To stream recorded church services on YouTube Live using a Linux server, create or schedule a broadcast in YouTube Studio, then use FFmpeg on the server to send the recording to YouTube’s ingest URL with the stream key. Prefer RTMPS, test the file and internet connection before the service, and monitor YouTube’s preview and stream health. YouTube may take up to 24 hours to enable live streaming for a first-time channel.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus access to its Live Control Room.
- A Linux server with FFmpeg installed and a network connection capable of sustaining the stream’s upload bitrate.
- A recorded service that plays correctly and whose video and audio formats are supported by the FFmpeg build installed on the server.
- Permission to broadcast the service’s music, readings, video clips, and other third-party material, including any rights needed for the YouTube archive.
YouTube Live is still a live broadcast even when the source is prerecorded: the encoder sends the file as a timed stream. It is not the same as uploading an ordinary video. YouTube allows software encoders, and FFmpeg documents sending file input to an RTMP server, but a generic example cannot guarantee that a particular file, Linux package, or network will work without testing. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.
Check the recording and rights
Verify the media file
Play the recording from beginning to end, or at least inspect representative sections, to confirm the picture, intended audio, and timing are correct. Check that the installed FFmpeg build can read the file before scheduling the broadcast. FFmpeg protocol documentation describes streaming methods, not compatibility with every media format or package build.
Clear content for a live broadcast
Review music, video clips, readings, and other third-party material for the intended live broadcast and any resulting archive. YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can replace the stream with a placeholder, trigger a warning, interrupt or terminate the broadcast, or lead to access restrictions after strikes. Even if a church has a license, a rights holder may still need to add its channel to a Content ID allowlist. Requirements vary by jurisdiction and agreement; church-sector guidance such as the Church of Scotland’s worship and copyright guidance is a prompt for local review, not universal legal advice.

Create the YouTube broadcast and get the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create a new stream or schedule one for the service time. Choose the appropriate visibility and other broadcast details.
- Open the stream settings and copy the ingest URL and stream key for the encoder. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or put it in shell history, logs, or publicly readable configuration.
- If this is the channel’s first live broadcast, allow up to 24 hours for live streaming to become available.
Keep the Live Control Room open for the test and service. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to find stream settings and how to manage the broadcast: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
Choose protocol and encoder settings
Use RTMPS for an ordinary service stream
YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary low-latency streaming; it is RTMP carried over an SSL connection. Use the RTMPS ingest address YouTube supplies if your FFmpeg build and encoder configuration support it. HLS ingestion is an alternative for HDR or codecs not supported over RTMP, but YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments. For a typical prerecorded service, RTMPS is the straightforward choice unless a specific codec or HDR requirement points to HLS. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and its HLS ingestion guidance.

Match video, audio, and bitrate to the connection
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; up to 60 frames per second; constant bitrate encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Its H.264 bitrate recommendations are shown below. These are YouTube configuration recommendations, not proof that your server’s uplink can sustain them.
| Output format | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate appropriate to the recording and to upload capacity you have measured. Leave headroom for network variation rather than assuming a nominal connection speed is continuously available. YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and audio and checking stream health.

Send the file from Linux with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation includes a real-time file-to-RTMP example and lists RTMPS among supported RTMP variants. The command below is a starting pattern, not a production-ready command for every source file or FFmpeg build. Substitute the ingest URL and key from YouTube, protect the key, and select encoding options that match your source, installed encoders, and YouTube’s current settings.
ffmpeg -re -i "service-recording.mp4" -c:v libx264 -b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"
-rereads the file at its native playback rate instead of sending it as fast as possible.-inames the input recording.-c:v libx264selects H.264 encoding when that encoder is available in the installed build.-b:v,-maxrate, and-bufsizeset video rate-control values; adjust them to the chosen output and measured uplink.-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP, which is a two-second interval at 30 fps. If the output frame rate differs, choose a GOP that produces YouTube’s recommended two-second keyframe interval, without exceeding four seconds.-c:a aac -b:a 128kselects AAC audio at the specified bitrate, if suitable for the source and build.-f flvuses the FLV container expected by this RTMP-style output workflow.
The example does not explicitly set output resolution or frame rate, and assumes a 30 fps target when interpreting -g 60. If you need to scale, change frame rate, preserve the source encoding, or use a different codec, verify the relevant FFmpeg options and YouTube compatibility for your build; do not copy flags blindly. FFmpeg documents protocols rather than certifying a complete church-service configuration for a particular Linux distribution.

Avoid exposing the stream key in a shared script, process log, or shell history. Use a restricted configuration or another secret-handling method appropriate to your server, and ensure troubleshooting output does not reveal it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test, start, and close the broadcast
- Run a short test using a representative section of the service with realistic movement and audio. Verify that the server can sustain the selected bitrate.
- Check the incoming preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm picture, sound, timing, and stream health before the scheduled service.
- At broadcast time, start FFmpeg and confirm YouTube is receiving a stable signal. Use the Studio controls to start the scheduled broadcast when applicable.
- When the service is over, stop the encoder and end the broadcast in YouTube Studio as appropriate. Check the resulting archive afterward; YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Archive behavior can change, so verify the result rather than treating it as permanent storage.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show an incoming signal | Wrong ingest URL or stream key, live streaming not yet enabled, or an unsupported output setup. | Recheck the stream settings in Live Control Room, confirm first-time enablement is complete, and review FFmpeg output for connection errors without exposing the key. |
| Preview stutters or stream health degrades | The selected bitrate exceeds sustainable upload capacity or the connection varies. | Measure the server’s upload capacity, lower bitrate or output resolution, and repeat a representative test. |
| Video is rejected or missing | The source, chosen codec, or installed FFmpeg build may not match the output settings. | Confirm FFmpeg can decode the recording and that the selected codec and output are supported by the ingest protocol. |
| Audio is absent or wrong | The recording’s audio track or the selected audio encoding may be unsuitable. | Check the input’s audio track, listen to the test preview, and adjust the FFmpeg audio mapping or codec options for the file. |
| Broadcast is interrupted after a content match | YouTube detected third-party material; a license alone may not satisfy Content ID allowlisting. | Review rights for the specific material and broadcast, and contact the rights holder about allowlisting where required. Do not assume a church license guarantees uninterrupted transmission. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you prefer not to keep a Linux server and its connection running for the broadcast, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded recordings. Upload the service recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload at its existing quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and includes one free day with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
