To stream Tamil videos to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, put the files in a concat playlist, check that their streams are compatible, then send the playlist to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest URL with your stream key. Use streamcopy only when the files match; otherwise normalize or re-encode them to a common format. Test the preview and stream health before making the event public.
1. Prepare the Tamil video files
Put the videos in a known order and keep them in a folder accessible to the machine that will run FFmpeg. The concat demuxer reads paths from a text file; relative paths resolve from FFmpeg’s working directory. You can use suitable full paths instead. Paths containing spaces or special characters need appropriate quoting or escaping.

Before building a long broadcast, check representative files for their video and audio streams, codecs, dimensions, frame rates, time bases, and duration metadata. The concat demuxer is not a general-purpose playlist that seamlessly accepts any mix of media: FFmpeg’s documentation says all files must have the same streams, including codecs and time bases. Different stream lengths can create gaps, and inaccurate or truncated duration metadata can cause artifacts at transitions. Read FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation.
2. Write the playlist in playback order
Create a plain-text file named playlist.ffconcat alongside the videos. For files in that same directory, the contents could look like this:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'video-01.mp4'
file 'video-02.mp4'
file 'video-03.mp4'
Keep the ffconcat version 1.0 line at the start of the file. Change the filenames to match yours and put each file directive in the order you want viewers to see. If the playlist is elsewhere, use paths that resolve correctly from the directory where you run FFmpeg. For filenames with apostrophes or other special characters, use FFmpeg’s documented escaping rules rather than assuming ordinary shell quoting applies inside the playlist.
3. Choose streamcopy or re-encoding
Use streamcopy when the inputs are compatible
Streamcopy passes encoded audio and video through without decoding and encoding them again. It is fast and avoids another lossy encode, but it does not make incompatible inputs compatible and cannot apply filters. Use it only when the playlist’s streams are consistent and YouTube’s ingest can accept the codecs and layout. FFmpeg explains the distinction between copying and transcoding in its documentation.
Normalize or re-encode mismatched files
If files differ in codec, dimensions, frame rate, time base, or audio layout, do not assume that concat plus -c copy will work. Convert the files ahead of time to a common format and stream layout, then make the playlist from those normalized files. Re-encoding is also the route when you need filters or the destination cannot decode the original codec. Test transitions, audio sync, and the complete output path with sample files before scheduling a long event.

4. Create the YouTube Live destination
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream.
- Open Stream settings, reveal the stream details if necessary, and copy the RTMPS URL and stream key.
- Use the RTMPS endpoint for secure transport. Depending on how the FFmpeg output is configured, the key may need to be appended to the URL as the stream name, in the form
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions explain where to find the values; its Live Streaming API documentation describes stream ingestion.
Treat the stream key like a password. Do not expose it in screenshots, public logs, repositories, or scripts shared with other people. Use a placeholder in examples and substitute the actual key privately when configuring your encoder.
5. Start FFmpeg and send the playlist
Streamcopy example
From the directory containing playlist.ffconcat and the media, a basic looping streamcopy command is:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat -c copy -f flv "RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY"
Replace the destination with the RTMPS URL and key from your Live Control Room. Do not publish the real destination string. Here, -re reads the prerecorded input at its native frame rate so it is paced for live output, while -stream_loop -1 requests an infinite loop of the input. The input options appear before -i because FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output. The FLV output muxer is commonly used with RTMP-family ingest; this command is not a guarantee that every source stream can be copied into a valid YouTube broadcast. Consult the FFmpeg manual and test with your actual files and FFmpeg build.

Re-encode example for a common H.264/AAC output
For a compatible concat input that needs encoding, this example produces H.264 video and AAC audio, with a 1080p30-oriented bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY"
This is an example, not a universal preset. It assumes the input can be decoded by the installed FFmpeg build and that 30 fps and the resulting 1080p output suit the material and connection. It does not scale the video; if input dimensions vary or are larger than the intended output, normalize them beforehand or add an appropriate scaling filter after deciding the target dimensions. If a file has no audio, the optional audio map allows FFmpeg to proceed; test the resulting output with your playlist.
6. Match encoder settings to the connection and source
YouTube’s encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. For H.264, YouTube’s current guidance accessed in 2026 recommends 5 Mbps at 1080p30 and 3 Mbps at 720p30. Those are resolution- and frame-rate-specific recommendations, not universal bitrates; consult YouTube’s encoder settings for the current guidance that matches your selected codec and output.

7. Test privately, then start the public event
- Start FFmpeg and check its console for input, mapping, encoder, and connection errors.
- Wait for the stream to appear in YouTube Live Control Room. Review the preview and stream-health messages before going live.
- Check both moving video and audio, including a transition between files. Confirm that the picture is stable, audio is present and synchronized, and the stream bitrate fits the connection.
- Use a private or unlisted test event where appropriate, then start the intended public event only after the preview and health checks are satisfactory.
YouTube explicitly advises creators to test before starting a live stream. A successful connection alone does not confirm that every transition, audio track, or loop behaves correctly.

Playlist will not parse or a transition breaks
- Check that the playlist starts with
ffconcat version 1.0, everyfileline names an existing file, and paths are valid from FFmpeg’s working directory. - Check escaping for spaces and special characters in paths.
- Compare stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. Normalize mismatched sources instead of relying on streamcopy.
- If transitions have gaps or artifacts, inspect duration metadata and whether stream lengths differ.
FFmpeg cannot connect or reports a TLS/SSL error
- Verify that you copied the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and did not substitute the ordinary RTMP endpoint.
- Check that your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. If the URL is correct but an SSL error persists, YouTube’s RTMPS help page suggests trying port 443.
- Re-copy the destination details if necessary, but keep the stream key private while troubleshooting.
The preview is poor or the stream is unstable
- Test with representative moving video and audio, not only a static opening frame.
- Check the connection’s reliable upload capacity against the selected bitrate and review YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- Reduce the output demand or re-encode to settings appropriate for the available connection and source.
The stream is interrupted for content
Check YouTube Studio for a strike and confirm that you have the necessary rights and permissions for every video and audio track. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a stream may be interrupted or terminated for copyright or Community Guidelines issues. Tamil-language content is subject to the same rights obligations as content in other languages. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the playlist to keep running without leaving a computer and connection on at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use FFmpeg concat with MP4 files?
Yes, when the MP4 inputs have compatible streams and their codecs are accepted by the chosen output. The container extension alone does not establish compatibility.
Can I keep the actual stream key in my FFmpeg command?
The destination needs the key, but avoid saving or sharing it in a public command, log, screenshot, or script. Treat it as a credential.
Does Tamil-language video need different FFmpeg settings?
Tamil does not require special streaming settings by itself. Choose settings based on the media’s streams, desired output, and available upload capacity.
