How to Stream a 24/7 YouTube Channel from a Synology NAS

Synology’s built-in YouTube Live Broadcast feature is for camera streams. Prerecorded NAS videos need a separate encoder that can loop, publish, and recover reliably.

You can send a live camera feed from a Synology NAS to YouTube using Surveillance Station’s Live Broadcast feature. That documented workflow is for cameras—not for looping prerecorded videos stored on the NAS. For a playlist of files, you need a separate encoder or streaming application that can read the NAS media and continuously publish it to YouTube.

The right setup therefore depends on what “24/7 channel” means: a camera that broadcasts continuously, or prerecorded videos that play in a loop. The NAS model, DSM version, Surveillance Station availability, camera compatibility, and internet upload capacity also affect what will work.

First choose the kind of 24/7 stream

What you want to broadcast Relevant approach What the Synology documentation establishes
A live camera feed Surveillance Station’s Live Broadcast feature It sends a selected live camera stream to YouTube and requires H.264 video, a YouTube RTMP path, and a stream key.
Prerecorded videos stored on the NAS A separate encoder or streaming application Synology’s documented Live Broadcast feature does not establish playlist looping or prerecorded-media broadcasting.

Video Station is for managing and streaming video collections to supported client devices; that is not the same as publishing a YouTube live broadcast. Synology’s DSM 7.2 technical specification also says Video Station is unavailable on DSM 7.2.2. Neither local playback nor file storage proves that a NAS can transmit a continuous playlist to YouTube.

Before you configure the NAS

  • Check your setup: identify the NAS model, DSM version, installed Surveillance Station version, and whether the feature is available for your system. Synology package availability and menus can vary by version and model.
  • Confirm the source: for the built-in route, you need a camera available in Surveillance Station. Check Synology’s compatibility information for the exact NAS and Surveillance Station setup before buying or configuring a camera.
  • Use H.264: Synology’s Live Broadcast help says its YouTube broadcast feature supports H.264 video. Verify that the selected camera stream profile supplies a compatible H.264 stream.
  • Check upstream capacity: the connection’s upload speed must sustain the chosen stream. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and monitoring stream health; a speed test alone does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
  • Have YouTube access ready: create or schedule the live stream in YouTube Studio and obtain its ingest path and stream key. Treat the key like a password.

Synology describes the feature this way: “The Live Broadcast application provides a simple interface that allows you to send live camera streams to YouTube.” The detailed steps below follow Synology’s documented camera workflow; labels may differ in your installed version.

Broadcast a camera feed with Surveillance Station

  1. Enable Live Broadcast. In Surveillance Station, open the application management area, enable Live Broadcast, and set its status to on. Consult the help for your installed version if the menu labels differ; Synology’s cited help is version 8.
  2. Prepare the YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and copy the RTMP path and stream key YouTube provides. Do not share or publish the key.
  3. Enter the YouTube destination. In Live Broadcast, enter the RTMP path and stream key as requested by the Synology interface. Synology’s documented route specifies RTMP. Do not assume that every package version accepts an RTMPS address.
  4. Select the camera and profile. Choose the camera you want to broadcast and its stream profile. Confirm the profile uses H.264 and the resolution and frame rate you intend to send.
  5. Start the broadcast and verify it in YouTube. Use the Live Broadcast controls to begin sending the camera stream, then check the YouTube preview and stream health before relying on it. Test with representative movement and audio if the camera setup includes audio.

The feature is a camera-to-YouTube path, not a general NAS media player. Synology’s Surveillance Station specifications for DSM 7.4 list RTMP over TCP among supported streaming tunnel formats and say Live Broadcast sends camera streams to YouTube; this does not establish identical availability or performance on every NAS model.

Configure stream quality for a stable broadcast

Choose a stream the internet connection can sustain rather than selecting the highest possible resolution by default. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends a representative test before going live, monitoring stream health, using constant bitrate (CBR), and setting the keyframe interval to two seconds (not more than four). YouTube supports up to 60 fps.

Synology 4-Bay DiskStation DS925+ (Diskless)
  • Supports drives on the model's official compatibility list
  • Up to 522/565 MB/s sequential read/write throughput supports stable data transfers.
  • Dual 2.5GbE ports provide fast network transfer speeds and increased redundancy.
  • Leverage built-in file and photo management, data protection, virtualization, and surveillance solutions.
  • Backed by Synology's 3-year limited hardware warranty.
  • Bitrate: use YouTube’s bitrate table for the actual resolution, frame rate, and ingest codec. As one specific reference, YouTube lists 4 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 240p–720p at 30 fps. This is not a universal bitrate for other resolutions or frame rates.
  • Keyframes: set a two-second interval where the encoder exposes that setting; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Rate control: use CBR for a general encoder workflow, as YouTube recommends. If the camera profile or Synology interface does not expose the setting, do not assume it is configurable there.
  • Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS for general live ingestion. The Synology Live Broadcast help specifically documents an RTMP path and key, so confirm what your installed Synology version accepts instead of silently substituting RTMPS.

YouTube also supports HLS ingest for compatible encoders. HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments and requires an encoder capable of its protocol and settings. It is not evidence that Synology’s Live Broadcast feature supports HLS.

If you want to loop prerecorded NAS videos

Use a separate encoder or streaming application; the built-in camera broadcast feature does not document this workflow. Do not choose a particular NAS-native package or container without verifying it for your model and software versions. Before committing to an implementation, confirm all of the following:

  • Secure private cloud - Enjoy 100% data ownership and multi-platform access from anywhere
  • Easy sharing and syncing - Safely access and share files and media from anywhere, and keep clients, colleagues and collaborators on the same page
  • Automated Backup Protection - Set-and-forget backups for Macs, PCs and mobile devices to multiple destinations including cloud and external drives
  • Home Security System - Record and monitor your property 24/7 with support for multiple IP cameras and remote viewing
  • 2-Year Warranty - Reliable hardware backed by Synology's expert customer support team and ongoing software updates
  • It can read the videos from the NAS media path, including the permissions and network path it will use.
  • It can loop or schedule the files continuously, in the order and transition behavior you need.
  • It can encode YouTube-compatible output, including a suitable video codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval.
  • It supports a YouTube ingest protocol accepted by your setup. For a general encoder workflow, YouTube recommends RTMPS; HLS is another option only when the encoder supports HLS and its required configuration.
  • It can reconnect after network interruptions, and you have verified what happens after the encoder, NAS, router, or power supply restarts.
  • Your chosen NAS model and software can handle the encoder workload. Media storage and local playback alone do not establish that the NAS can encode and publish a live stream.

For this workflow, test a full representative playlist before depending on it: check YouTube’s preview and stream health, confirm the loop behaves as intended, and observe recovery after a controlled interruption. Continuous uptime is not guaranteed by the cited Synology or YouTube documentation.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause to check What to do
Live Broadcast or the expected menu is missing Package availability or interface differences by NAS model, DSM, or Surveillance Station version Check the model’s package support and the help for the installed version; do not rely on steps for a different release.
YouTube does not receive video Incorrect RTMP path or stream key, wrong selected source, or an incompatible camera profile Recheck the destination values in YouTube Studio, select the intended camera, and verify that its profile uses H.264.
The camera stream cannot be selected or does not start Camera compatibility, availability in Surveillance Station, or an unsupported stream profile Confirm the camera is configured and available in Surveillance Station, then try a supported H.264 profile.
Stream health is poor or the broadcast drops Upload capacity may be insufficient or unstable for the selected quality Test the upstream connection, lower the stream’s quality or bitrate to a sustainable level, and monitor YouTube’s stream health during a representative test.
Prerecorded files play locally but not on YouTube Local NAS playback is not a live publishing workflow Use a separate encoder that can access the NAS files, loop them, encode for YouTube, and reconnect; verify the complete chain before relying on it.
RTMPS or HLS settings do not work in Synology Live Broadcast The documented Synology route specifies an RTMP path/key; the cited feature documentation does not establish RTMPS or HLS support Use the protocol documented for your installed feature, or select a separate encoder whose supported ingest protocol matches YouTube’s requirements.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 loop of prerecorded videos rather than a live camera, StreamNeo is a YouTube cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a home computer, OBS, or home connection staying on. It streams uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
