Use OBS Studio to send a video file from your Mac mini to YouTube as a live encoder feed: create a scene, add the file as a Media Source, enter the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, then check the preview before clicking Go live. Turn on the source’s Loop option if you want the video to repeat. The Mac mini must stay on and connected while OBS streams.
What you need before you start
- A Mac mini that meets the current OBS Studio macOS requirements. OBS currently lists macOS 13.0 or newer; check the OBS website for current installation requirements.
- OBS Studio installed, plus the pre-recorded video file stored locally on the Mac mini or an attached drive.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. YouTube says first-time live-streaming activation may take up to 24 hours.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the resolution and bitrate you choose.
This method streams the file through OBS as a live broadcast; it is not the same as uploading a regular YouTube video. You can create a scheduled event and its watch page in advance, then begin the encoder feed when ready. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the Live Control Room workflow.

Set up the YouTube live event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream using the encoder option.
- Set the title, description, visibility and other event details. YouTube supports public, private and unlisted privacy settings.
- In the stream settings, locate the stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as similar to a password and address: they route the encoder and authorize YouTube to accept its feed. Keep the key private; anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream. See Manage live stream settings.
Add the video to OBS on your Mac mini
- Open OBS Studio and create a scene for the broadcast, or select the scene you want to use.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Give the source a recognizable name.
- Select the local video file. OBS documents Media Source support on macOS and common file types including MP4 and MOV. If you move or rename the file later, update the source path in OBS.
- Enable Loop if the file should replay automatically after it ends. OBS documents this option as off by default. Leave it off for a one-time playback.
- Check that the video fits the canvas and that its audio is audible in OBS. If you need a playlist rather than a single looping file, OBS documents a VLC Video source; VLC must be installed for that source to appear. Details are in OBS Media Sources.
Connect OBS to YouTube and choose encoder settings
- In OBS, open Settings and then Stream. Choose YouTube as the service if available, or configure the server and key manually using the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Exact interface labels can vary by OBS version.
- Set the output resolution and frame rate to suit the source video and the upload connection. YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and supported video and audio codecs. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport where supported. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings and RTMPS guidance for its current requirements.
- For H.264, YouTube’s published examples are 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps; 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for 720p at 30 fps; and 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not a promise of picture quality or a Mac mini performance benchmark. Other resolutions, frame rates and codecs have different guidance.
- Use a bitrate your internet connection can sustain consistently. Leave headroom for normal network variation and test the actual connection; a speed-test result alone does not guarantee a stable stream.
Test the feed, then go live
- For a scheduled broadcast, YouTube advises setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- In OBS, select Start Streaming. Wait for the incoming video preview in YouTube Live Control Room, then verify the image and audio before selecting Go live for the scheduled event.
- During the broadcast, monitor the YouTube preview and OBS status for interrupted output, missing audio, or poor video quality. Confirm that the live event is accessible using its intended visibility setting.
- To finish, stop the stream from OBS and end the event in YouTube as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but verify the archive in YouTube. If you also record locally in OBS, check the local recording separately; it is not the same file or storage location as YouTube’s archive. YouTube recommends verifying local archive files when making one.
Copyright, reused content and other policy checks
Streaming a file as a live event does not make its music, footage or other material yours to use. Before broadcasting, confirm that you own the material or have permission covering the content and the way you plan to use it. YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies can apply to live streams as well as uploaded videos; review the current YouTube live-stream setup guidance and applicable YouTube policies before scheduling. Repeating a video also does not guarantee that a channel or stream will qualify for monetization: eligibility and policy decisions depend on YouTube’s rules and the content itself.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Incorrect stream URL or key, wrong encoder service, or the stream has not been started in OBS. | Copy the current URL and key from the intended Live Control Room event, verify OBS’s streaming settings, and start streaming again. Keep the key private. |
| The preview is missing or the event will not start | The encoder feed has not arrived yet, the wrong event is selected, or the channel is not enabled for live streaming. | Confirm the event and stream key match, wait for the preview, and check channel eligibility. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. |
| The video plays once and stops | The Media Source’s Loop option is off. | Open the source’s properties and enable Loop if continuous replay is intended. |
| Video appears but audio is absent | The file has no usable audio, its track is muted, or the OBS audio path is not reaching the stream. | Play the file locally, inspect OBS’s audio mixer and meters, and check the incoming preview before going live. |
| Stream is unstable or YouTube reports poor quality | Bitrate may exceed reliable upload capacity, or network variation is interrupting the feed. | Reduce output bitrate or resolution, use a stable connection, and test again against YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. |
| Playlist source is unavailable | OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. | Install VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS’s source list; alternatively, use a single Media Source file. |
| Local recording or archive cannot be found | YouTube archive and OBS local recording are separate outputs, and local recording may not have been started. | Check YouTube Studio for the archive and OBS’s recording settings/location for a local file. Do not assume one exists because the other does. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that stays live around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos without keeping your Mac mini or home connection running; it does not stream from a camera.
