To restore an encoder-based YouTube lecture stream after a key reset, open YouTube Studio → Create → Go Live → Stream, copy the new stream key, replace the old key in your encoder, then reconnect it and confirm the incoming feed in Live Control Room. Only a channel owner or manager can reset a key. YouTube does not promise that rotating a key preserves uninterrupted playback on a 24/7 stream.
Replace the reset key and verify the feed
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open the Stream tab.
- Copy the new key. Find Stream key and select Reset beside the hidden key. Copy the newly generated key. YouTube Help says, “You must be a channel owner or manager to reset a stream key.” Editors and viewers do not have that permission. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
- Update the encoder. Replace the saved key in the encoder’s YouTube destination or stream settings. Do not leave the old key in a profile that the encoder may reuse.
- Check the stream URL too. YouTube’s encoder setup uses both a stream URL and a stream key. Confirm the encoder is pointed at the URL shown in YouTube’s settings as well as using the new key. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Reconnect and verify. Start or reconnect the encoder, then check Live Control Room for the preview and stream-health status. If this is a scheduled-stream workflow, YouTube’s documented steps are to wait for the preview and select Go live. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream
If the stream still will not connect
Read the stream-health message before resetting again
Live Control Room can show stream health, specific error messages, and troubleshooting instructions. Use the displayed error to identify what to fix rather than repeatedly rotating the key. YouTube Help: See your live stream’s metrics

- Encoder reports an authentication or startup error: Confirm that the current key—not a previously saved one—is in the active encoder profile, then start the encoder again. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for an encoder startup error is to get a new key from Live Control Room, paste it into the encoder, and start the encoder.
- No incoming preview appears: Check both the key and stream URL in the encoder against YouTube’s settings. A correct key paired with the wrong URL can still prevent the encoder from sending the intended feed.
- You use a software login rather than a stream key: The key-reset procedure does not apply to that connection method. YouTube advises contacting the software provider’s support.
- You lack the Reset option: Ask a channel owner or manager to perform the reset; editor or viewer access is not sufficient.
What a key reset means for a 24/7 stream
The key is the credential the encoder uses to send video for YouTube to accept. Resetting it creates a new key, so the encoder must be updated. YouTube’s cited instructions explain how to restore an encoder connection, but do not say whether rotating a key preserves the existing 24/7 session, keeps the watch page continuously available, or how quickly viewers will see the feed again. Do not assume the stream remained uninterrupted: verify the preview and stream health, and check the live watch page after the feed returns.

Reduce the chance of another prolonged interruption
YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events and suggest checking the preview and testing encoder failover.
