How to Rotate Real Estate Videos with FFmpeg and Stream Them from a Folder on YouTube Live

To stream rotated real-estate clips from a folder on YouTube Live, first inspect how each clip is oriented, make an explicit playback order, and process the video with FFmpeg’s rotation filters. Then send the resulting stream to YouTube using its live encoder settings. The commands below are examples: the right rotation, output shape, and file handling depend on your clips and operating system.

1. Inspect the clips and decide what “rotate” means

Rotation can mean correcting a phone clip that is sideways, turning every clip by a chosen angle, or fitting portrait footage into a landscape presentation. These are different jobs. Inspect each source before applying one filter to an entire folder: some files may carry orientation metadata, while others may have pixels that need transforming. Also check dimensions, frame rate, codec, and whether audio is present. FFmpeg documentation is the reference for available options and behavior; exact capabilities can vary with the installed version and build: FFmpeg documentation.

  • Correct orientation: determine whether the displayed orientation comes from metadata or the encoded pixels, then choose a filter that produces the intended visible orientation.
  • Rotate by a fixed angle: use the appropriate rotation filter for the actual correction. Do not assume every clip in a folder needs the same direction.
  • Mixed portrait and landscape: decide whether the output may change shape between clips, whether to pad clips onto one consistent canvas, or whether to crop to fill a consistent canvas. Cropping can cut off property details, so inspect the frame edges before choosing it.

For a quick inspection of one file, use FFprobe if it is included in your FFmpeg installation:

ffprobe -v error -show_streams -show_format "clip.mp4"

Review the video stream’s dimensions, codec, frame rate, and any rotation-related metadata, as well as the audio stream. Repeat for clips that may differ; folder contents are not necessarily uniform.

2. Set a deliberate clip order

FFmpeg does not know which order makes sense for a property tour. Use zero-padded filenames for a simple lexical order, or write a list in the order you want viewers to see. For example, create a UTF-8 text file named clips.txt:

file '01-exterior.mp4'
file '02-entry-and-living-room.mp4'
file '03-kitchen.mp4'
file '04-bedrooms.mp4'

Keep the list and clips in the same directory, or use paths that resolve correctly from the directory where you run FFmpeg. Filenames with apostrophes or unusual characters need careful quoting; test the list with your actual paths rather than assuming this example covers every shell or filename.

3. Rotate and prepare the videos

Choose between a simple filter pass and normalization

A rotation changes video pixels, so it requires video processing; -c copy cannot apply a rotation filter. A straightforward single-file example is:

ffmpeg -i "input.mp4" -vf "transpose=clock" -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -preset medium -c:a aac "rotated.mp4"

transpose=clock is an example for a 90-degree clockwise turn, not a universal correction. Select the filter direction that matches the source and inspect the output. A 180-degree turn or other angle needs a different filter configuration. The example re-encodes video as H.264 and audio as AAC; encoding choices affect file size and quality, and may need adjustment for your installed build and delivery plan.

For multiple clips, process each clip with the appropriate rotation and, if needed, normalize them to compatible dimensions, frame rate, codecs, and audio layout before joining or streaming. If clips already have compatible streams, FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can join them without re-encoding. If properties differ or filtering is required, a filter-based concat workflow with re-encoding is the safer approach. FFmpeg documents the distinction between the concat demuxer and concat filter in its documentation and FAQ. Do not assume that listing mixed files and stream-copying them will create a reliable continuous output.

Keep the output shape intentional

If the clips have different aspect ratios, decide on the target canvas before normalizing. Padding preserves the entire image but leaves unused space around some clips; cropping fills the canvas but can remove content at the edges. For real-estate footage, check doors, windows, room corners, and other details near the frame edges after processing. Use a short output sample to verify that orientation and framing remain correct across transitions.

4. Send the prepared video to YouTube Live with FFmpeg

Create or select a YouTube Live stream in YouTube Studio and copy its stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or leave it in a shared script. Use the ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Current encoder requirements and recommendations are in YouTube’s live encoder settings guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Once you have a single prepared file, a command-line streaming pattern is:

ffmpeg -re -i "prepared.mp4" -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

Replace the ingest URL and key with the values from YouTube Studio. This illustrative command targets H.264 at 1080p30 only if the prepared file is actually 1080p; it does not scale the input to 1080p. For another frame rate or output size, set the encoding options to match that target and choose a bitrate appropriate to it. FFmpeg builds and YouTube’s available ingest details can vary, so verify the command against your installation and Studio settings.

Settings that matter

  • Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
  • Video codec: YouTube’s current guide lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1. H.264 is used in the example.
  • Rate control: use CBR for the live encoder output.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds. At 30 fps, -g 60 requests a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds; match the GOP to the frame rate you use.
  • Bitrate: YouTube currently recommends H.264 at 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 720p30. These are recommendations, not guarantees of picture quality on a weak connection.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3; its current guidance recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Confirm the source has an audio stream and listen for levels, silence, or clipping.
  • Frame rate: YouTube’s listed live encoder settings support up to 60 fps. Avoid needlessly increasing frame rate beyond the source.

For more precise bitrate and encoder options, use the values and explanations in YouTube’s encoder settings guide. The sample command uses a fixed-rate target pattern but should not be treated as a universal preset for every resolution, frame rate, FFmpeg build, or connection.

5. Test before making the stream public

Run a controlled test in YouTube Studio, using an unlisted or otherwise limited-visibility stream if appropriate for your channel. Include moving video and audio representative of the planned broadcast. YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Check YouTube’s streaming tips and monitor Studio’s stream health and messages while testing.

  • Watch a clip from each orientation and confirm it is upright and framed as intended.
  • Listen through clip changes for missing audio, abrupt level changes, or silence.
  • Check that transitions between files do not freeze or interrupt the stream.
  • Measure outbound upload capacity. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate; a speed test alone does not guarantee stable delivery.

6. YouTube Live, copyright, and real-estate footage

Only stream footage and audio you have the right to use. Property video may include licensed music, television audio, artwork, or other material you do not own; permission to film a property does not automatically grant rights to every element captured in the footage. Review YouTube’s current copyright rules and any permissions or releases that apply to your material before broadcasting. A technically successful stream does not establish that the content complies with platform rules. Do not treat repeated or reused footage as automatically eligible for monetization; YouTube’s decisions depend on its current policies and the content and channel context.

7. Troubleshoot common failures

  • The picture is still sideways: the chosen filter direction may be wrong, or orientation metadata may be affecting display. Inspect metadata and the encoded pixels, then test the corrected output in a player and in a short private stream.
  • Some clips look right and others do not: the folder likely contains mixed orientations or metadata. Inspect and process clips individually rather than applying one assumed correction to every file.
  • The concat list fails or playback breaks at a cut: check path quoting and list order. If codecs, dimensions, time bases, or stream layouts differ, normalize and re-encode with a filter-based workflow instead of relying on stream-copy concatenation.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: verify the ingest address and stream key copied from Studio, the RTMPS/RTMP endpoint, and that the key has not been changed or mistyped. Keep the key private.
  • Stream health warns or the picture buffers: the available upload may not sustain the selected total bitrate. Lower the target or resolution and test again, keeping YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom.
  • Video arrives without sound: verify that the source contains an audio stream, that the command maps or encodes it as intended, and that the audio codec and bitrate meet the selected YouTube settings.
  • The image looks soft or details are cut off: check source resolution and the resize, crop, or padding choices. Upscaling cannot restore detail that is absent from the original clip.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to stay live with uploaded videos without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud. • Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery starts if YouTube drops the stream.
