A YouTube playlist only organizes videos already hosted on YouTube; it does not play local SSD files as a live stream.
What “YouTube gaming VOD playlist” means
There are two different workflows that can sound like a playlist:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- YouTube playlist: A collection of videos or Shorts hosted on YouTube. You can set its visibility and change its order, but it does not broadcast local files from a drive. See YouTube’s playlist instructions.
- Local VOD sequence: Files on your external SSD played by a computer and encoder, which sends the resulting feed to a YouTube Live event. This is the method below.
What you need
- An external SSD containing the gaming VOD files, plus a computer that can read and play them.
- An encoder. YouTube identifies software encoders such as OBS as an option for sending gameplay, overlays, and other input to a live stream. See the YouTube encoder setup guide and the OBS Help Portal.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no livestreaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Initial live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned broadcast.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream bitrate.
No particular SSD brand, capacity, speed rating, or connector is established as a requirement for this workflow. Check that your computer can connect to the drive, that it has room for the files you want to play, and that those files open reliably.

- Connect the SSD and check the files. Confirm the drive appears on your computer and open each VOD you intend to use. Keep the SSD connected during playback. Note your intended file order and check that the audio is present.
- Enable live streaming and create an event. In YouTube Studio, go to Create → Go Live, then create or select the live event. If this is the channel’s first livestream, allow up to 24 hours for enablement.
- Configure your encoder for local playback. Set up the encoder to play the SSD files in sequence and use YouTube as the destination. The encoder must be able to read each file and continue to the next one in your intended order. Exact controls for building a multi-file sequence vary by application and version; check the current encoder’s documentation rather than relying on assumed button names.
- Copy the event’s connection details into the encoder. In YouTube Live Control Room, get the event’s stream URL and stream key, then enter them in the encoder’s stream settings. Make sure they belong to the event you intend to broadcast. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish or share it.
- Preview before going public. Start the encoder output and check the Live Control Room preview. Confirm picture and sound, the sequence and transitions between files, and that playback continues while the SSD remains connected. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring audio and video quality in its live-streaming tips.
- Check your upload capacity, then start the event. Compare available upstream bandwidth with the encoder’s configured bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom; a download-speed result alone does not establish that your upload is sufficient. When the preview and stream health look right, start the event and keep an eye on the broadcast.
- Check the archive in Studio afterward. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Verify the current stream and archive behavior in Studio before relying on an archive as your only copy.
Encoder settings and practical checks
Choose settings the computer can play smoothly and the internet connection can upload reliably. YouTube publishes recommended encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions in its encoder settings guidance; use that current guidance for the resolution and frame rate you select rather than guessing a bitrate. The available source guidance does not establish one ideal setting for every gaming VOD, connection, or computer.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
- Match the source where practical: Avoid selecting output quality beyond what the computer can play and the connection can sustain.
- Protect upload headroom: YouTube’s 20% headroom recommendation is for available bandwidth beyond the stream’s bitrate. Test upload capacity, not just download speed.
- Check representative content: Preview scenes with fast movement and loud or quiet audio, as well as transitions between files. These reveal issues a static screen may not.
- Keep the playback path intact: Do not disconnect, eject, or let the computer sleep in a way that interrupts SSD playback or encoder output.
OBS profiles can save settings such as stream and output settings, while scenes are stored separately, according to the OBS Project’s Profiles documentation. This can help you preserve encoder configuration, but it does not by itself create or manage a local-file playlist.
Copyright and YouTube channel rules
Only stream VODs and accompanying audio or overlays that you have the rights or permission to broadcast. Previously uploaded gaming footage is not automatically cleared for every soundtrack, third-party clip, or other embedded material it contains. YouTube’s copyright enforcement and livestream restrictions can affect a broadcast or a channel’s ability to go live; review the applicable rules in YouTube Studio before scheduling a public event. Do not assume that labeling footage as a VOD or putting files in a playlist changes those rights.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The encoder cannot find a VOD | Is the SSD mounted, and does the file open individually? | Reconnect the drive, confirm the correct file path, and test playback before starting the event. |
| Playback stops between files | Does the encoder’s local-media setup advance through the sequence? | Review the current documentation for your encoder’s multi-file playback workflow, then test the full sequence in preview. |
| The Live Control Room has no picture or sound | Is the encoder preview correct, and are the event URL and key entered correctly? | Check local playback and encoder output first; then confirm the connection details match the selected YouTube event. |
| The stream buffers or reports poor health | Is available upload bandwidth adequate for the configured bitrate, with headroom? | Check upstream capacity, lower the encoder bitrate or output settings if needed, and preview again before going live. |
| The stream ends unexpectedly | Did the computer sleep, the encoder stop, or the SSD disconnect? | Keep the computer awake, maintain the drive connection, and monitor the encoder and Live Control Room during the broadcast. |
| You cannot start a livestream | Is the channel verified and free of a livestream restriction in the past 90 days? Has initial enablement completed? | Check channel eligibility and allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep a computer and attached SSD running at home, StreamNeo is a separate YouTube-only option for uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so the source files need to be uploaded rather than read live from your attached SSD.
- Nothing has to stay powered on at home for the stream to continue.
- Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start your free day.
