To stream a still image with music continuously, loop the image and audio inputs in FFmpeg, encode the output in a YouTube-compatible format, and send it to the RTMPS address and stream key for a YouTube Live broadcast. The command below is a starting point—not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. You still need to test the feed and plan for process, power, and network failures.
What you need before you start
- A still image and music file that FFmpeg can read.
- An installed FFmpeg build with the required input demuxers, H.264 and AAC encoders, and RTMPS output support. Check the build with
ffmpeg -version; consult its help output if an option is unavailable. FFmpeg documents real-time input pacing, looping, and related options in its documentation. - A YouTube channel that can create encoder-based live streams, plus a stream’s RTMPS ingestion URL and stream key from YouTube Studio.
- A stable upload connection that can sustain your chosen video and audio bitrate, with room for network variation.
- Permission to broadcast both the image and music on YouTube. Having a copy of a file does not by itself establish that you have streaming rights.
Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder-based live stream. Interface labels can change; use the controls presented for your channel.
- Copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown for that specific stream. YouTube’s API describes these as an ingestion address and stream name; encoders may combine them in the form
SERVER_URL/STREAM_NAME. Use the values YouTube supplies rather than guessing an endpoint. See the LiveStreams API resource. - Use RTMPS for this workflow. YouTube recommends it as an encrypted form of RTMP in its RTMPS ingestion guidance.
- Keep the key private. YouTube says the key tells an encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it; treat it like a password. Do not publish it in a screenshot, shared command, or log. If it is exposed, reset it in the stream settings. See Manage live stream settings.
Run FFmpeg with a looping image and music
Replace image.jpg and music.mp3 with your filenames, and replace the placeholder destination with the RTMPS URL and key for your stream. Never paste a real key into a public example.

ffmpeg -re -loop 1 -framerate 30 -i image.jpg
-re -stream_loop -1 -i music.mp3
-c:v libx264 -tune stillimage -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60
-b:v 2.5M -maxrate 2.5M -bufsize 5M
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'
The image input’s -loop 1 keeps producing frames; -stream_loop -1 repeats the music indefinitely. The -re options pace file reading at real-time speed, which FFmpeg documents as useful for streaming from files. The command is an illustrative starting configuration synthesized from FFmpeg and YouTube guidance, not a tested result. Option behavior can depend on your FFmpeg version, build, and input demuxer; check the installed build and its help if the command fails. See FFmpeg’s documentation.

Choose the output dimensions deliberately
This command does not force 720p: without a scale filter, the image’s dimensions determine the video dimensions. Make sure the image has the size and aspect ratio you intend to stream. If you need a different output size, add a suitable scale filter and check that the result is not stretched or cropped unexpectedly. The example uses 30 fps.

Understand the example’s encoding values
At 30 fps, -g 60 sets a nominal 60-frame GOP, or two seconds between keyframes. YouTube’s current encoder settings page recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. The example uses H.264 video, AAC audio, a 44.1 kHz sample rate, and 128 kbps audio. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and CBR rate control among its encoder guidance; it recommends 44.1 kHz stereo audio at 128 kbps. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
The example’s video bitrate is 2.5 Mbps. YouTube lists 2–6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 0.3–3 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps. Those are recommended ranges, not guarantees of picture quality or viewer reach. Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain and monitor stream health. The example is not automatically a suitable bitrate for every image size or network.

Test the feed before making it public
- Start FFmpeg and watch its output for errors. Confirm that the process continues running and is sending data.
- Check the Live Control Room preview for the expected image and audible music. Confirm the video is the intended size and that audio is not silent, clipped, or distorted.
- Check YouTube’s stream status and health messages. Resolve warnings before sharing the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; see its live streaming tips and health status messages.
- Start or confirm the broadcast using the Live Control Room controls and settings for your stream. Test privately or unlisted where those options are available to your channel.
What 24/7 means—and what it does not guarantee
FFmpeg can keep reading looped inputs, but one running command does not ensure an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. The process can exit, files can be unreadable, or the computer, power, network, or YouTube connection can fail. YouTube distinguishes the incoming liveStream feed from the viewer-facing liveBroadcast; its API guide describes a channel using a 24/7 feed alongside a separate event broadcast. See Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.

For an unattended setup, arrange for the host to stay powered and connected, capture logs, monitor YouTube’s health status, and use a process supervisor that can restart FFmpeg after an exit. These are operational precautions, not a promise of uninterrupted service. FFmpeg’s all-options documentation includes an RTMP FIFO muxer example that attempts recovery after temporary network failure, but its options may not suit every build or RTMPS setup. Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports an input or option error | The installed build, input demuxer, filename, or option syntax differs from what the command expects. | Check ffmpeg -version, confirm both paths and file formats, and consult the installed build’s help. Test the image and audio inputs separately if needed. |
| YouTube does not receive the feed | The RTMPS URL or key is incorrect, belongs to another stream, or was entered in the wrong format. | Copy the URL and key again from that stream’s YouTube controls. Do not guess a generic endpoint; keep the key private. |
| The preview has the wrong size or shape | The output follows the image dimensions because the command has no scale filter. | Use an image with appropriate dimensions or deliberately add a scale filter; inspect the preview for stretching or cropping. |
| YouTube reports bitrate or keyframe health issues | The upload cannot sustain the chosen rate, or the GOP interval is unsuitable. | Check the selected resolution and frame rate against YouTube’s recommended bitrate ranges, reduce the bitrate if necessary, and keep keyframes at the recommended two-second interval and no more than four seconds apart. See encoder settings. |
| Video works but audio is missing or rejected | The audio file may be silent, unreadable, or encoded with settings YouTube does not accept. | Verify the file plays and contains sound; check FFmpeg output and use a supported audio codec and sample rate. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 44.1 kHz stereo at 128 kbps. |
| The stream stops after running for a while | FFmpeg exited, the host lost power or connectivity, or the connection to YouTube dropped. | Inspect FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s health messages, restore the feed, and add supervision, monitoring, and suitable power/network resilience for unattended use. |
Preflight checklist
- Both files open correctly, and the music contains usable audio.
- Your FFmpeg build supports the chosen input loop options, encoders, and output protocol.
- The output dimensions and frame rate are intentional, not assumed from the example.
- The bitrate is sustainable on your upload connection; the keyframe interval is no more than four seconds, with two seconds recommended by YouTube.
- You have the correct RTMPS URL and stream key from the stream’s YouTube controls, and the key is kept secret.
- You have inspected a test preview and addressed any YouTube health messages.
- You are authorized to stream the image and music and follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. The applicable rights for a particular file or channel cannot be determined from the encoder settings.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a home computer, power supply, or internet connection to be responsible for keeping the encoder running, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded material from the cloud; it does not broadcast a live camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs from the cloud.
- One flat price per slot for any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card; one free day per account.
- Monthly: $9.99 per month.
