To stream a prerecorded fireplace video on YouTube Live with FFmpeg, create an encoder-based live stream in YouTube Studio, copy its ingest URL and stream key, then run FFmpeg with real-time pacing so the file plays at normal speed rather than being sent as fast as possible. Check the feed in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview before starting the event, and monitor stream health while it runs.

Before you start

  • YouTube channel: Live streaming must be enabled. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • FFmpeg: Install a build on a computer that can access your video file and maintain an internet connection for the whole broadcast. The reviewed guidance does not establish hardware requirements for a particular video.
  • Rights: Make sure you own or have permission to use both the fireplace footage and any music, sound effects, or other audio. YouTube says live streams must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
  • Source details: Identify the video’s resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, and whether it has an audio track. Match the outgoing stream to a YouTube-supported configuration.

Create the YouTube live stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Choose an encoder-based stream. You can schedule it if you want a watch page in advance, or set up an immediate event.
  2. In the stream setup, copy the stream URL and stream key. The key is password-like: keep it private, do not put it in a public command, screenshot, or post, and reset it in YouTube if you expose it.
  3. Choose RTMP or RTMPS from the ingest options. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption. Its ordinary RTMP URL may be shown by default, so select or retrieve the RTMPS URL explicitly if you want the encrypted connection. Use the exact URL shown for your event; confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the selected secure URL. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and RTMPS guidance.

Choose output settings that fit the video

For standard RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, YouTube lists H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a keyframe interval of two seconds, no longer than four seconds. Use YouTube’s current bitrate table for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send; do not choose a bitrate based only on the source file’s size.

Your internet connection needs sustained upload capacity above the stream’s total video-and-audio bitrate. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend about 20% additional upload bandwidth above that total. A connection that only just meets the bitrate can leave too little room for fluctuations. Review YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance and YouTube’s streaming tips for current values.

There are two broad ways to prepare the outgoing media:

  • CanaKit USB-C PiSwitch (On/Off Power Switch for Raspberry Pi 4)
  • Re-encode: FFmpeg decodes the source and encodes it to settings that match YouTube’s guidance. This can help when the source codec, frame rate, or other properties do not suit the intended output, but encoding uses computer resources. The reviewed guidance does not specify hardware requirements.
  • Stream-copy: FFmpeg passes compatible encoded audio and video through without re-encoding. This avoids an encoding step, but it does not make an incompatible source compatible: the transmitted formats still need to meet YouTube’s ingest requirements.

Build and run the FFmpeg command

FFmpeg’s command-line options are positional: put input options before the input they apply to, and output options before the output destination. For a prerecorded file, use real-time pacing so FFmpeg feeds it like a live source. FFmpeg documents -re as a real-time input option and shows RTMP output with the FLV muxer. See the FFmpeg documentation.

This is a command structure, not a tested, ready-to-run command. Replace the input path and destination with your own values, and add the appropriate video and audio options for your source and chosen output settings:

ffmpeg -re -i "/path/to/fireplace.mp4" -f flv "<YouTube ingest URL>/<stream key>"

For example, the destination is assembled from the ingest URL and the private stream key supplied by Live Control Room. Do not publish the real key. If YouTube provides an RTMPS address, use that exact address rather than assuming the ordinary RTMP URL is secure.

A fireplace loop often needs to run longer than the source clip. FFmpeg’s loop options and their exact behavior should be checked in the documentation for the FFmpeg release installed on your computer before adding a looping option; the syntax is version-sensitive enough that it should not be copied without verification. Confirm that the file restarts as intended and that the live output remains continuous. YouTube’s archive guidance is not a promise that an encoder will restart or that a stream will stay connected indefinitely.

Vilros Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Basic Starter Kit with Fan-Cooled Heavy-Duty Aluminum Alloy Case
  • KEEP YOUR PROCESSOR COOL: The busier a processor gets the more it heats up, leading to sub-optimal performance. To prevent this common issue, this kit includes an aluminum alloy case with a pre-installed fan. The aluminum alloy actively draws the heat from the pi board, while the fan further cools the board and case. These cooling mechanisms will help push the limits of your processor and increase its flexibility.
  • SIZABLE RAM: This Raspberry Pi 4 comes equipped with 4GB of RAM, which is the same amount of RAM or more RAM than many mainstream laptops contain. With 4GB of RAM, your processor will be capable of running retro gaming setups and common computer applications, media players, and much more!
  • SIMPLE TO TURN ON & OFF: This kit includes a USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 compatible power supply with an easy-to-use on/off switch that was designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 4 model to streamline processing.
  • IMPROVEMENTS FROM PREVIOUS MODELS: This latest model of the Raspberry Pi 4 offers groundbreaking increases in processor speed, multimedia performance, connectivity, memory, and more! The desktop performance of this model is comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems.
  • VERSATILE USE: The Raspberry Pi may have a small processor, but it is a highly adaptable little computer that can replace your desktop PC. Its functions range from practical to nostalgic since it can power an ad-blocking server as easily as it can power an outmoded gaming setup. Other uses include but are not limited to printing from non-wireless printers, playing media, making time-lapse videos, and building multiplayer network game servers and motion-capture security systems.

Preview, start, and monitor the event

  1. Start the FFmpeg process and leave the terminal or process supervisor running. Watch its output for connection errors or encoding failures.
  2. Wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room. Check the preview for the fireplace image, correct framing, and audible sound if the file contains audio.
  3. Start or confirm the event in Live Control Room when the preview is correct. For a scheduled event, follow the on-screen start controls for that event.
  4. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators and the FFmpeg process during the broadcast. A successful initial connection does not establish that the stream will stay healthy for its full duration.
  5. When finished, end the event in YouTube and stop FFmpeg from sending the feed.

YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive rule does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming, continuous looping, or availability of an archive for every possible circumstance. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No incoming stream appears The ingest URL or key is wrong, the event is not set up for an encoder, or the channel is not enabled for live streaming. Copy the current URL and key from the correct Live Control Room event, check channel eligibility, and confirm the FFmpeg output destination uses the intended RTMP or RTMPS address.
FFmpeg connects but YouTube reports an unhealthy stream The outgoing codec, bitrate, frame rate, or keyframe interval may not match YouTube’s guidance, or upload capacity may be insufficient. Compare the actual output settings with YouTube’s current encoder recommendations and leave the recommended upload headroom.
Video plays too quickly or the feed ends immediately The file is being sent without real-time pacing, or the loop behavior is not configured as intended. Use the documented real-time input option for file playback. Verify the installed FFmpeg version’s loop options and observe a full file boundary before relying on a long broadcast.
Picture is present but audio is missing The source may have no audio track, or the output audio settings may not be supported or correctly mapped. Inspect the source’s audio track and verify the outgoing audio codec and mapping. If silence is intentional, confirm that the preview is otherwise correct.
The broadcast drops during operation Network instability, a local process stop, or a machine sleep or shutdown can interrupt a locally encoded stream. Check the connection and FFmpeg process, prevent the computer from sleeping, and reconnect or restart the feed using Live Control Room’s current controls. Do not treat automatic archive behavior as recovery.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a computer and home connection to stay on for the broadcast, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos in the cloud. The setup is three steps: upload the fireplace recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It does not stream from a camera.
