To loop a local video on YouTube Live from a Mac, add it to an OBS scene as a Media Source, enable Loop, then connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream with its server URL and stream key. Start the OBS feed, check the preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room, and go live when YouTube prompts you.
Before you start
- Install OBS on your Mac and have the video or audio file you want to stream available locally.
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live activation can take time, so enable it before the day you plan to broadcast. YouTube live-streaming tips
- Use a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your stream bitrate. YouTube recommends keeping 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the total stream bitrate; if you operate primary and backup streams, include both bitrates before adding that headroom. Set up a video loop in OBS
- Open OBS and create or select the scene you want to use.
- In the Sources panel, select + → Media Source. Name the source if prompted, then select OK.
- In the Media Source properties, enable Local File if it is not already selected, browse to your file, and select it. OBS documents support for common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM video, and MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV audio. OBS Media Sources
- Check Loop, then select OK. OBS describes this option as restarting the file once playback has completed.
- Confirm the source appears in the OBS preview and that its audio meters move when the file plays. If it does not fit the canvas, right-click the source in the preview and use Transform → Fit to Screen. Check the preview for cropping or unwanted empty space.
When you need a playlist
For one repeating file, Media Source is the direct option. If you need a playlist, OBS’s VLC Video source can play and loop one, but VLC must be installed. Choose + in Sources → VLC Video, add the playlist files, and enable looping in the source properties. OBS Media Sources
When to use Mac screen capture instead
Use OBS Screen Capture when the video is playing in another application or you need to capture a display or window. For a local file you want to repeat, Media Source avoids capturing the desktop. OBS’s macOS documentation lists screen-capture audio for macOS 13 and later; macOS 12.3–12.6 is listed without audio. Create or select a YouTube encoder stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open the Stream tab.
- Create a stream or select an existing stream setup. YouTube displays a server URL and stream key for the encoder connection. Exact labels or screen layouts may change.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: it directs your encoder feed to your YouTube stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in OBS. YouTube encoder setup · YouTube stream-key guidance
Connect OBS and go live
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Choose YouTube as the service if available, or use the custom server option to enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key.
- For an encrypted encoder connection, use RTMPS when the server address YouTube provides supports it. Do not share or publish the stream key.
- Select Apply and OK, then select Start Streaming in OBS.
- Return to YouTube Live Control Room. Wait for the incoming feed, review the preview and stream-health indicators, and select the YouTube control to go live when it is available.
- Once live, check both picture and audio on the channel’s watch page, including on a mobile device if viewers are likely to use one.
Choose settings and test the actual stream
There is no single resolution, frame rate or bitrate that suits every Mac, file and connection. Match the OBS output to the source and to what your Mac can encode reliably; then test the stream with representative movement and sound. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder ahead of the broadcast and checking stream health rather than assuming that a successful connection guarantees a good viewer experience. - Keep total stream bitrate within the connection’s capacity, with YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom remaining. Count a backup feed too, if you are running one.
- Watch OBS’s audio meters and listen to the YouTube preview. A moving meter alone does not confirm that the audience can hear clean audio.
- Run an unlisted or otherwise controlled test before a public broadcast. Verify the loop restarts as expected, the preview stays in sync, and the stream remains healthy for a meaningful period.
- Use RTMPS where available for the encoder connection, as YouTube recommends an encrypted connection.
Plan for a long-running loop
A Loop checkbox repeats the file, but it does not keep a Mac, OBS, power supply or internet connection running. For a long broadcast, test the complete setup for a meaningful period and plan to monitor stream health; the documented workflow does not guarantee uninterrupted operation for a particular Mac, OBS version, file or network.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived when ended. This is an archiving threshold, not a promise that any stream will remain uninterrupted for that length of time. YouTube encoder setup

Copyright and monetization considerations
Only stream material you have the rights to use on YouTube. A technically successful loop does not resolve copyright questions or establish monetization eligibility. YouTube’s monetization policy says content should be original and authentic; mass-produced, generic or repetitive content without distinct creative, educational or other viewer value may face monetization limits.
