Yes. One MP4 can supply the repeated audio and video for a 24/7 YouTube Live stream, but the file alone does not broadcast. An encoder such as OBS must play the MP4 on a loop and send the live feed to YouTube; the computer, power and internet connection running that encoder must remain available. You can instead use a cloud playout service to keep the video running without leaving a home computer on.
How one MP4 becomes a live stream
The MP4 is the program source: it contains the sleep sounds and any accompanying visuals. Encoder software plays that source repeatedly and transmits the resulting live video to YouTube. OBS Studio supports MP4 files as Media Sources and offers a Loop setting that restarts playback when the file ends. YouTube supports encoder-based live streams. Looping solves what happens when the file reaches its end. It does not, by itself, keep a live broadcast connected: the encoder and its connection still have to operate.
Set up a one-file loop with OBS and YouTube
- Check live-stream eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance before the day you plan to start.
- Add the MP4 in OBS. Create or select a scene, add a Media Source, choose the MP4, and enable Loop. OBS lists MP4 among supported video types. Play the file through its end and into the next loop before broadcasting; listen for a gap, click, abrupt volume change or silence at the transition. This is a production check to perform on your own file, not a guarantee that every MP4 will loop seamlessly. OBS Media Sources
- Create the YouTube broadcast and connect OBS. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or event and copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. YouTube’s labels can change; use its current live-stream settings guidance for the applicable workflow. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission. Encoder settings
- Configure the outgoing stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Set resolution, frame rate and bitrate to a combination your encoder and upload connection can sustain, and follow YouTube’s current recommendations for the selected output. These settings describe the stream OBS sends—not necessarily the codec inside your MP4, since the encoder generates the outgoing feed. Test before going live and watch stream health. - Keep the broadcast chain running. For local OBS playout, leave the computer on and prevent sleep or shutdown, keep OBS open, and maintain power and internet access. A computer restart, network outage or software failure can stop the feed. YouTube advises creators to test and monitor the stream; its encoder help also identifies cloud-based prerecorded-video playout as an available category. Plan for the 12-hour archive and DVR limits
Do not assume YouTube will preserve a replay of a continuous 24-hour broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. If you need a replay, make and verify a local recording. Another option is to end and restart separate broadcasts comfortably before the 12-hour threshold, but that interrupts the continuous stream and may produce multiple live entries. Viewers may also have limited or no DVR rewind on streams longer than 12 hours. Do not promise that someone joining late can rewind through the entire broadcast, or rely on pausing and resuming to cover the full duration. YouTube DVR guidance
Use sleep audio and visuals you have the rights to stream
Make sure you have the rights needed for the live broadcast and any resulting archive for every sound and visual in the MP4. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content; a stream can be interrupted or terminated if matched content remains after a warning. If you have licensed third-party material, YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist, or the live stream can still be interrupted. YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the provider to have the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of live content, including applicable music rights. Check that an audio license covers live streaming, the territories where the content can be viewed, and archive or replay use. Being able to play a track in your MP4 does not establish those permissions. YouTube live-stream terms
Troubleshoot the common failure points
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The MP4 stops after one play. | Loop is not enabled on the OBS Media Source. | Open the source properties, enable Loop, then let the file reach its end and confirm playback starts again. OBS Media Sources |
| The broadcast never starts or cannot connect. | Channel eligibility, stream URL or key, or encoder settings may be wrong. | Check YouTube live eligibility, confirm the current event’s URL and key were entered in OBS, and compare the output configuration with YouTube’s encoder guidance. Do not share the key publicly. Eligibility guidance · Stream settings |
| Playback becomes unstable or drops. | The computer, encoder, power or upload connection may not be sustaining the output. | Test the stream before relying on it, monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators, and choose output settings your connection can maintain. A local outage or restart can end the feed. YouTube live-streaming tips |
| There is a gap, click or silence at the loop point. | The MP4’s beginning and ending audio may not join cleanly, or playback may introduce a transition. | Listen to repeated transitions in OBS before going live; edit or replace the source if the join is audible. |
| The broadcast is live but a replay is missing or rewind is limited. | The stream ran longer than 12 hours. | Use a verified local recording if the replay matters. YouTube warns that a stream over 12 hours may not be captured, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable beyond that duration. Archive guidance · DVR guidance |
| YouTube interrupts the live stream over content matching. | Audio or visuals may match third-party material, or a license may not be reflected in Content ID. | Use material cleared for the live stream and archive. If it is licensed third-party content, ask the rights owner about allowlisting the channel. YouTube copyright guidance |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a computer and home connection running around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload the MP4, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud. It is the first option to consider when comparing ways to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running: it runs without a home computer, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and includes a first day free.
