Build any timed breaks—such as an intermission card, silence, or a short break video—into that outgoing program. YouTube’s documented Live workflow schedules the event and accepts an encoder feed; it does not document native timed breaks between playlist items.
How the playlist and scheduled event fit together
There are two separate parts: YouTube schedules and hosts the live event, while an encoder or hosted playout service supplies the video and audio viewers see. A playlist in this workflow means a sequence of media files sent as one continuous live program. It does not mean YouTube Live automatically plays files from a playlist with timed breaks.

YouTube’s encoder guidance explains how to connect an encoder with the stream URL and stream key, but does not explain playlist authoring or timed-break insertion. Plan to create the break behavior in the playout software, or verify explicitly that a hosted service supports the exact break behavior you need.

Before scheduling: check channel eligibility and prepare the program
Confirm the channel can livestream
YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Resolve any eligibility issue before building an event around a broadcast time.

Decide what each break should do
Choose the break content and duration before configuring the playlist. For example, you might insert a still break screen with background audio, a silent intermission card, or a separate short video. Arrange those items in the same sequence the encoder will send them. Check how your chosen software handles transitions, gaps, playback completion, and repeats; those behaviors are not established merely because a tool can schedule or repeat videos.
Check rights and YouTube policies
Use recordings and break assets you have permission to broadcast. A scheduled event does not grant rights to music, footage, or other material in the program. Review YouTube’s current copyright and livestream policies for your content and channel, and do not assume that prerecorded material is exempt from enforcement or other YouTube rules.

Schedule the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and Live Control Room. Go to Create and choose Go live, then use Manage to schedule the stream. Interface labels can change, so confirm them in the current Studio interface.
- Create the scheduled event. Enter the event details and select the intended date and time. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance covers scheduled-stream settings. A scheduled event can be promoted, may appear to subscribers as upcoming, and can let viewers opt into a reminder.
- Choose the encoder workflow. Create the stream using the encoder option and note the connection details YouTube provides. Keep the event and its encoder feed associated with one another; scheduling the event alone does not start prerecorded playback.
- Review the event before airtime. Check its scheduled time, visibility and other settings, then use the available preview to confirm the incoming program before viewers are meant to see it.
Send a continuous playlist with breaks from an encoder
The exact playlist and break controls depend on the encoder or playout software and its version. YouTube documents the connection to an encoder, not a universal playlist editor, so configure playback and break timing in the selected tool.
- Build the sequence in your encoder or playout tool. Add the prerecorded videos in order, then add each break asset at the intended position. Set an explicit duration or playback behavior for every break if the software supports it.
- Configure the YouTube destination. In the encoder, select YouTube if offered, or enter the stream URL and stream key supplied for the scheduled event. YouTube describes these connection methods in its encoder setup instructions.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a secret destination credential. Do not publish it, put it in a public screenshot, or share it with anyone who should not be able to send video to your event.
- Check the preview and audio. Confirm the correct video and audio arrive in Live Control Room, including the break assets. Verify that the playlist advances as intended and that the output does not unintentionally go silent or stop between files.
- Start the encoder and confirm the event is live. Follow the start sequence required by your encoder and the current YouTube interface. Do not assume that starting one automatically starts the other: scheduled-event behavior depends on YouTube and encoder settings.
OBS and scheduled start or stop
The OBS Project forum’s YouTube setup guide notes that scheduled streams can behave differently from unscheduled ones: auto-start and auto-stop settings affect whether starting or stopping OBS also starts or ends the YouTube event. These controls are version-sensitive. Check the current OBS settings and the event state in Live Control Room before relying on unattended start or stop.

Choose a playout approach and verify timed breaks

Timing, archives, and operational checks
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Treat that as the behavior described by the current guidance, and check YouTube’s page again if the archive is important to a particular event. Do not assume the same outcome for a longer broadcast.
- Confirm the scheduled start time and event details in Live Control Room.
- Test the whole sequence, including the transition into and out of breaks, in the exact encoder or service version you will use.
- Verify audio continuity and that each break lasts for the intended period.
- Confirm whether the encoder’s auto-start and auto-stop settings require a separate action in YouTube.
- Keep the stream key private and have a recovery plan if the encoder or YouTube connection stops.
Troubleshooting common failures
The scheduled event is not receiving video
Check that the encoder is connected to the correct scheduled event and is using its current stream URL and key. Confirm the encoder is actually sending, then inspect Live Control Room for the incoming preview. If the key was exposed or may be wrong, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.

The event does not start or end when the encoder does
Review the current auto-start and auto-stop settings in both OBS (or the selected encoder) and YouTube. Scheduled events may require a separate Live Control Room action depending on those settings; test the sequence rather than assuming encoder start and event start are identical.
The playlist has a gap or the break appears at the wrong time
Inspect the sequence and each file’s end behavior in the playout software. Confirm whether it inserts a gap, transitions automatically, loops, or waits for an operator. Rebuild the sequence with an explicit break item or duration where supported, then test it end to end.
A hosted service schedules the playlist but does not insert breaks
Scheduling and repeating do not prove support for timed breaks between items. Confirm the feature with the service or use a playout workflow whose break insertion you can configure and verify.

The archive is missing or incomplete
Check the broadcast duration against YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic-archive guidance and review the current encoder instructions. Do not rely on automatic archiving for a stream that falls outside the stated duration.
