If an OBS VLC Video Source stops after its first playlist item, first check that VLC is installed with the same architecture as OBS, then open the exact playlist files directly in VLC. If the item that fails is a YouTube Live URL, test that URL directly in VLC too: URL playback can fail independently of OBS playlist sequencing. There is no verified universal fix for every version or playlist type, so identify which layer is failing before changing settings.
First identify what the playlist is trying to play
“Only the first video plays” can describe two different problems: a local playlist advances incorrectly, or a YouTube URL in the playlist will not play reliably. These need different checks. Note your operating system, OBS version, VLC version, playlist format, and whether the failing entry is a local file, a playlist file, or a YouTube URL.

- Local files: determine whether each file opens and plays in VLC on the same computer.
- YouTube URL: test the exact URL in VLC outside OBS. If it fails there too, the issue is not necessarily OBS’s playlist progression.
Check VLC and the local media first
- Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS. OBS’s VLC Video Source uses VLC libraries; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If you have changed either installation, restart OBS before testing again.
- Open each playlist entry directly in VLC. Test the actual files rather than assuming that because the first file works, every entry is valid. If an item will not open or play in VLC, resolve that media or path problem before troubleshooting OBS.
- Check the entries in the OBS VLC Video Source. Confirm that the intended items are present and point to the media you tested. Re-check any entry that has moved or whose location differs from the one opened in VLC.
- Test progression with a small local playlist. Use two known-good local files. This separates basic playlist progression from a problem tied to one particular file or remote URL.
Check the VLC Video Source playback options
In the VLC Video Source properties, inspect the playlist and playback controls. OBS documents Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist: looping restarts the list after it ends, while shuffle changes the order. Neither option makes an unsupported or inaccessible YouTube URL playable. If your goal is to see items in their listed order, turn shuffle off while testing; use loop only if you want the list to start again after its last item.

OBS also implements playlist next/previous hotkeys and network-caching settings. These controls can affect how you operate the source or how network media is buffered, but changing them is not a confirmed general fix for a source that stops after its first item. Make one change at a time and retest, so you can tell whether it helped.

If the playlist item is a YouTube Live URL
A YouTube watch URL and a local video file are not equivalent VLC inputs. First open the exact URL in VLC directly. A July 2023 forum participant reported that a YouTube URL failed both in OBS’s VLC Video Source and directly in VLC; after updating a YouTube Lua script, playback reportedly worked but buffered. That is one historical user report, not current official guidance or proof that updating a script will fix your case.
A January 2026 OBS forum participant reported partial success using a live HLS index.m3u8 manifest URL instead of an ordinary YouTube URL. The participant also said they did not know whether the manifest URL would remain stable. Treat this as an unverified, potentially temporary workaround—not a permanent or officially supported fix. Do not assume a copied manifest URL will continue working.
Consider a plugin only for local playlist management
OBS Media Playlist Source is an optional alternative to investigate if you need different controls for managing local media playlists. Check that its current requirements match your installed OBS version before installing it. The available information does not establish that this plugin fixes playback of remote YouTube Live URLs.
