To stream binaural beats without clipping, preserve the intended left and right stereo channels, lower the source and OBS levels until peaks stay safely below digital full scale, and put an OBS Limiter last in the audio filter chain. Then test the actual signal path: check both OBS meters, inspect YouTube’s preview, and listen to a recording before going live.
1. Keep the binaural-beat signal in stereo
In OBS, use stereo audio and add the source that plays your binaural-beat program. While it plays, confirm that both the left and right meters show activity and that the source contains the channel differences you intend to send. OBS lets you enable a mono downmix separately; leave it off when your program depends on distinct left and right channels.

This is a routing check, not a claim about binaural-beat effects. OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide explains how stereo sources are presented to viewers and how downmixing changes that presentation.

Start with the source’s playback or output level, then check the operating-system mixer and the OBS fader. Play the loudest part of the actual program and watch OBS’s peak indicators. OBS explains that audio above 0 dBFS in the final stream or recording can produce clipping distortion; a limiter is a safety ceiling, not a substitute for sensible gain staging.

OBS’s mixer documentation uses -9 dBFS as its “Permitted Maximum Level” reference. It describes the margin as accounting for possible peak-meter discrepancies and alignment across equipment. Treat it as a conservative reference from OBS, not as a YouTube loudness target.
3. Add an OBS Limiter last
- In OBS, open the audio source’s Filters.
- Add the Limiter filter after the other audio filters.
- Play the loudest section, watch the meters, and listen for distortion or unwanted changes while the limiter catches peaks.
OBS says a limiter prevents peaks above 0 dB that can cause clipping and distortion, and should be last in the filter chain. Its documented defaults are a -6.00 dB threshold and 60 ms release. Those are software defaults, not a universal mixing prescription; adjust only after listening and observing the signal. See the OBS Limiter Filter documentation.

If you prepare the audio in Audacity, its limiter’s documented default output level is -1 dB, leaving headroom below full scale before lossy encoding. That can help with the source file, but it does not replace checking OBS and the encoded YouTube stream. See the Audacity Limiter manual.

4. Use YouTube’s stereo audio encoder settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio, a 44.1 kHz sample rate for stereo, and a 128 kbps audio bitrate for stereo when streaming over RTMP or RTMPS. These are encoder settings, not instructions to raise the source level. For audio-led streams, select video settings appropriate to your visual and available upload bandwidth, then test the total stream load. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room against available upload bandwidth.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings and streaming tips before a broadcast, since platform guidance can change.
5. Preview, record, and listen before going live
- Play audio similar in level and content to the program you will stream.
- In OBS, verify both left and right meters, watch the peak indicators, and listen through headphones or a monitor output if available.
- Start a representative recording and play it back. Check for distortion and confirm the stereo routing sounds as intended.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and check the preview, stream health, and any messages before beginning the broadcast.
- During the live stream, keep monitoring OBS peaks and YouTube stream health. OBS’s peak indicator retains the loudest level for 20 seconds, which can help reveal a recent peak.
YouTube recommends a preflight test with audio and video movement similar to the real stream, followed by ongoing stream-quality monitoring. OBS likewise recommends recording a normal session and listening back before going live. Optional monitoring headphones can help you check the signal at the device and as it reaches OBS; they do not prevent clipping by themselves.

Common clipping and routing problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Distortion is present in the recording as well as the stream | The source, system output, OBS input, or processed output is too high. | Lower levels upstream, then check OBS peaks again with the loudest passage. Do not expect the limiter to repair clipping that has already occurred earlier in the chain. |
| OBS meters look safe, but the YouTube preview or stream sounds distorted | The encoded or delivered signal may differ from what you monitored locally. | Review the YouTube preview and stream health, record a representative session, and listen to the recording. Recheck the complete route and encoder settings. |
| Only one channel appears active, or the intended stereo difference is missing | The source may be routed incorrectly, or a mono downmix may be enabled. | Check the source’s left and right activity in OBS and verify the downmix setting and source channel assignments. |
| The limiter seems to be changing the sound too much | The input may be too hot, or the limiter may be doing more than catching occasional peaks. | Reduce source and system levels first, then reassess the OBS fader and limiter while listening. Keep the limiter last in the chain. |
| Audio breaks up while the stream is under load | The stream may exceed stable outbound capacity. | Check YouTube stream health and leave the recommended 20% upload-bandwidth margin; test the full stream load before the event. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded binaural-beat recordings looping on YouTube Live, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos, not live camera input, and your audio still needs to be prepared and checked for clipping before upload. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
