Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to play a text-file playlist in sequence, loop a separate background input with -stream_loop -1, and send the composed, encoded output to the ingestion address and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. These are separate jobs: a playlist does not loop a background by itself, and a looping input does not create a playlist. The example below assumes a text playlist, a video background, and playlist audio; adapt the input paths, streams, and encoding settings to your files and channel.
What this method does—and what counts as a playlist
This guide uses “playlist” to mean a local text file read by FFmpeg’s concat demuxer. It is not the same as a YouTube playlist, a directory of files, or an online feed; those require different input construction. The concat demuxer reads listed media files consecutively. Separately, -stream_loop -1 repeats an input indefinitely. FFmpeg documents both behaviors in its concat demuxer documentation and main command-line documentation.

There are two common meanings of “background video.” It may be a persistent visual layer behind playlist footage, in which case you composite two video streams with a filtergraph. Or it may be the only visible video while the playlist supplies audio; then the video can loop independently while playlist audio plays. The command below implements the first case: playlist video over a looping background, with playlist audio. If your intended output differs, change the filter and explicit audio mapping rather than assuming FFmpeg will choose the right streams automatically.

file '/absolute/path/video-01.mp4'
file '/absolute/path/video-02.mp4'
file '/absolute/path/video-03.mp4'
Use paths that resolve from the directory where you run FFmpeg, or use absolute paths as above. If a filename contains an apostrophe, escape it using concat-demuxer syntax rather than copying this simple example unchanged. The concat demuxer expects files to have the same streams, codecs, and time bases. Inconsistent media or inaccurate duration estimates can cause timestamp gaps or artifacts at transitions; inspect and normalize files when playback stutters, jumps, or develops audio/video timing errors. See the FFmpeg concat documentation.
Check which streams each file contains
Before building the command, identify whether the playlist files and background have video, audio, and the same general format. The example assumes the playlist has both video and audio, and the background has video. A background video with its own audio will not be used here: the command deliberately maps playlist audio only. Decide whether you want playlist audio, background audio, a separate music input, or silence, and map that choice explicitly.

Build the output and send it to YouTube
Use a filtergraph to layer playlist video over the background
Replace the sample paths and the placeholder stream name with your own. Obtain the current ingestion address and stream name/key for the specific broadcast from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room or your API workflow. Never share or publish a real key. The example uses RTMPS and H.264/AAC settings at 1280×720 and 30 fps; it is a documentation-based starting point, not a tested command. Confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the listed options and that the input streams match the assumptions.
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-stream_loop -1 -i /absolute/path/background.mp4
-filter_complex "[1:v]scale=1280:720:force_original_aspect_ratio=increase,crop=1280:720[bg];[0:v]scale=1280:720:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease[fg];[bg][fg]overlay=(W-w)/2:(H-h)/2:shortest=1[v]"
-map "[v]" -map 0:a:0
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGESTION_ADDRESS/YOUR_STREAM_NAME_OR_KEY"
In the command, input 0 is the concat playlist and input 1 is the background because that is their order after the two -i options. The filter scales and crops the background to fill the 1280×720 canvas, scales the playlist footage to fit inside it, then overlays the playlist footage centered over the background. shortest=1 ends the filtered video when the finite foreground playlist ends, even though the background repeats. If the playlist itself must repeat indefinitely, that is a separate requirement: construct a repeating playlist input or otherwise loop the playlist, and test the resulting timestamps and end behavior. Do not mistake the background loop for a loop of the foreground playlist.

The detachable pop filter reduces plosives caused by excited speech during gaming. The stable tripod stand with rubber feet allows for optimal recording positioning via an adjustable thumbscrew, whether you're leaning back or in.
The -re option reads file input at its native rate rather than as fast as possible. The mapping is explicit: the filter output is video, and 0:a:0 selects the first audio stream from the playlist. That mapping fails if the playlist has no audio stream or its files do not present compatible audio streams; remove or replace it to match your audio plan. If you want a background image instead of a video, use an image-input approach with an appropriate duration or image-loop strategy for your FFmpeg build; a video-input loop option is not the only way to provide a persistent visual.
Set encoding to match YouTube’s current guidance
The example’s 4500 kbit/s video rate is illustrative for this particular 720p30 command, not a universal recommendation. YouTube’s live encoder settings give bitrate guidance by resolution and frame rate; consult the current table for your target before changing the example. YouTube lists constant bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and supported RTMP/RTMPS video choices including H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. This example uses the broadly supported H.264 encoder in FFmpeg and AAC audio. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS.

YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. At 30 fps, -g 60 requests a 60-frame GOP (two seconds); if you change frame rate, recalculate the GOP to preserve the interval. The command also sets -keyint_min 60, but encoder behavior can depend on the build and options, so check the output and YouTube’s current guidance. YouTube’s published requirements are not a guarantee that any command will be accepted for every file or channel.

Use your channel’s actual RTMPS ingestion details
Google recommends RTMPS for secure streaming; its RTMPS ingestion guide describes the protocol, port 443, and the ingestion endpoint plus stream name. Use the exact endpoint and key/name supplied for your stream rather than treating the placeholder URL as a universal address. The LiveStreams API reference describes ingestion information and stream health fields. Keep the key secret: anyone with access may be able to broadcast to your stream.

Choose the right variant for your audio and composition
- Background only, playlist audio: Loop the background video and map its video stream; map the playlist’s audio stream. Do not include the playlist-video overlay if you do not want playlist footage visible.
- Playlist video with a background layer: Use a complex filtergraph like the example. Set the foreground scaling, crop, and placement to suit the design and source aspect ratios.
- Separate music or narration: Add that audio as another input, then map its intended stream or use an audio filter to mix it. Verify sample rate, channel layout, and duration behavior; do not rely on automatic stream selection.
- Intentional silence: Omit the audio map only if your intended output and YouTube workflow permit it. If an audio stream is required for your setup, generate or provide one deliberately rather than mapping a nonexistent stream.
- Still-image background: Use an image-input technique with a suitable duration or loop option for your FFmpeg version, then compose it with the playlist video as needed. A still image is not interchangeable with a video input in every command.
For filter details, see FFmpeg’s complex filtergraph documentation and filter documentation. Input numbers and filter labels must follow your actual input order.
Preflight before the intended broadcast
- Resolve every path. Confirm that
playlist.txt, all listed files, and the background file are accessible to the account running FFmpeg. - Check playlist compatibility. Confirm the listed files have compatible stream layouts and timing. Investigate inconsistent durations or timestamps if transitions produce gaps or artifacts.
- Verify the output maps. Confirm that the playlist has the audio stream referenced by
0:a:0, and that your filtergraph labels point to the intended video inputs. - Check encoding and bandwidth. Choose resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, and keyframe interval using YouTube’s current encoder table and your available sustained upload bandwidth.
- Connect using current stream details. Copy the stream-specific RTMPS ingestion details from YouTube and keep the key private.
- Run a representative test. Include typical motion, transitions, and audio. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Watch the stream health in YouTube’s live interface before starting the intended broadcast.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot open a playlist file | Path, permissions, or concat-list quoting is wrong. | Use a path valid from the process’s working directory, check file permissions, and review the concat list’s quoting and escaping. |
| Errors or visual/audio glitches at a playlist transition | Files have incompatible streams, codecs, time bases, or duration/timestamp information. | Inspect the files and normalize the playlist to compatible stream layouts and timing; review concat demuxer constraints in the FFmpeg documentation. |
| “Stream specifier” or map error for audio | A playlist item has no matching audio stream, or the files do not expose compatible audio. | Check every playlist item’s audio streams. Map the intended source explicitly, or omit/replace the audio map if your output plan differs. |
| Background does not appear, or the wrong video is layered | Input order or filter labels do not match the actual command. | Remember that the first -i is input 0 and the second is input 1 here; adjust [0:v] and [1:v] if you reorder inputs. |
| Broadcast does not connect | Ingestion endpoint, stream name/key, protocol, or channel setup may be wrong. | Copy the current RTMPS details for this stream from YouTube, verify the URL is complete, and protect the key. Review YouTube’s RTMPS guide. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health or playback buffers | Bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, settings may not match the target, or the source may have problematic timing. | Compare settings with YouTube’s current resolution/frame-rate table, check sustained upload capacity, and repeat a test while monitoring stream health. |
| Playlist ends while the background could continue | The foreground playlist is finite; looping the background does not extend the foreground or automatically repeat the playlist. | Decide whether the intended broadcast should end with the playlist or loop the playlist separately, then test its duration and timestamp behavior. |
