What you need before you start
- OBS installed on a computer that can play the video smoothly.
- A local video file, or VLC installed if you want to loop a playlist.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube requires a verified channel with no livestreaming restriction in the previous 90 days; check your channel’s status in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s livestream eligibility guidance
- A stable upload connection that can sustain your chosen stream bitrate.
OBS runs the encoder on your computer, while YouTube supplies the stream destination and key. The steps below use the OBS and YouTube interfaces documented in their current help material; labels or placement may vary slightly by version.

Set up OBS to loop one video
- In OBS, create or select a scene for the broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, select + → Media Source, name the source, and choose Local File.
- Browse to the video and enable Loop. It is off by default, so verify the checkbox. The OBS Media Source can play common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. OBS Media Sources
- Check the preview. If the clip does not fill the canvas as intended, right-click the source and use Transform options to fit it. Make sure the canvas and output aspect ratio suit the video rather than stretching or cropping important content.
For multiple files, use OBS’s VLC Video source instead of adding each file as a separate looping Media Source. Install VLC in the architecture that matches OBS if VLC Video is missing, add the playlist files, and check Loop Playlist. OBS documents that this option is on by default; its visibility behavior is to stop playback when the source is hidden and restart it when visible. OBS Media Sources
Disable the microphone but keep the video’s audio
- Open Settings → Audio and disable the configured global Mic/Auxiliary Audio device if you do not want OBS to capture a microphone. OBS’s Quick Start Guide notes that microphone capture is enabled by default on new installations. OBS Quick Start Guide
- Look at the OBS Audio Mixer. Mute or remove the microphone input if it still appears. Keep the Media Source’s audio unmuted if the recording’s soundtrack should be heard.
- Play the video and watch the meters. The microphone meter should remain inactive, while the Media Source meter should move if the clip contains sound.
If you add an Audio Input Capture or Audio Output Capture source in a scene, avoid capturing the same device both there and globally in Settings → Audio; OBS warns this can cause echo. OBS Audio Sources

Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Use the Stream tab for an immediate encoder stream, or open Manage → Schedule stream if you want to create the event in advance. YouTube encoder instructions
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream and select YouTube if offered. Otherwise copy the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s Live Control Room into OBS’s server and key fields.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not share or publish it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the key in OBS.
- Set the event title, description, category, and privacy in YouTube. Choose public, private, or unlisted as appropriate, and check the setting before sharing the watch link. Manage live stream settings
- Click Start Streaming in OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait until the Live Control Room preview appears, confirm the feed, then select Go live in YouTube. When finished, end the broadcast in YouTube’s Live Control Room and stop OBS from sending the feed.
Choose encoder settings that match your connection
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. Its encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 frames per second, and a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds). YouTube detects resolution and frame rate automatically by default; manual selection is available with a custom stream key. YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into multiple output formats. For H.264, YouTube currently recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, with a stated minimum of 5 Mbps; for 720p at 30 fps, it recommends 4 Mbps, with a minimum of 3 Mbps. Its table lists 10 Mbps recommended for AV1/HEVC at 1080p30 and 6 Mbps at 720p30. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your upload connection can sustain them. Run a speed test and select a bitrate your connection can hold reliably; consult YouTube’s full table for other resolution, frame-rate, and codec combinations. YouTube encoder settings

Test before the broadcast
OBS recommends a test lasting a few minutes. Check the complete path, not just the OBS preview: confirm the video reaches YouTube, repeats after the end, the intended soundtrack is audible, and no microphone audio is sent. Listen to a private or unlisted test from another device if possible, and monitor YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and audio/video quality. OBS Quick Start Guide · YouTube live tips

For streams under 12 hours, YouTube says the broadcast is automatically archived. Its encoder instructions do not promise automatic archiving for streams lasting 12 hours or longer. If retaining a long loop matters, make a separate recording or plan shorter broadcasts. YouTube encoder instructions

Troubleshooting
- The video stops after one play: Edit the Media Source properties and turn on Loop. For a playlist, check Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source.
- The stream is silent: Check whether the file has an audio track, make sure the Media Source is not muted, and watch its meter during playback. Disabling Mic/Aux should not mute the clip’s own audio.
- The microphone is still audible: Check both Settings → Audio and the Audio Mixer for a global Mic/Aux device or a scene-level capture source. Mute or disable the actual input.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: Confirm OBS is streaming, the server URL and key match the current YouTube event, and the key has not been reset. For a scheduled event, wait for the preview and select Go live in YouTube.
- Playback stutters or YouTube reports poor quality: Reduce the output bitrate to a level your upload connection can sustain, then test again. Check that the computer plays the source smoothly and that the chosen resolution and frame rate match what it can encode.
- VLC Video is unavailable: Install VLC in the architecture compatible with your OBS installation, then restart OBS and check Sources again.
Copyright and channel considerations
Having a video file does not automatically grant permission to livestream it. Use material you created or have rights to stream, including music and other embedded audio. YouTube’s channel eligibility and livestream restrictions also apply to encoder broadcasts; verify these in YouTube Studio before scheduling. A technically successful test does not determine whether a particular video complies with copyright rules or YouTube policies.

Can I loop several videos instead of one?
Yes. Use OBS’s VLC Video source with a playlist and verify Loop Playlist is enabled.
Will YouTube archive a very long looping stream?
YouTube’s encoder instructions describe automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; they do not promise it at or above 12 hours.
