But a folder that automatically plays every file in sequence is a different requirement: the available Streamlabs guidance confirms media-file sources and looping, not an automatic folder playlist. Check the media-source controls in your installed version before relying on folder sequencing.
Before you start
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance says streamers must be at least 16. See YouTube live streaming tips.
- Install and sign in to Streamlabs Desktop, and have the video file available on the computer. Streamlabs’ media-file guidance describes regular media files such as MP4 as sources and discusses looping; that article was published June 5, 2019 and updated January 28, 2022, so confirm the current controls in your version.
- Use only video and audio you own or have permission to broadcast. The fact that a file is on your computer does not grant permission to stream it.
- Make sure your upload connection can sustain the chosen stream bitrate, with extra capacity for ordinary network variation.
Create or schedule the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a new stream or select an event you have already scheduled. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers both scheduled and unscheduled encoder streams.
- Choose the stream’s visibility and other event settings in YouTube Studio. Scheduling is useful when you want an event page and the scheduled preview-and-start flow; the exact controls may vary as YouTube updates its interface.
- Locate the stream URL and stream key in the stream or encoder settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in your scene, recording, screenshots, or public posts. YouTube explains the URL and key in Manage live stream settings.
Set up Streamlabs Desktop and add video
- In Streamlabs Desktop, connect YouTube under Settings > Stream, if the current setup offers a direct platform connection. Streamlabs’ Quick Start Guide, dated May 20, 2026, describes connecting platforms, making a scene, and adding sources.
- Create or select a scene, then use the Sources panel to add the local video as a media source. Choose the file and check the source’s available playback options. The media-file article supports the general use of files such as MP4 and looping, but exact labels and options can change by app version.
- If you need one clip to repeat, enable the media source’s loop option if it is available in your installed version. Test the end-to-start transition; a gap, abrupt cut, or audio discontinuity may be noticeable to viewers.
- If by “video folder” you mean playing several files one after another automatically, do not assume that selecting a folder or adding one media source creates a playlist. The cited Streamlabs material does not establish a current folder-import or automatic-advance workflow. Check the current media-source controls and documentation in your installed version, or use a workflow you have independently verified before scheduling a public event.
- Set up the scene so viewers see the intended video rather than a blank canvas or desktop. Check that audio is coming from the media source and that other scene sources are not covering it.
Connect the encoder and choose stream settings
If Streamlabs Desktop connects directly to YouTube, follow its current stream setup. If it asks for encoder details, use the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. YouTube’s encoder guide explains entering those values; keep the key private.

Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions as the reference for the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate you choose. YouTube recommends RTMPS when supported, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Its H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are recommendations, not a reason to pick the highest setting regardless of your connection: higher resolution and frame rate require more bitrate.
| H.264 output example | YouTube recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
Allow roughly 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate, as recommended in YouTube’s Streaming tips. For example, calculate headroom against the combined video and audio bitrate, not video alone. If your connection cannot sustain the target consistently, lower the output settings and test again rather than risking dropped frames or an unstable stream. YouTube’s settings recommendations and help pages can change, so check the current table when configuring a new event.

Test, go live, and end the event
- Run a private or unlisted test before the public event, using similar video movement and audio levels. Confirm the video is playing and the sound is present.
- For a scheduled stream, wait until YouTube Live Control Room shows the encoder preview, inspect it, then click Go live. For an unscheduled stream, follow the active flow shown in the Control Room. YouTube recommends checking the preview before starting.
- While live, monitor stream health and audio/video quality in Live Control Room. If you see instability, reduce output bitrate or resolution and address the connection or encoder warning before continuing.
- When finished, end the event in YouTube Studio and stop sending content from Streamlabs Desktop. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived in the Studio Live tab; do not rely on automatic archiving for a stream that runs longer.
Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not accept the stream: confirm the channel meets YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements, the selected event is the intended one, and the URL/key are current. Re-enter the key privately rather than displaying or sharing it.
- Live Control Room has no preview: verify Streamlabs is connected to the correct YouTube event and is sending output. Check the connection or encoder status before clicking Go live.
- The video is black or not moving: confirm the media source points to the correct local file, is visible in the scene, and has not reached the end with looping disabled. Recheck playback in the installed app’s current controls.
- There is no sound or audio is distorted: check that the media file has an audio track, the source is not muted, and Streamlabs’ audio meters show signal. Test playback and levels before the public event.
- Stream health is poor or viewers see interruptions: compare the total configured bitrate with actual upload capacity, leave the recommended headroom, and lower bitrate or output resolution if necessary. Test again before resuming a public event.
- A folder does not advance to its next clip: automatic folder sequencing is not established by the cited guidance. Verify whether your installed Streamlabs version has a current playlist or media-source feature for this use; do not treat looping one file as a multi-file playlist.
