You can keep a recorded algebra lesson live on YouTube from a Mac by sending a looping video or playlist from OBS Studio through YouTube’s Live Control Room. The Mac, OBS, lesson files and internet connection must remain available while the local encoder is streaming. First check that your channel can go live, then test the stream before relying on it for a long broadcast. A 24-hour stream is not guaranteed to become one complete YouTube replay.
Before you start: check channel access and prepare your lessons
- Confirm live-stream eligibility. YouTube currently requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction during the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, and YouTube’s current help page says streamers must be at least 16. Check the latest requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility help before scheduling a lesson.
- Prepare video and audio you have rights to broadcast. This tutorial does not establish detailed copyright or monetization rules. Do not assume that owning a recording of a lesson gives you permission to use every included image, music track or other material. YouTube says monetization may be available to channels in the YouTube Partner Program; check current program eligibility separately before relying on it.
- Keep the lesson files accessible. For a local OBS setup, store the videos somewhere the Mac can read throughout the broadcast. If the files are on external storage, make sure it remains connected.
- Check the course at phone size. Algebra notation can become difficult to read in a small player. Review equations at normal phone playback size and listen to the actual stream output; there is no single course-specific canvas or layout prescribed here.
Create the YouTube encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or schedule an encoder stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. In OBS, you will enter these under Settings → Stream. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a screen recording, lesson, screenshot or public document.
- If you scheduled the broadcast, plan to return to Live Control Room after OBS starts sending video. YouTube’s encoder workflow may show a preview that you must confirm with Go live before the scheduled event is actually public.
YouTube describes an encoder as software that converts video into a digital format for streaming. OBS is the local encoder in this workflow; it must send the feed for the live broadcast to continue. See YouTube’s encoder-stream instructions for its current Live Control Room steps.

Set up OBS to loop one lesson or a course playlist
Loop a single lesson
- In OBS, create a scene for the course feed.
- In the scene’s Sources panel, add a Media Source and point it to the local lesson video.
- Enable the source’s Loop property. OBS defines this setting as repeating the file once playback has completed.
- Check the scene preview, audio meters and actual audio output. Confirm that the lesson begins and reaches its end as expected.
Loop multiple lesson files
- Install VLC on the Mac if it is not already installed. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC; without it, the source may not appear.
- Add a VLC Video source to the course scene and add the lesson files to its playlist in the order you want them played.
- Enable Loop Playlist, then verify that OBS advances through the files and returns to the beginning when the final item ends.
OBS lists Media Source and VLC Video source availability on macOS. The VLC source is useful when a course comprises separate recordings; a single Media Source is simpler for one repeating lesson. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.

- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream URL and private key from Live Control Room. Use RTMPS when configuring the connection, as YouTube recommends.
- Choose a resolution and quality that your upload connection can sustain. YouTube does not prescribe one universal bitrate for every connection and stream; use its current encoder settings guidance and test upload capacity rather than choosing a number blindly. Keep the lesson’s equations readable in the resulting picture.
- Run a short test stream before the first full broadcast. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages in Live Control Room and inspect the preview for video, audio and legibility problems. OBS also recommends testing for a few minutes before a real stream.
- For a scheduled stream, start streaming from OBS, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, and click Go live if prompted. To end the broadcast, end it in Live Control Room and stop sending content from OBS.
YouTube recommends matching stream quality to connection capacity, testing upload bitrate, using RTMPS and monitoring stream health. Its settings and available controls can change, so consult the current YouTube encoder settings help when selecting resolution and bitrate.

What must stay running during a local 24/7 broadcast
With OBS sending a locally looped source, keep the Mac awake, OBS running, the lesson files accessible and the internet connection available for the broadcast’s duration. If the Mac sleeps, OBS closes, a file becomes unavailable or connectivity fails, the encoder may stop sending the feed. A local encoder setup cannot guarantee uninterrupted operation for an individual Mac or connection.
Will YouTube save the whole 24-hour stream?
Do not count on a complete automatic replay of one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast. YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not promise a complete automatic archive for a stream lasting 24 hours. If students need replay access to every lesson, consider shorter broadcasts or make a separate local recording, then verify the archive and recording in Studio.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS cannot connect to YouTube | The stream URL or key may be incorrect, or the channel may not be eligible for live streaming. | Recheck the event’s URL and key in Live Control Room, keep the key private, and confirm channel verification and live-stream access. |
| The scheduled event has a preview but is not live | The encoder is sending its feed, but the scheduled broadcast may still need a separate confirmation. | Open Live Control Room and click Go live when the preview is ready. |
| A lesson stops instead of repeating | The Media Source loop property may be off, or playlist looping may not be enabled. | For one file, enable Loop on the Media Source. For several files, enable Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source. |
| VLC Video is missing from OBS sources | VLC may not be installed on the Mac. | Install VLC and check OBS’s source list again. |
| Video or audio health warnings appear | The chosen quality may exceed the connection’s upload capacity, or the audio/source setup may be wrong. | Run another short test, choose a quality suited to the connection, monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages, and inspect OBS’s preview and audio meters. |
| The stream stops after the Mac is left unattended | The local encoder, source files, computer or connection may no longer be available. | Keep the Mac awake and OBS running, confirm lesson-file access, and test the complete setup before leaving it unattended. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a Mac and home connection running continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or OBS has to stay on. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams, not camera broadcasts.
