Start with the official strike email and the affected channel’s YouTube Studio records. Match the video named in the notice to the livestream and, if one exists, its archived recording. A livestream interruption alone does not prove that a strike was issued against the archive—or identify which item a later strike concerns.
Check the strike email and YouTube Studio
- Find the official email. Look for a strike notice from [email protected]. YouTube says it emails creators with an explanation of why a strike was applied; the message is especially important if you cannot access the channel. Read the notice for the affected content and reason. YouTube: Understand copyright strikes.
- Review the channel’s strike record. Sign in to the affected account and open YouTube Studio. On the Dashboard, check Active copyright strikes.
- Inspect the affected item. In Studio, open Content, apply the Copyright filter, and locate the item named in the notice. Open its copyright restriction details. YouTube’s counter-notification instructions also describe hovering over Copyright and selecting See details to review information about the content used. Labels and interface details can change; follow the current controls shown in your account. YouTube: Submit a copyright counter notification.
- Match the records. Compare the item and details in Studio with the livestream and its archived video record, if available. Keep the email and relevant Studio details together. YouTube recommends keeping records of notices and communications. YouTube: Tips for copyright removals.
YouTube’s public guidance explains where to look, but does not promise a universal Studio label that explicitly identifies a strike as coming from “the livestream” or “the archive.” Use the account-specific notice and affected-content record; if they do not identify the item clearly, do not infer it from timing alone.

Tell a strike apart from a live interruption or Content ID claim
| Event | What it means | What it tells you about the affected item |
|---|---|---|
| Live interruption or termination | YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. Depending on the situation, it may warn the streamer, replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. | By itself, an interruption does not establish that a copyright strike was applied or whether a later strike concerns the live event or the archived video. YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams. |
| Content ID claim on an archived livestream | YouTube says these claims are made after the livestream ends if the creator chooses to archive it. | A claim is not automatically a strike. Check the notice and Studio record to determine which process applies. YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams; YouTube: Understand copyright strikes. |
| Copyright strike | A strike follows a copyright removal request that YouTube reviews and treats as valid. It is distinct from a Content ID claim. | Use the strike email and the affected item’s Studio details to identify the content. YouTube: About copyright removal requests; YouTube: Understand copyright strikes. |
What to do if Studio confirms a strike
First establish that the notice names the correct content. Deleting the video does not generally clear a strike that has already been applied. YouTube documents three main resolution paths:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

- Complete Copyright School and wait for expiry. YouTube says strikes expire after 90 days if you complete Copyright School, subject to the channel having fewer than three copyright strikes. Expiry does not reinstate the removed video. YouTube: Understand copyright strikes.
- Ask the claimant to retract the removal request. A retraction can resolve the strike if the claimant withdraws the request. Keep a record of communications. YouTube: Tips for copyright removals.
- Consider a counter notification only if you believe the removal was mistaken or misidentified. This is a legal request to reinstate removed content, not a routine appeal. YouTube shares the counter notification, including personal contact information, with the claimant. If YouTube forwards a valid counter notification, the claimant has 10 US business days to provide evidence of legal action to keep the content from being reinstated. Review YouTube’s requirements carefully and consider qualified legal advice if the decision is consequential. YouTube: Submit a copyright counter notification.
For a scheduled copyright removal request, YouTube says the uploader is given 7 days to take specified actions, such as deleting the content or seeking a retraction, to avoid a strike. A counter notification cannot be filed until the removal takes effect and the strike is applied. YouTube: About copyright removal requests.

If you cannot tell which item the strike concerns
- Compare the title, URL or other identifying information in the email with the affected item and details shown in Studio.
- Check whether the live event has a separate archived video record; do not assume that a record of an interrupted broadcast and an archive are the same item.
- Save the email and relevant Studio information together before taking action.
- If the notice and Studio details still do not make the affected item clear, do not file a counter notification based on timing alone. Use YouTube’s documented copyright procedures and seek legal advice if you are considering a legal response.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you stream prerecorded videos to YouTube, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping from the cloud. Upload your video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed. This does not change YouTube’s copyright rules: make sure you have the rights to the material you stream.
