How to Stream from Wirecast to BoxCast

Use BoxCast’s RTMP or SRT source for a direct Wirecast connection, or route Wirecast’s secondary display output through a BoxCaster. Here are the required settings and troubleshooting steps.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To send a Wirecast production to BoxCast, schedule a broadcast in the BoxCast Dashboard, then send Wirecast’s output using a BoxCast RTMP or SRT source. You can also route Wirecast’s secondary display output to a BoxCaster hardware encoder. For most software-only setups, use RTMP if you have its server URL and stream key; choose SRT if your account provides SRT settings and you can configure stereo audio at 48 kHz.

Before you start

  • Schedule the BoxCast broadcast in the Dashboard before configuring the direct RTMP or SRT workflow. The source settings you need—such as a server URL and stream key, or SRT connection values—come from the Dashboard. See BoxCast’s Wirecast + BoxCast guide.
  • Keep your stream key private. Do not show it in screenshots or share it publicly.
  • For RTMP, BoxCast’s general encoder guidance says third-party RTMP ingestion supports H.264, not H.265/HEVC. Check the codec selected in Wirecast if the connection does not work: Any RTMP-Compatible Encoder + BoxCast.

Method 1: Connect Wirecast to BoxCast with RTMP

  1. Create or select an RTMP source: In the BoxCast Dashboard, open Sources and create or select an RTMP source. Copy its Server URL and Stream Key. BoxCast describes adding a source in Add a New RTMP Source.
  2. Set Wirecast’s destination: In Wirecast, open Output > Output Settings. Set Destination to RTMP Server.
  3. Enter the source details: Paste the BoxCast server URL into the address field and the stream key into the stream field. If Wirecast presents a combined URL field instead, follow the format shown by that interface. Save the destination if you expect to reuse it.
  4. Start the feed: Confirm the broadcast is scheduled in BoxCast, then press Stream in Wirecast. BoxCast says a broadcast can go live at its scheduled time even if the encoder starts sending earlier. For this specific Wirecast pairing, BoxCast recommends starting Wirecast two to three minutes before the scheduled start; leave time to verify the signal.

If the RTMP connection fails

BoxCast-generated RTMP source URLs default to RTMPS. BoxCast’s Wirecast instructions say standard Wirecast versions do not support RTMPS and advise removing the “s” from the server URL when needed—for example, changing rtmps://rtmp.boxcast.com/live to rtmp://rtmp.boxcast.com/live. Check the capabilities of your installed Wirecast version before changing protocols, and use the URL form BoxCast provides for your source.

Method 2: Connect Wirecast to BoxCast with SRT

  1. In the BoxCast Dashboard, open Sources, select the SRT source, and view its Wirecast configuration values.
  2. In Wirecast, open Output > Output Settings and set the destination to SRT: Secure Reliable Transport.
  3. Enter the Dashboard’s Address, Port, Passphrase, and Stream ID. Leave the passphrase blank if encryption is disabled.
  4. Configure encoder audio as stereo, 48 kHz. BoxCast warns that other settings may produce no audio or audio that sounds incorrect to viewers.
  5. Schedule the BoxCast broadcast and start Wirecast before the scheduled start so the feed is ready. BoxCast’s Wirecast-specific guide recommends beginning two to three minutes early.

Method 3: Send Wirecast’s display output to a BoxCaster

This optional route uses a BoxCaster hardware encoder instead of sending the production directly from Wirecast over RTMP or SRT. BoxCast says hardware encoding relieves the computer from encoding video and audio, and its encoder can use BoxCast communication protocols. The hardware workflow also gives BoxCast support additional broadcast data and logs. Confirm your computer’s video output and the encoder’s connection requirements before relying on this setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect Wirecast’s secondary video output to the BoxCaster using a compatible connection.
  2. In Wirecast, open Output > Multi-Viewer Output > Configure Displays.
  3. Set the output monitor to 1920×1280, choose Full Screen, set labels to Do Not Draw Labels, and select Live.
  4. Choose the appropriate display output for the connected BoxCaster, then verify the feed and scheduled broadcast in BoxCast.

An HDMI cable may be needed for a compatible hardware setup, but it is not required for the direct RTMP or SRT workflows.

Which connection should you choose?

Path What you enter or need Best fit
RTMP Server URL and stream key from a BoxCast RTMP source; third-party RTMP ingestion supports H.264, not H.265/HEVC, according to BoxCast’s general guidance. A direct software connection when an RTMP source is available.
SRT Address, port, stream ID, and passphrase if encryption is enabled; stereo audio at 48 kHz. A direct software connection when SRT settings are available and you can meet the audio requirement.
BoxCaster Compatible secondary video output and connection to the hardware encoder; Wirecast display configuration. Operators who already have a BoxCaster and want the hardware encoder path.

BoxCast’s setup pages describe the operational differences, but do not establish through a controlled benchmark that one method is best for every broadcaster. Choose based on the source types your Dashboard exposes, your encoding capacity, and whether compatible BoxCaster hardware is already available.

Troubleshooting

Wirecast will not connect to the RTMP server

  • Check that the server URL and stream key match the RTMP source in the BoxCast Dashboard.
  • If the generated URL begins with rtmps://, check whether your installed Wirecast version supports RTMPS. BoxCast advises removing the “s” and using the RTMP form when needed.
  • Confirm the RTMP video codec is H.264 rather than H.265/HEVC, which BoxCast says is not currently supported for third-party RTMP ingestion.

The SRT feed has no audio or sounds wrong

Set Wirecast’s encoder audio to stereo at 48 kHz, as specified in BoxCast’s Wirecast SRT instructions. Also verify the SRT address, port, stream ID, and passphrase against the Dashboard values.

The broadcast is not live at the expected time

Check that the BoxCast broadcast was scheduled and that Wirecast is sending to the source associated with it. BoxCast’s Wirecast-specific guide recommends starting two to three minutes early. Its general RTMP guide instead recommends ten to fifteen minutes; that is a separate, broader RTMP recommendation, not a universal timing rule for every Wirecast setup. See BoxCast’s general RTMP encoder guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The BoxCaster is not receiving Wirecast’s output

Verify that Wirecast is using the display connected to the encoder, that the secondary output is set to the specified full-screen Live output, and that the computer and BoxCaster have compatible output and cable connections.
