test that the encoder computer can read and play the exact file before scheduling a broadcast.

How the NAS-to-YouTube workflow works

The NAS stores the recording. A computer or other suitable encoder host reads the file, OBS plays it as a media source, and the encoder sends the live output to YouTube. YouTube says encoders can “Share your screen or broadcast your gameplay” (YouTube Help: encoder streaming). The NAS-to-host connection is a practical implementation choice, not a configuration specified by YouTube or OBS.

In the usual computer-based setup, the encoder host must remain on, keep access to the NAS file, and maintain a reliable internet connection for the duration of the stream. The NAS does not remove those requirements when it is only supplying the video file.

Check YouTube Live eligibility first

Before preparing the VOD, confirm that your channel can stream. YouTube’s guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave enabling Live until broadcast day. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup guidance.

It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
  • Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
  • The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
  • Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Prepare the video and confirm NAS access

  1. Make the recording accessible to the encoder host. Use your NAS’s normal file-sharing setup so the computer running OBS can open the VOD. YouTube and OBS do not specify a universal NAS share configuration; consult your NAS documentation if needed.
  2. Test the exact file from that host. Open or play it from the NAS location, check that video and audio work, and confirm playback is smooth enough for the planned broadcast. Do not assume that a file working on another device proves the encoder host can read it reliably.
  3. Consider a local copy if the network share is unreliable. Copying the VOD to the encoder computer can help distinguish a NAS-access problem from a media or encoder problem. This is an optional troubleshooting step, not a YouTube requirement.

Choose the OBS source for one VOD or a playlist

One video: Media Source

In OBS, add a Media Source to a scene and select the VOD. OBS describes it as: “Media source adds different types of media files to your scenes.” The OBS Project page is dated January 11, 2022: OBS Media Sources. Its listed video types include MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM; listed audio types include MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Those lists do not guarantee every codec variant or NAS share will work, so test the actual file.

Several videos: VLC Video source

For an ordered or looping playlist, OBS documents the VLC Video source; VLC must be installed. Set up the playlist in the source, then test order, looping, transitions, and sound before going live. A playlist that appears correctly configured can still fail if a file cannot be read from the NAS or is not playable on the host.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule an encoder stream and select the stream settings appropriate for the broadcast.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the encoder’s stream configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before relying on it again. YouTube’s encoder setup is described at YouTube Help.
  3. Set up your OBS scene. Add the Media Source or VLC Video source, and include any optional titles, camera, or microphone sources you want. A VOD-only broadcast does not require those extras.
  4. Preview before going live. Start the encoder and check the YouTube Live Control Room preview for picture, audio, and stream health. Confirm the NAS file is playing as expected before starting the public event.
  5. Monitor the broadcast. Keep an eye on the encoder and YouTube event throughout the stream. YouTube’s tips also recommend monitoring stream audio and video and checking that a local archive file grows when recording locally: YouTube streaming tips.
  6. End the event cleanly. End the stream in YouTube as directed, then stop the encoder. Confirm any archive and local backup before closing the host.

Plan bandwidth, archives, and DVR for long VODs

  • Upload headroom: YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. This is a YouTube recommendation, not a guarantee against network interruptions; see YouTube’s streaming tips.
  • Automatic archive: YouTube says it automatically archives streams under 12 hours. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, so YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. The 12-hour guidance is from YouTube’s archive help.
  • DVR: With DVR enabled, viewers can pause and rewind during a live stream. YouTube notes limitations for streams longer than 12 hours; see YouTube’s DVR guidance.
  • Copyright and reused material: A VOD being your own gameplay recording does not by itself establish that every included element is cleared for a live broadcast. Check rights for music, overlays, and other third-party material, and follow YouTube’s applicable policies. Do not assume that storing a file on your NAS changes the rights or policy status of its contents.

Troubleshoot common problems

OBS cannot find or open the NAS file

  • Check that the encoder computer can access the NAS share and that the file path selected in OBS is the one available to that computer.
  • Try opening or playing the file outside OBS on the same host. If that fails, resolve share access or file availability first.
  • As a diagnostic, copy the file to the host and try it locally. If the local copy works, investigate the NAS connection rather than assuming the media source is at fault.

The source is added but playback is black, silent, or unstable

  • Test the precise file in OBS; a supported extension does not establish support for every codec or file variant.
  • Check that the source is not muted and that the intended audio is reaching OBS. Preview the stream in YouTube Live Control Room before the public event.
  • For a playlist, verify VLC is installed and test each entry, order, looping, and transitions.

YouTube does not receive the encoder stream

  • Confirm that the encoder has the correct YouTube stream URL and stream key. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder configuration.
  • Check channel eligibility and whether first-time live activation has completed; YouTube says it can take up to 24 hours.
  • Check available upload bandwidth against the total stream bitrate, allowing the 20% headroom YouTube recommends.

The archive is missing or viewers cannot rewind

  • For a broadcast approaching or exceeding 12 hours, keep a local recording: YouTube warns that streams over 12 hours may not be archived.
  • Check whether DVR is enabled and account for YouTube’s stated DVR limitations on streams longer than 12 hours.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, rather than operate your own OBS host, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. The stream runs at the quality uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start your free day.
