If OBS loses its internet connection but stays open, its automatic reconnect option may restore the feed. If OBS itself crashes or closes, it cannot reconnect: use an independent backup encoder and test YouTube’s failover, or automate an OBS relaunch while recognizing that restarting the app alone does not guarantee the event will recover. First identify what stopped working
“OBS closes unexpectedly” can mean two different failures, and the remedy depends on which one occurred. OBS automatic reconnect is for a lost connection while OBS and its streaming output remain running. It cannot act after the OBS process exits.

In OBS, open Settings > Advanced and find the automatic reconnect controls. Enable reconnect, then select a retry count and delay suited to the length of network interruption you expect. OBS documents automatic reconnect as an Advanced feature; the output API describes a retry count and starting retry interval for outputs that support reconnect. Those options address a connection retry while OBS remains active, not recovery from an application crash. OBS Studio documentation.

Do not assume that a chosen retry count means OBS will keep trying forever, or that YouTube will retain the same broadcast state after every interruption. Rehearse a representative network drop and observe both OBS and the YouTube player.
Use a separate encoder for continuity after an OBS crash
For a stream that must keep producing video when OBS fails, configure an independent backup encoder for the intended YouTube event. Independence matters: a backup that depends on the same OBS process cannot protect against that process closing. Where practical, avoid sharing the component most likely to fail. YouTube’s documented test is direct: “For test encoder failover, stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable. Make sure the player rolls over to the backup encoder.” YouTube Help: YouTube live streaming tips.

- Set up the event and encoders. Confirm that the primary and backup encoders are configured to target the intended YouTube event. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers starting a stream and connecting an encoder to Live Control Room. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Check Live Control Room behavior. Review the event’s auto-start and auto-stop choices. These control starting or stopping streaming from the encoder; test the exact settings with the scheduled or live workflow you intend to use. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Rehearse safely. Use an unlisted or otherwise appropriate test event. Start the primary, check preview and viewer playback, then stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable and verify that the player rolls over to the backup. Check stream health, picture and sound, and any local recording that is part of your recovery plan. YouTube recommends testing before going live, monitoring stream health, and verifying local archive files during production. YouTube Help: YouTube live streaming tips.
- Document the recovery path. Record which encoder is primary, how the backup targets the event, how you will confirm viewer playback, and who will intervene if failover does not occur. YouTube’s guidance establishes a test procedure, not a universal automatic failover outcome for every configuration.
A hardware encoder can be one option for an independent backup output, but hardware alone does not take over: the event configuration and player failover need to be rehearsed. YouTube recognizes hardware encoders and provides the backup-encoder test above; the cited guidance does not establish a particular device’s price, reliability percentage, or hands-free compatibility.

A watchdog or operating-system task may detect that OBS has exited and launch a configured instance. OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter. That is a building block, not an end-to-end recovery guarantee: your automation still needs to detect the failure, start the correct OBS configuration, reconnect to the intended broadcast, and verify that YouTube is receiving it.

Test the entire sequence on a non-public test event before depending on it. A restarted application may not restore the intended feed or broadcast state just because it opened and began streaming. OBS’s documented launch options are described in its documentation. OBS Studio documentation.
Check the YouTube event before changing keys
If OBS has restarted but YouTube does not show the expected feed, check Live Control Room and confirm the selected event or stream before changing credentials. A stream key is the encoder’s credential for sending a feed. YouTube documents resetting a key when it is compromised; changing it is not a routine crash-recovery step. End the event deliberately
When the broadcast is over, stop the encoder content as part of ending the stream rather than treating an interruption as a planned end. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archiving guidance is not a promise that an interrupted event will resume or that a crash-created gap will be repaired. Troubleshoot the common recovery failures
