How to Migrate a 24/7 YouTube Stream from OBS to the Cloud

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can move the encoder and video playout from OBS to a cloud service without changing YouTube as the destination. Record your current OBS and YouTube settings, configure the cloud service with YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key, test the feed and recovery behavior, then cut over with a rollback plan. Do not assume the switch will be interruption-free: the reviewed setup guidance does not promise a seamless handoff.

What changes—and what stays the same

OBS currently encodes and sends your program to YouTube. In a cloud migration, a service takes over some or all of that work: it may play uploaded videos, process a live contribution, or provide a remote production studio. YouTube remains the destination. The new encoder needs the correct YouTube stream URL and key, and you verify its feed in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube describes a stream key as the stream’s “password and address”; keep it private and reset it if exposed. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains stream keys, latency, DVR and related controls.

Choose the cloud pattern that matches your OBS setup

Do not treat cloud services as interchangeable. First decide whether OBS is mainly playing a prerecorded library, producing a live show from scenes and sources, or performing specialized broadcast processing.

Need Relevant option What it is suited to
Continuous playback of prerecorded videos StreamNeo Always-on YouTube playout from uploaded videos, looped in the cloud. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot; the first day is free.
Cloud-hosted 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming Gyre YouTube’s encoder directory describes Gyre as a cloud-based 24/7 tool that can run without a dedicated PC. Check the service’s current capabilities and terms before choosing it.
Advanced live processing AWS Elemental MediaLive YouTube’s directory lists it for broadcast-grade processing. It is a different category from simple prerecorded playout.
Browser-based production workflows Grabyo Producer YouTube’s directory describes it for cloud-native production workflows, contribution and distribution.
Custom technical pipeline Google Cloud Live Stream API A technical team can build an input and encoding workflow. Google recommends SRT over RTMP when an encoder supports it for this API workflow; that is not a universal requirement for YouTube.

The service descriptions above come from YouTube’s encoder guide and directory and Google Cloud Live Stream API documentation. Compare services on whether they reproduce OBS scenes and overlays, supported input protocols and codecs, reconnect and failover behavior, monitoring, control of YouTube metadata, archive or recording limits, support, account access, and total cost for your schedule and bitrate. Current prices and regional availability are not established here; check the provider’s current terms before committing.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

1. Document the OBS and YouTube configuration

Before changing anything, create a migration record. It is your reference when configuring the new service and your rollback checklist if the test fails.

  • Program: list OBS video and audio sources, scene order, overlays, transitions, resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, keyframe interval, audio format, and any scheduled or automated start and stop.
  • Local outputs: note whether OBS also records locally, where recordings are saved, and whether you need that function after migration.
  • YouTube broadcast: record the title, privacy setting, latency mode, DVR setting, and auto-start and auto-stop choices. YouTube’s live stream settings include these controls and allow custom stream keys for reuse.
  • Connection details: identify the stream URL and key the cloud encoder must use. Confirm whether your existing key is reusable for the intended broadcast; never include the key in a public document or screenshot.
  • Retention needs: decide how the continuous program should be recorded or segmented if you need a full-day archive.

2. Configure the cloud service for YouTube

  1. Create or select the YouTube broadcast. Set its title, privacy, latency and DVR options deliberately. Reuse the existing broadcast or key only if that matches your service’s workflow; otherwise create the required broadcast and use the key associated with it.
  2. Copy the ingest URL and stream key into the cloud encoder. Vendor screens differ, but both connection details are required. Treat the key like a password. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube and update the cloud service with the replacement.
  3. Use RTMPS where the service supports it and requires it. Google’s RTMPS guide describes it as RTMP tunneled through SSL and specifies a valid endpoint, port 443 and hostname SNI for authentication. A failed connection may result from using the wrong protocol, endpoint or port; follow the specific service’s documented endpoint rather than guessing.
  4. Match the service’s input requirements. Confirm supported codecs, protocols, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and audio format for your source. For a custom Google Cloud Live Stream API workflow, Google publishes input bitrate guidance including 8 Mbps for 720p at 25–30 fps H.264 and 20 Mbps for 1080p at 50–60 fps H.264. These are Google Cloud API figures, not universal YouTube settings.

3. Test the feed and recovery before cutover

Run a controlled test before stopping the established OBS stream. This is operational guidance, not a guarantee of uninterrupted switching: the official setup material does not specify a universal handoff procedure or promise zero downtime.

  1. Test source ingest. Confirm that the cloud service receives the intended video or playlist and that audio is present.
  2. Check the YouTube preview and status. In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that the incoming feed appears and that YouTube recognizes the stream. Review the preview for the right scene or video, correct aspect and resolution, intelligible audio, and acceptable audio/video sync.
  3. Test output quality. Watch the YouTube output on a separate device or browser. Confirm that motion, text and audio remain acceptable at the intended quality and that the cloud encoder is not silently outputting a different format.
  4. Test interruption recovery. Find out what the selected service does if its YouTube connection drops: whether it retries, how quickly it retries, and whether intervention is needed. Test this in a controlled window if the service permits it, rather than discovering the behavior during an important broadcast.
  5. Confirm monitoring and alerts. Know where to see source health, encoder state and YouTube connection status, and who will receive or act on alerts.
  6. Keep OBS ready to restore. Retain the documented settings and a clear rollback sequence until the cloud stream has proved stable for your needs.

Encoding guidance is service-specific

Do not copy another provider’s recommended values as universal rules. For its own live-input service, Cloudflare recommends CBR when possible, a 2–8 second GOP/keyframe interval, and reconnect configuration; it documents H.264 video and AAC audio input support. Those are Cloudflare-specific requirements and recommendations. If you use its recording feature, Cloudflare says recordings of live videos longer than seven days are truncated to seven days. Cloudflare Stream documentation covers its service-specific behavior.

4. Cut over with a rollback plan

Choose a time when you can watch both the cloud service and YouTube. Avoid promising viewers there will be no interruption: starting a second encoder or switching its connection can disrupt delivery, and the reviewed vendor guidance does not guarantee a seamless encoder handoff.

  1. Confirm the cloud feed is ready and the YouTube preview/status shows the expected incoming program.
  2. Use the selected service’s documented procedure to make the cloud encoder the active source. Avoid having two encoders compete for the same broadcast unless the service explicitly supports that arrangement.
  3. Watch YouTube playback and the cloud service’s connection status during the change. Check picture, audio and continuity, not just a “connected” indicator.
  4. If the cloud feed does not stabilize within your planned window, stop or disconnect it as appropriate and restore OBS using the saved settings. Verify the OBS feed in Live Control Room.
  5. Once the cloud stream is working, monitor reconnect events, output quality and alerts. Keep the OBS rollback information until you have confidence in the new operating process.

Plan latency and 24/7 archives separately

YouTube explains that lower latency can increase playback buffering, while DVR lets viewers pause and rewind during a live stream. For a mostly passive 24/7 channel, low latency may not be important unless you interact with viewers in real time. Set latency and DVR based on the viewing experience you want, not merely to match an OBS preset.

YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single 24-hour broadcast will become one complete archive. If retaining the entire program matters, arrange deliberate recording or segmentation and verify where the resulting files are stored. Cloudflare’s separate seven-day recording limit applies to its service, not to YouTube’s archive policy.

Costs and operational trade-offs

A cloud service removes the need to keep your home computer and connection running for the stream, but the right comparison is the total cost and operational fit—not just the monthly service fee. Include the intended schedule and bitrate, storage and retention, any required processing, monitoring, support, and the cost of maintaining a local backup if you need one. Provider pricing and affiliate terms are not established here, so verify current costs directly with the service you are considering.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your OBS setup is primarily looping prerecorded videos rather than producing a camera-based live show, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it keeps an always-on YouTube stream running from the cloud, plays uploaded videos at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and gives the first day free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep using my existing YouTube stream key after migrating?

Often a reusable custom key can be used, but confirm that it matches the broadcast and cloud service workflow; reset it if it has been exposed.

Can I use this approach for a live camera show rather than prerecorded videos?

Yes, if the selected cloud service accepts your live contribution and supports the production workflow you need. StreamNeo, specifically, plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera.
