How to Run a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Playlist with FFmpeg’s Concat Demuxer

You can run a 4K 60fps YouTube Live playlist with FFmpeg’s concat demuxer only when the clips already have compatible streams. The demuxer sequences packets; it does not resize, convert frame rates, or make mixed formats match. Inspect the files first, normalize any incompatible clips, then send the playlist to YouTube with settings that meet its current ingest guidance and verify the result in Live Control Room.

What the concat demuxer can—and cannot—do

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer presents multiple files as one virtual input and adjusts timestamps as it moves through them. It is suitable for a playlist of compatible media, not for converting an assortment of clips into a consistent 4K60 stream. FFmpeg’s documentation says the files must have the same streams, including the same codecs and time bases. Incorrect duration metadata can also cause artifacts or gaps. Read the ffprobe documentation alongside the FFmpeg manual.

  • Use stream copy when the clips’ video and audio streams already match and meet your intended output requirements. It avoids decoding and re-encoding.
  • Normalize or filter when clips differ in resolution, frame rate, codec, stream layout, or other required properties. Stream copy cannot resize, filter, or make their packet streams conform to a new frame rate. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is required: FFmpeg FAQ.

A command-line output frame-rate option does not transform copied packets into a genuinely 60 fps stream. The actual video stream must already have the desired properties, or an encoder must produce them.

Inspect every playlist file before joining it

The commands below assume a recent FFmpeg/ffprobe build, local files you are authorized to stream, and a YouTube live event configured to accept the selected codec and protocol. Filenames and paths are examples: substitute your own. Check each file, not just the first one.

  1. Inspect streams and format metadata:

    ffprobe -v error -show_entries format=duration:stream=index,codec_type,codec_name,width,height,r_frame_rate,avg_frame_rate,time_base,sample_rate,channels,channel_layout -of json "clip1.mp4"

  2. Repeat for all clips. Compare video codec, dimensions, frame-rate fields, time bases, audio presence and layout, and duration. A file labelled “4K” is not necessarily 60 fps; inspect the reported stream properties.

  3. Resolve mismatches before building a stream-copy playlist. For a genuinely mixed playlist, make normalized copies or use a filter-based concat workflow. Choose the target resolution, frame rate, codecs, and audio format deliberately; the exact preprocessing command depends on the source media and your quality and hardware requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal safe normalization command without knowing the source codecs, aspect ratios, frame rates, audio streams, and FFmpeg build. Preserve aspect ratio when resizing, decide how to handle letterboxing or cropping, and check the output of every normalized file with ffprobe before concatenating.

Build an FFconcat playlist for compatible files

Create a plain-text playlist file, for example playlist.txt, with the FFconcat header and one file entry per clip. Keep the order you want to play:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'clip1.mp4'
file 'clip2.mp4'
file 'clip3.mp4'

Use paths that are valid relative to the playlist file, or provide full paths. FFmpeg’s safe-path behavior can reject entries it considers unsafe. If you need to permit trusted absolute or otherwise non-safe paths, use -safe 0 with the concat input option, and only with a playlist you control; do not use it with untrusted playlist contents.

Send the compatible playlist to YouTube

For compatible streams that already satisfy the output requirements, the following is a stream-copy example. It uses RTMPS as the output transport, paces the file input in real time, and reads the stream key from an environment variable rather than placing it in the command text.

ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c copy -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/app/${YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY}"

  • Replace YOUR_INGEST_URL with the server URL shown for your YouTube event and set YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY to that event’s stream key. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
  • Use -safe 0 only if the paths in this locally created playlist require it. If safe relative paths work, omit the option.
  • -re reads the file at approximately real-time speed. It does not change resolution, frame rate, or codec.
  • -c copy copies the existing encoded streams. It is not a conversion step, and the resulting feed is only suitable if those streams are accepted by YouTube and already meet the requirements.

FFmpeg option placement and support can vary by version/build. Check the manual for the FFmpeg build you installed, and test the exact command with a short event before relying on it for a long broadcast.

Looping the playlist

To repeat a file input indefinitely, FFmpeg provides -stream_loop -1. Its placement and behavior are input-option semantics, so put it before the input it applies to and verify it against your installed FFmpeg version. For example, test this form with a short run:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c copy -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/app/${YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY}"

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Confirm that playback returns cleanly to the first clip and that audio and timestamps remain continuous. Do not assume the loop is seamless simply because the command continues running.

When clips are not compatible: normalize, then stream

If the playlist mixes codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio layouts, or stream counts, first produce files with a consistent stream layout and target properties. You can then use the concat demuxer on those normalized outputs if they meet its compatibility requirements. Alternatively, use FFmpeg’s concat filter to join inputs in a filter graph and encode the result. Filtering and re-encoding use more compute and can reduce quality, but they enable resizing, frame-rate conversion, and other normalization that stream copy cannot do.

For the live output encode, choose a codec accepted by the YouTube ingest path you selected, set the encoder’s actual frame rate and dimensions, include compatible audio, use constant bitrate, and set keyframes at the required interval. Avoid assuming that a copied 4K file or an output flag alone ensures a compliant live feed.

Set bitrate, keyframes, and upload headroom

YouTube’s live encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Its English (UK) guidance lists 10–40 Mbps for 2160p/4K at 60 fps using AV1 or HEVC, and recommends 35 Mbps for H.264. The displayed codec columns and recommendations may vary with page revision or localization, so confirm the current table for your ingest path before going live: YouTube live encoder settings.

  • Bitrate: use constant bitrate (CBR) and choose a value within YouTube’s current recommendation for your codec and resolution. The figures above are platform guidance, not a guarantee of image quality or a universal setting for every encoder.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Configure the encoder accordingly; with a 60 fps encode, a two-second interval corresponds to 120 frames.
  • Upload capacity: YouTube recommends 20% headroom beyond the combined bitrate of primary and backup streams. Measure sustained upload performance under realistic conditions rather than relying only on a headline speed-test result.
  • Audio and motion: test representative audio and fast-moving scenes, since both can reveal issues that a static test image will not.

YouTube’s streaming tips cover upload headroom and monitoring: YouTube streaming tips. Its encoder guidance also says, “Make sure that you test before you start your live stream.”

  2. Start FFmpeg and wait for YouTube to detect the incoming feed. Check the preview, resolution, frame rate, audio, and stream-health indicators before starting or announcing the broadcast.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. Run a representative test that includes typical motion and audio. Confirm the bitrate is stable, the video is actually 2160p at 60 fps where expected, and the playlist transition has no unexpected gap, freeze, or audio break.

  4. Monitor stream health during the event. If the ingest reports a warning or the preview is wrong, stop and resolve the source or encoder problem rather than assuming the player will correct it.

YouTube classifies 4K streaming as normal latency in its encoder guidance. Account configuration and event availability can affect the live workflow, so verify the current requirements in Live Control Room.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
Concat reports mismatched streams or playback breaks between clips Inputs differ in codec, stream layout, time base, resolution, frame rate, or other relevant properties; duration metadata may also be inaccurate. Compare ffprobe output for every file. Normalize incompatible inputs or switch to a filter-based concat and re-encode. Check duration metadata and test transitions.
The stream is not 4K or not 60 fps The source packets do not have the target properties, or stream copy is being mistaken for conversion. Inspect the input and YouTube preview. Encode at the intended dimensions and frame rate if conversion is required; do not expect -c copy or an output frame-rate flag to transform the video.
FFmpeg rejects playlist paths The paths are outside the concat demuxer’s safe-path rules, or are relative to a different location than expected. Use valid relative paths where possible. For trusted local playlist contents that require other paths, try -safe 0 before the concat input.
YouTube does not receive the feed Incorrect event server URL or key, unsupported ingest settings, network restrictions, or FFmpeg exited with an error. Check the event’s current server URL and key, inspect FFmpeg’s output, confirm the selected protocol and codec, and verify that outbound connectivity is available.
Buffering, dropped frames, or unstable stream health Insufficient sustained upload capacity, an encoder that cannot keep up, or other network or system load. Check encoder performance and sustained upload capacity; leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom over primary and backup bitrates and retest with representative content.
Gaps, freezes, or audio discontinuities at clip boundaries Incompatible stream parameters, inaccurate duration/timestamps, or abrupt content edits. Inspect each file’s metadata, test transitions, correct preparation issues, and normalize or filter-concatenate clips that cannot be safely stream-copied together.
