You can use Windows Task Scheduler to launch an encoder that sends a prerecorded video to a scheduled YouTube Live broadcast. The key distinction: a scheduled task starts a program; it does not, by itself, guarantee YouTube will make the broadcast public, keep the stream running, or recover it after a failure. Configure and test the encoder, the YouTube broadcast controls, and the Windows account together before relying on the schedule.
What you need before scheduling the stream
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. If live streaming has not been enabled before, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned event. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- A scheduled or created broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- An encoder that can read your video repeatedly and send it to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS. YouTube accepts software and hardware encoders; a costly hardware encoder is not required to get started.
- A Windows account and task configuration that can access the media file, encoder, configuration, and network when the task runs.
- A reliable upload connection with enough capacity for the chosen output bitrate.
1. Create the YouTube broadcast
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder broadcast. Set the title, visibility, and any other event details. Scheduling can create an upcoming watch page so viewers can find the event and set reminders. YouTube’s documented manual workflow is to start the encoder, wait until the preview appears, then click Go live in Live Control Room.

For unattended starts, review the broadcast’s stream settings for auto-start and auto-stop. If enabled, these controls can let encoder activity start or stop the broadcast. They change the manual workflow, but you should verify the behavior on your channel with a test broadcast rather than assume Task Scheduler itself publishes the event. Details are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.

2. Protect and configure the stream key
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Copy the current stream URL and key from Live Control Room into the encoder’s output settings. YouTube’s setup instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” Treat the key as a secret: do not post it, include it in a public script or screenshot, or share it with anyone who does not need access.

If you think the key has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration. A reset makes the old key unusable, so the scheduled process must use the replacement. The exact way an encoder stores credentials differs by product; check its documentation and restrict access to the task files and account.
3. Configure a repeating video input
The encoder needs to repeat the prerecorded input and send its output to the YouTube ingest URL. FFmpeg documents real-time file input and RTMP output; its protocol example is ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. That is a generic RTMP example, not a YouTube-ready command, and it does not make the input loop indefinitely. Replace the example output with the current YouTube ingest details in the encoder’s configuration, and use a loop/repeat option documented for the particular encoder and FFmpeg build you install.
There is no single loop command established here for every FFmpeg version, file type, and YouTube key setup. If using FFmpeg, validate the complete command—including loop behavior, audio, codec, and output flags—on the exact Windows machine and build that will run the task. Alternatively, choose a compatible encoder whose input settings explicitly document repeat or loop playback, then confirm it restarts the file as intended.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMatch output to YouTube’s recommendations
YouTube Help recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval for RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings; it says not to exceed four seconds. For 1080p at 30 fps, its recommended bitrate is 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 14 Mbps for H.264. These are recommendations, not guarantees: select an output your sustained upload connection can support and check YouTube’s stream-health feedback. The original publication year for these figures was not exposed on the cited page. See YouTube’s bitrate and encoder settings.

Check the looped program, not just the connection
- Watch the transition from the end of the video back to the beginning. A visible pause, black frame, or audio gap may be inherent in the file or encoder’s loop behavior.
- Confirm whether the video has audio and that the encoder sends the intended audio track. A silent source should not accidentally produce unwanted noise or a misleading audio meter.
- Check that the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate are consistent with the source and the encoder’s output settings.
- Use only media you have rights to stream. Repeating a video does not grant permission to use its music, footage, or other material; review the rights and applicable YouTube rules for your content.
4. Make a Windows scheduled task launch the encoder
Microsoft’s schtasks utility creates, queries, starts, and stops scheduled tasks. A task runs using its saved program location and user account; that alone does not ensure every file, network resource, or interactive desktop session will be available. The command-line tool is available on Windows 10 and 11, among other listed Windows editions. Microsoft’s page was last updated 2023-02-03. See Microsoft Learn: schtasks commands.
- Choose the trigger. In Task Scheduler, create a task with a trigger for the intended date and time. If you use
schtasks, specify a schedule appropriate to the event and consult Microsoft’s syntax for the installed Windows version. - Set the action to the encoder. Use the full path to the encoder executable. If it needs arguments or a configuration file, provide the complete paths and quote paths containing spaces correctly. Avoid relying on a working directory or environment variable that exists only in your interactive session.
- Select the account deliberately. Ensure the saved task account can read the video and encoder configuration and reach the network at trigger time. Test the task under that account—not only by launching the encoder manually while signed in as a different user.
- Decide whether an interactive session is required. Some encoder setups may depend on a desktop session or user-specific settings. Test the chosen task configuration in the same sign-in state expected during the scheduled run; the available Microsoft guidance does not establish a universal checkbox combination for streaming.
- Save logs and a stop procedure. Keep a record of encoder output and how to stop the running process. Before scheduling another start, confirm that the previous encoder process has exited; otherwise, two instances may compete for the same broadcast.
- Test the saved task on demand. Query and start the task with Task Scheduler or
schtasks, then verify the encoder opens the intended media, connects to YouTube, and reaches preview. A successful task launch alone does not prove the public broadcast is live.
5. Keep background execution and go-live behavior explicit
FFmpeg’s official FAQ recommends -nostdin for running FFmpeg as a background task so it does not wait for interactive input. It also documents redirecting standard input to NUL on Windows. Use the method appropriate to your invocation and keep logs available so a failed run can be diagnosed. See FFmpeg’s background-task FAQ.
Choose one of two broadcast control flows and test it:
| Control flow | What happens | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Manual Go live | The scheduled task starts the encoder; an operator checks the preview and clicks Go live. | A person can catch a bad feed before it becomes public, but must be present. |
| YouTube auto-start/auto-stop enabled | The configured YouTube stream controls may allow encoder activity to start and stop the broadcast. | It reduces manual steps but depends on the broadcast’s actual settings and needs a real test. |
A Windows trigger is not a recovery system. Do not assume that Task Scheduler will restart a failed encoder or that YouTube will restore a dropped stream. Confirm what happens after a deliberate test interruption and arrange a separate, tested recovery approach if your use case requires one.

6. Run a test and monitor the broadcast
YouTube recommends testing the setup, checking the preview and stream health, and preparing the encoder before an event. Run the saved task under the real account and schedule conditions. Confirm that the image and audio are right, the loop behaves acceptably, the event has the intended visibility, and the selected manual or automatic go-live flow works. Check upload bandwidth against the output and watch stream health during the test.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same archive outcome for a stream that runs 12 hours or longer. If the recording matters, plan a separate way to preserve the source or verify the available archive after the broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder guide.
Troubleshooting common failures
The task runs, but no stream reaches YouTube
- Check that the task action points to the correct executable and configuration, and that paths are valid for the task account.
- Confirm the encoder has the current stream URL and key, and that the task account can read them.
- Check whether the network is available at the scheduled time and review the encoder log for connection or authentication errors.
YouTube shows preview, but the broadcast is not public
For the manual flow, the operator still needs to click Go live after the preview appears. If you expect automatic publication, verify auto-start settings for that particular stream and test them; the task starting successfully is not proof that YouTube transitioned the broadcast.

The stream drops or the task creates duplicate encoders
Inspect logs to see whether the encoder exited, lost network access, or is still running. A scheduled start does not by itself provide automatic recovery. Ensure a new trigger cannot launch a second copy while an earlier process remains active, and test the chosen restart procedure.
The video is unstable or stream health is poor
Check upload capacity and compare it with the configured bitrate. Confirm the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR mode, and two-second keyframe interval against YouTube’s recommendations. Lower the output bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the selected settings.
The stream key no longer works
Check whether the key was reset or the wrong broadcast’s details were copied. Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room into the encoder, then restrict access to the updated configuration.
Cost and operating trade-offs
The DIY method uses your Windows PC and internet connection while the encoder runs. Its direct costs depend on the computer and connection you already have, plus any electricity or maintenance; this workflow does not establish a universal cost figure. In exchange, you retain direct control over the Windows process and encoder configuration. The PC, network, and task account remain dependencies, and unattended operation needs testing and monitoring.
