To show Hindi subtitles during a YouTube Live podcast, you must generate captions outside YouTube’s built-in live caption feature and send them to YouTube. YouTube’s live automatic captions are available in English only. Use a captioning tool that can recognize your show’s Hindi and deliver captions through YouTube’s supported caption workflow, then rehearse the setup before going live.
Choose how captions will reach viewers
There are two distinct ways to put words on a live video. Closed captions are a selectable caption track viewers can turn on; they are sent to YouTube as caption data. Burned-in subtitles are text rendered into the video image, such as an OBS text overlay. They are visible to viewers but are not selectable captions, and cannot be switched off independently.
YouTube says live captions must be sent to it. Its documented routes include embedding EIA 608/CEA 708 captions in the stream or using supported caption software to send captions through HTTP POSTs to a captions ingestion URL. Set up the YouTube Live stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the stream settings.
- In your encoder, such as OBS, enter the stream URL and key, then connect the podcast’s video and audio sources.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your stream.

Generate and deliver Hindi captions
Route A: Embed closed captions in the outgoing stream
If the encoder and caption generator both support embedded captions, enable the stream’s Closed captions option, select Embedded 608/708, and configure the captioning software to embed EIA 608/CEA 708 data. Confirm the complete signal path: speech recognition must produce captions, the encoder must embed them, and YouTube must receive them as caption data.
Route B: Send captions through caption software
YouTube also documents a workflow in which supported caption software sends captions by HTTP POST to a captions ingestion URL. This is a separate delivery route from embedding captions in the video stream. Check the software’s current YouTube compatibility and setup documentation, and follow YouTube’s live caption requirements rather than assuming that any text output or speech-to-text tool can post captions.

Select a Hindi speech recognizer
YouTube’s built-in live automatic-caption option is English-only; the availability of Hindi captions on some regular uploaded videos does not mean Hindi is available for YouTube’s built-in live captions. You need a separate speech-to-text caption generator that supports the Hindi variety, pronunciation and code-switching used by your podcast. YouTube describes its live automatic caption availability and limitations at Use automatic captioning.
OBS project pages describe possible captioning workflows, but their descriptions do not establish Hindi recognition support or accuracy. OBS-captions-plugin describes Google Speech Recognition and an open-caption option using OBS text sources: OBS-captions-plugin documentation. LocalVocal describes local recognition and translation, YouTube caption posting, and text-file output: LocalVocal documentation. Treat either as a candidate to test, not a guarantee of Hindi support; verify the current build, dependencies, language configuration and caption delivery method.

YouTube names StreamText.Net as a cloud-based caption delivery system compatible with speech-to-text platforms. The cited YouTube material does not establish whether it accepts a particular Hindi recognizer’s output, its current language coverage or its pricing. Confirm those details with the provider before choosing it.
Rehearse before the live podcast
- Use the same YouTube stream, encoder, caption generator and audio routing planned for the broadcast.
- Speak naturally in Hindi, including the English or other language terms and speaker changes typical of the show.
- Check that the intended microphone or mixer feed—not desktop audio, a muted input or another source—is being transcribed.
- For closed captions, verify that captions arrive as a viewer-selectable track. For an OBS text overlay, confirm that the text is legible and synchronized, and remember it is burned into the picture.
- Test the full conversation flow, including interruptions, pauses and any handoff between hosts or guests. Check for caption delay and whether captions stay synchronized.
- Review the output for recognition errors and confirm that the archived video behaves as expected; do not assume an external live caption workflow will automatically create corrected captions for the recording.
The right caption route depends on Hindi and code-switching recognition, whether viewers need selectable captions, compatibility with YouTube’s ingestion method, delay and synchronization, handling of multiple speakers, and whether captions can be corrected or reused in the archive. YouTube’s documentation defines delivery options and platform limits, but does not rank third-party Hindi recognizers on those criteria.

Improve the audio and check captions
Caption quality depends on the speech signal as well as the recognizer. YouTube identifies poor audio, unrecognized speech, overlapping speakers and simultaneous languages as factors that can prevent captions from working well. Give each speaker a clear, consistent microphone signal, avoid talking over one another where possible, and review automated text during the rehearsal. A microphone may improve audio capture, but no particular microphone guarantees accurate transcription.
Machine-generated captions can misrepresent accents, dialects, pronunciation and noisy speech. If accuracy matters for names, quotations or technical terms, have a person monitor and correct the text where the chosen workflow permits it.

Troubleshoot common problems
- No captions appear: Confirm the recognizer is running, its language is configured for the podcast, and it is receiving the correct audio. Then verify that the caption output uses the delivery route configured in YouTube—embedded 608/708 or supported caption software with the ingestion URL.
- Captions appear only as text on the video: The text is likely an OBS overlay, not a closed-caption track. That is expected for burned-in subtitles; use a supported closed-caption delivery route if viewers need to toggle captions.
- Hindi is missing or inaccurate: Check the recognizer’s current Hindi language support and settings, then test with the show’s actual dialect, names and code-switching. A plugin description alone does not prove that its current build recognizes Hindi reliably.
- Captions lag behind speech: Recheck the audio source and the caption delivery path, then rehearse with the intended stream configuration. Measure whether the delay is consistent and acceptable for conversation before relying on that setup.
- Text becomes unreliable during group discussion: Reduce overlapping speech, keep microphone levels consistent and ensure each speaker is audible to the recognizer. YouTube specifically identifies overlapping speakers and simultaneous languages as potential caption problems.
- Live captions differ from the recording: YouTube notes that its built-in live automatic captions do not remain on the ended stream and that later VOD captions may differ. This caveat applies to the built-in live automatic captions described by YouTube, not necessarily to captions delivered through every external workflow.
