You can keep a property-tour video on a Synology NAS and stream it to YouTube Live by having an encoder repeatedly play the NAS-hosted file and send the feed to YouTube. The key limitation: Synology’s documented Surveillance Station Live Broadcast feature sends a camera stream; it does not establish a way to loop a prerecorded video. The encoder and its setup depend on your NAS model, DSM version, and chosen software, so verify those before relying on a specific configuration.

What you need to set up

  • A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming.
  • A property-tour video stored on the Synology NAS, with a format, resolution, frame rate, and audio track the chosen encoder can read.
  • An encoder that explicitly supports repeatedly playing a local or network-hosted prerecorded file and sending it to YouTube Live.
  • A stable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for the selected stream settings.
  • A plan to monitor the encoder and stream, and to recover them if either stops.

The encoder can run on a separate computer that reads the video from a NAS share, or it may run in a compatible container on the NAS. These are possible architectures, not a verified recipe for a particular Synology model or application. Confirm the exact model, DSM version, software compatibility, and restart behavior before choosing the NAS itself as the encoder host.

Check YouTube live-stream eligibility first

  1. Verify the YouTube channel if it is not already verified.
  2. Check that the channel has not had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
  3. If live streaming has not been enabled on the channel before, allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance calls for testing before going live. If you plan to make the test public, consider whether a private or unlisted test better suits your channel and listing.

Choose where the encoder will run

Separate computer reading from a NAS share

A computer can run the encoder while the tour video remains stored on the NAS. The computer must be able to access the share for the entire stream, and its operating system, encoder, network connection, and power settings must support continuous operation. If the computer sleeps, loses the share, or reboots, playback may stop.

Container on a compatible Synology NAS

Container Manager is available only on listed Synology models. Check Synology’s compatibility information for your exact NAS and DSM version before planning around a container. Then confirm that the encoder software in the container can read the stored video, loop it, send a YouTube Live stream, and restart appropriately after a failure. The availability of Container Manager alone does not establish that a particular encoder or loop configuration will work.

Do not confuse a camera broadcast with file playback

Synology Surveillance Station Live Broadcast selects a camera source and sends that camera stream to YouTube. That documented feature is not evidence that Surveillance Station can play a prerecorded property-tour file in a continuous loop. For a file-based tour, use an encoder that specifically supports prerecorded-file playout.

Configure the YouTube stream and encoder

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or manage the live stream and retrieve its stream URL and stream key.
  2. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: enter it only in the encoder, do not publish it or include it in screenshots, and reset it if you believe it has been exposed.
  3. Choose RTMPS where your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Check that the selected encoder supports the protocol and the codecs in your intended workflow.
  4. Set the file as a repeating source. In the encoder’s own settings, select the NAS-hosted video and enable repeat or loop playback. The exact control name and method vary by software. Confirm that playback restarts cleanly at the end of the file and that audio behaves as intended.
  5. Enter the stream URL and key. Use the values shown in Live Control Room, following the encoder’s YouTube or RTMPS connection instructions.
  6. Match output settings to the source and YouTube guidance. Select a supported resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. Do not assume that an encoder’s default settings match the video or the upload connection.
  7. Preview and test. Before using the stream for a listing, confirm the picture, sound, loop transition, YouTube preview, and stream health. Test the recovery behavior you expect to rely on.

Choose bitrate, resolution, and upload headroom

Use YouTube’s encoder guidance for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate you choose; bitrate is not a universal setting. As one specific reference, YouTube lists 10 Mbps as its recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30. That recommendation applies to that codec and mode, not every 1080p stream or every encoder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube’s streaming tips recommend keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream bitrate. For example, if you configure a stream at 10 Mbps, aim for at least 12 Mbps of sustained available upload capacity for the stream, in addition to any other activity using the connection. Check sustained upload performance rather than relying only on a provider’s advertised maximum.

  • Use a resolution and frame rate supported by both the source file and encoder.
  • Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s guidance for the selected codec and mode, then check that the connection can sustain it with headroom.
  • Confirm the encoder’s keyframe and protocol settings against its YouTube instructions; the exact controls depend on the software.
  • Watch for dropped frames or stream-health warnings during a test, especially across the end-to-start loop transition.

Plan for looping, monitoring, and archives

A live encoder can fail even when the tour file is intact: the host may restart, a share may disconnect, internet access may drop, or the encoder may stop. Decide who will monitor the stream and how playback will be restarted. If the encoder or NAS is unattended, test its restart behavior rather than assuming it will resume correctly.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a longer-running loop will be saved as one complete archive; verify how the particular stream is handled and plan separate recordings or archive management if continuity matters.

Property-tour content and YouTube rules

Use footage and audio you have the right to stream. A property tour can include music, artwork, people, or other material you do not own; permission to film a location does not automatically establish permission to use every item captured in the video. Review YouTube’s copyright requirements and your rights to the recording before broadcasting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A loop is still a live stream of prerecorded material. Make the listing and stream description clear about what viewers are seeing, and do not imply that a prerecorded tour is a live camera view. YouTube’s monetization decisions can also consider whether a channel’s material is original and meaningfully distinct; looping a file does not itself establish eligibility for monetization.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not accept the encoder feed The stream URL or key is incorrect, the key was changed, or the encoder is using an unsupported connection setting. Compare the encoder values with the current values in Live Control Room, confirm RTMPS support if selected, and regenerate the key if it may have been exposed.
The stream starts but video or audio is missing The encoder cannot decode the file or is not sending the expected audio or video track. Test the file in the encoder before going live, check its supported codecs and tracks, and verify both picture and sound in YouTube’s preview.
The stream buffers or drops frames Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable, or the chosen bitrate is too high for available headroom. Check sustained upload capacity, leave the recommended headroom, and adjust bitrate or output settings to match YouTube’s guidance for the selected mode.
The video stops at the end instead of repeating The selected software or playback mode is not configured for file looping. Confirm that the encoder explicitly supports looping a prerecorded file and that repeat is enabled. Test the full end-to-start transition before relying on it.
The NAS-hosted file becomes unavailable The encoder lost access to the network share, or the NAS or network restarted. Check share access and network stability, then test whether the encoder resumes after a temporary disconnect. A different host or software may be needed if recovery is unreliable.
The stream does not restart after a host or connection failure The encoder, container, or host lacks the required automatic restart or recovery behavior. Check the application’s restart settings and run a controlled recovery test. Do not assume that restarting the NAS or encoder will automatically restore the YouTube stream.
The stream is live but the expected archive is missing or incomplete The stream exceeded YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic-archive scope, or archive handling differs from expectations. Check the stream’s status and archive in YouTube Studio. Treat longer-loop archive continuity as something to verify, not a guarantee.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a computer or NAS at home to run the encoder continuously, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos. Upload the property-tour recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
