How to Stream a Prerecorded Video to YouTube Live with Streamlabs Desktop

Streamlabs Desktop can send an encoder feed to YouTube Live, but its official guide does not document local-video playback controls. Here is the verified setup and what to check before you go live.

You can use Streamlabs Desktop to send an encoder feed to YouTube Live, but the official Streamlabs Desktop setup guide does not document the exact controls for selecting and playing a local prerecorded video. That means there is no verified click-by-click Desktop procedure to give here. The reliable part is the YouTube encoder workflow: prepare the stream in YouTube Studio, connect Streamlabs with the YouTube stream URL and key, then preview, start, and monitor the broadcast. Do not confuse that with Streamlabs’ separately documented prerecorded-video scheduling feature for Talk Studio.

What Streamlabs Desktop does—and what is not documented

Streamlabs Desktop can act as an encoder for YouTube Live. Streamlabs’ current Desktop getting-started guide describes adding sources, configuring scenes and streaming details, and going live. It does not establish the current controls for choosing a local video file, starting or looping its playback, restarting it, or routing its audio. Because those details are not verified in that guide, treat the file-playback portion as something to confirm in the version of Desktop you have rather than following invented menu instructions.

Streamlabs has also published a prerecorded-video workflow for Talk Studio. That is a separate product, not evidence that Streamlabs Desktop has the same scheduling controls. The Talk Studio article describes scheduling, selecting “Pre-recorded video,” uploading a file, and entering event details; do not apply those steps as if they were Desktop controls. See Streamlabs’ Talk Studio article, updated April 25, 2025.

Check that your YouTube channel can go live

YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Check the channel’s eligibility before preparing a scheduled broadcast, especially if this is your first encoder stream. YouTube’s current requirements are listed in its live streaming prerequisites.

Prepare the stream in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio, choose Create, then Go Live.
  2. Use the Stream tab to create or configure the stream, or open Manage to schedule a future broadcast. Scheduling can help promote the event and let viewers receive reminders.
  3. Set the title, description, privacy, and other event details, then check them before broadcasting.
  4. Find the stream URL and stream key in YouTube’s encoder setup. Keep the key private: it is a credential that tells YouTube where to accept the encoder feed.

YouTube’s documented sequence is in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Exact labels and layout can change, so follow the current Live Control Room interface.

Connect Streamlabs Desktop and handle the video source

  1. In Streamlabs Desktop, use the current setup flow to configure a scene and choose YouTube as the streaming platform if that option is available.
  2. If Desktop instead asks for server and key details, copy YouTube’s stream URL into the server field and its stream key into the key field. Do not share or publish the key.
  3. Set up the prerecorded-video source only using controls you can verify in your installed Desktop version. Confirm that the video plays, its audio is audible, and the scene sends the intended picture and sound. The official Desktop guide does not specify the local-file selection, playback, looping, restart, or audio-routing controls, so this article cannot reliably name their buttons or menu paths.
  4. Before the actual event, test with representative moving footage and audio. Confirm the output resolution and frame rate you intend to send, and check that the stream remains healthy rather than assuming a static preview proves the whole file will play correctly.

Streamlabs’ documented general Desktop setup includes adding sources and scenes, selecting a platform, entering stream details, and using its go-live flow. The video-file controls themselves should be checked in the current Desktop build; do not substitute Talk Studio’s upload-and-schedule steps.

Check encoder settings and stream health

YouTube’s published encoder recommendations support H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Recommended audio codecs are AAC or MP3. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings for resolution-specific bitrate values; the appropriate bitrate depends on the chosen stream format, resolution, and frame rate, and the values may change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Test using motion and audio similar to the actual video, not only a still screen.
  • Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health during the broadcast and respond to warnings before they become prolonged quality problems.
  • Assess reliability against the upload connection available to the encoder and the resolution and frame rate you plan to send. An unstable upload can undermine an otherwise correct encoder configuration.

Preview, start, monitor, and end the broadcast

  1. Start the encoder output from Streamlabs Desktop when the event is ready.
  2. For a scheduled stream, wait for the encoder preview to appear in YouTube Live Control Room, then select Go live.
  3. Monitor the preview and stream health while the video runs. Check picture, audio, and any warnings in YouTube’s interface.
  4. End the broadcast in YouTube and stop sending content from the encoder according to the current interface. If archiving matters, check the current YouTube settings and keep a local copy as backup. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but this should not replace a backup you control.

Copyright and YouTube policy still apply

A prerecorded file is still live content when you broadcast it. YouTube requires compliance with its Community Guidelines and that you have the rights needed to exploit the content on Google services, including applicable music rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other rights participants. Use only video and audio you are authorized to rebroadcast; being prerecorded does not grant permission. Review the YouTube livestream terms and conditions before streaming.

Troubleshooting common problems

YouTube does not show an encoder preview

  • Possible cause: The encoder has not started sending, the stream URL or key is incorrect, or the channel is not eligible for live streaming.
  • What to check: Confirm the server URL and key against the current YouTube Studio stream setup, verify that Desktop is actually sending, and check channel eligibility. If live streaming was just enabled for the first time, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours.

The video appears but has no sound

  • Possible cause: The video’s audio is not reaching the encoder output or is not audible in the selected scene.
  • What to check: Test the same file and scene before going live, verify the audio path in the current Desktop version, and confirm that the stream’s preview includes sound. The official Desktop guide reviewed here does not specify local-file audio-routing controls.

The video does not play, loop, or restart as expected

  • Possible cause: Playback or looping behavior differs by source and Desktop version.
  • What to check: Test a representative portion and the end of the file in the installed version before scheduling. The official guide does not establish the local-video playback or looping controls, so do not assume Talk Studio’s prerecorded scheduling behavior applies.

The stream health warning indicates unstable delivery

  • Possible cause: The encoder’s upload connection or the selected output settings may not sustain the stream.
  • What to check: Test the intended motion, resolution, and frame rate; review YouTube’s current encoder guidance; and monitor stream health while broadcasting. Use CBR and the recommended two-second keyframe interval, within YouTube’s stated maximum of four seconds.

The broadcast ends but no archive is available

  • What to check: Confirm the stream duration and current YouTube archive settings, and retain a local backup when the recording matters. YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it is not a substitute for keeping your own copy.
