Run FFmpeg on a Linux VPS, send the archive to YouTube over RTMPS, and let a systemd service supervise the encoder. The VPS can keep the media feed running without a home computer, but systemd only restarts the local process: you must also verify that YouTube’s broadcast has returned to a live state after a disconnect.
How the pieces fit together
There are two separate parts to a YouTube Live stream: the viewer-facing broadcast and the incoming media feed. YouTube represents these as a liveBroadcast and a liveStream. A broadcast is associated with one stream; a stream can be reused for recurring broadcasts. FFmpeg reads and paces your archive, then sends it to YouTube’s ingest address with the stream key. systemd runs FFmpeg as a service and can restart it if the process exits. Google explains the broadcast and stream model.

This guide covers a feed sent to a YouTube Live broadcast, not a camera stream. You can associate incoming media with a scheduled event, or use your channel’s available live-stream workflow in YouTube Studio. API-created scheduled events have their own required broadcast details, including a title, scheduled start time, and privacy status; available options can depend on channel permissions and current restrictions. See the LiveBroadcasts insert reference.
For a continuous channel-style feed, decide what should happen when an episode ends: stop the event, repeat the same recording, or move to another episode. These are different playback and broadcast-lifecycle choices, not interchangeable FFmpeg flags.

Before you configure the VPS
- Confirm channel eligibility. Make sure livestreaming is enabled for the YouTube channel and that you can create or use the intended broadcast.
- Clear the rights. You need permission to rebroadcast each episode and any included music, clips, artwork, or other material. Having a copy of a file does not establish those rights.
- Choose a readable archive. Keep the source files in a location the service account can read. For multiple episodes, define their order and what should happen at each transition.
- Check the VPS. The machine needs sustained network access and enough CPU for the chosen encoding method. A stream-copy workflow uses less encoding work than transcoding, but only works when the source media is suitable for the selected ingest profile.
- Install FFmpeg and systemd. Package names and systemd behavior vary by Linux distribution and version. Confirm the installed FFmpeg build and validate unit syntax on the target VPS.
YouTube’s API exposes ingestion addresses and stream names, as well as stream status and health information. Use the current primary RTMPS address and key shown for your stream in YouTube Studio or obtained through the API; do not reuse a sample address or key from an old guide. See the LiveStreams API reference.
Create the YouTube broadcast and get its ingest details
- In YouTube Studio, enable livestreaming if the channel has not used it before. Check the channel’s current eligibility and any activation or feature restrictions shown there.
- Create the live broadcast or select the intended channel live-stream workflow. Set its title, visibility, and schedule as appropriate. For an API-created event, provide the required title, scheduled start time, and privacy status.
- Open the stream’s ingest details and copy the current primary RTMPS server address and stream key. A stream key is a credential: do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, support post, or shared unit file.
- Keep the broadcast page available for the later test. FFmpeg sending data successfully does not by itself prove that the intended broadcast is receiving it or that YouTube considers it healthy.
RTMPS is RTMP carried over SSL. Google’s ingest guidance documents using the rtmps protocol, a valid YouTube ingest server and path, and port 443. Use the endpoint YouTube currently provides for your stream. Read Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
Choose how the archive should play
One recording, played once
Use this when one episode or compilation should run through a single event and then finish. Do not enable repeat behavior. When the file reaches its end, FFmpeg exits; systemd may then restart it, so configure the service only after deciding whether an ended event should actually be started again.
One recording, repeated continuously
FFmpeg supports input looping. A basic starting point for repeating one local file and sending its existing audio and video streams is:
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i /srv/podcast/archive.mp4 -c copy -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_CURRENT_YOUTUBE_INGEST_ADDRESS/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
Replace the endpoint and key with the current values from YouTube, and test with your installed FFmpeg version. -stream_loop -1 repeats the input; -re reads it at approximately real-time pace rather than sending the file as fast as the VPS can process it. -c copy passes the existing encoded streams through without re-encoding. It is appropriate only if the source’s streams and container are compatible with the chosen YouTube ingest setup. FFmpeg documents real-time file-to-RTMP output and input-loop options in its protocol documentation and command-line documentation.
Looping the same file can repeat its opening and ending abruptly. If that is not acceptable, prepare a continuous source or use a playback plan that handles transitions deliberately; do not assume the loop option creates a seamless edit.

Multiple episodes in sequence
A folder of episode files is not automatically a robust playlist. Choose an explicit playlist or orchestration method, verify that the order is deterministic, and decide what happens between files. For each transition, determine whether the feed should pause, continue into the next episode, or end one broadcast and start another. Check that audio and video streams remain consistent enough for the chosen method. A single-file loop command does not implement playlist sequencing or recover a failed transition.
Audio-only episodes
YouTube Live expects a video stream as well as audio for the video broadcast workflow. If an episode has audio only, provide a visual track such as a static or animated slate, then verify in YouTube’s stream-health view that both expected media streams arrive. The appropriate visual treatment and encoding profile depend on your source and chosen setup.
Match FFmpeg to the source media
Inspect the archive’s actual codecs, dimensions, frame rate, and audio streams before choosing copy or transcode. If the existing streams are accepted by the selected YouTube ingest configuration, stream-copy avoids the CPU cost of encoding. If they are unsuitable, transcode to a format compatible with the current YouTube guidance and your selected output settings.
Do not treat a bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codec, or keyframe interval from an old example as universally correct. The material available here does not establish exact current values for every profile. Check YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send, then monitor the stream-health information in Studio. YouTube’s LiveStreams resource documents health and configuration status, including problems such as missing audio or mismatches: LiveStreams API reference.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen transcoding is necessary, replace -c copy with explicit encoder and output settings chosen for that profile. Test those settings against the installed FFmpeg version and actual source files before relying on unattended operation. A command that works for one archive may fail on another because of different codecs, dimensions, timestamps, or audio layout.
Keep the stream key out of public files
The simplest command places the stream key in FFmpeg’s destination URL. That is convenient for a manual test, but command arguments and service configuration can be visible to privileged users and may be copied into logs or diagnostic output. Treat access to the VPS and service files accordingly.

- Use a dedicated, unprivileged Linux account for the streaming service and grant it read access only to the required archive and configuration.
- Keep any file containing the stream key out of source control and restrict its filesystem permissions to the minimum needed by the service.
- Avoid pasting a real key into shell history, screenshots, tickets, or public logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio.
- Do not assume that an environment variable makes a secret invisible to privileged users or every diagnostic tool. Validate the chosen secret-handling approach for the VPS distribution and service setup.
Run FFmpeg under systemd
Use a foreground FFmpeg process as the service’s main process. The following is an illustrative unit, not a distribution-independent, security-tested template. Replace paths, user, group, and command for your setup; validate the syntax and secret handling against the installed systemd version.
[Unit]
Description=Podcast archive to YouTube Live
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=podcast-live
Group=podcast-live

Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
In a real service, do not leave a live key in a unit that is readable more widely than necessary. Put the command and secret-handling approach under restricted access, and verify whether your selected mechanism expands values as you expect: systemd does not automatically interpret every shell feature inside ExecStart. The exact directives and handling vary with the systemd version and distribution.
- Save the unit in the appropriate system service directory for your distribution, for example
/etc/systemd/system/podcast-live.service, with permissions suitable for a root-managed unit. - Ask systemd to load the unit and check it for errors using your distribution’s normal unit-validation workflow.
- Enable and start the service only when the YouTube event is ready to receive the feed. Check service status and logs, then inspect the broadcast’s stream health in YouTube Studio.
- For a planned stop, stop the service cleanly and then check the YouTube event. Do not leave a restart policy active if the desired outcome is for the stream to remain stopped after the episode ends.
A restart policy supervises the local FFmpeg process; it does not guarantee that a reconnect is accepted by YouTube or attached to the intended event. YouTube’s Life of a Broadcast guide describes broadcast lifecycle and testing. Use it alongside service logs rather than treating a running systemd unit as proof that viewers can see the feed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test before making it unattended
- Start with a private or unlisted event where those options are available, and use a short representative file or a planned test window.
- Start FFmpeg and confirm that the service remains active. Read its logs for input, connection, and encoding errors.
- Check YouTube Studio’s stream-health information. Confirm that the broadcast is receiving the expected audio and video and that no configuration issue is reported.
- Test the intended end-of-file behavior: one-time playback should finish; repeat-one should restart the source; a playlist should move to the next episode as planned.
- During a controlled maintenance test, interrupt the service or network and observe both layers: whether systemd restarts FFmpeg and whether the YouTube broadcast returns to the intended live state.
- Only after those behaviors are understood should you enable the service to start at boot and treat it as an unattended operation.
Troubleshoot common failures
FFmpeg exits immediately
Inspect the service logs for a bad file path, unreadable media, unsupported input, invalid output URL, or missing FFmpeg executable. Confirm that the service account—not just your login account—can read the archive and any restricted configuration files.
YouTube does not show an incoming feed
Check that you used the current RTMPS server address and matching stream key, that the destination path is intact, and that outbound access to the documented RTMPS port is allowed. Confirm that the broadcast is the one associated with the stream whose ingest details you used.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The service is active, but the broadcast is not live
Systemd may report an active FFmpeg process even when YouTube has not accepted or associated the reconnect as intended. Inspect both FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s stream/broadcast status. Restarting the process is not a substitute for confirming the event lifecycle.

Stream health reports missing media or a mismatch
Check the source’s actual audio and video streams and compare the output with the current YouTube guidance for the selected profile. An audio-only source needs a video track for this workflow; a copied stream may not fit the destination requirements. Adjust or transcode, then test again.
Episodes do not advance as expected
A single-file loop repeats one input; it does not manage a collection of episodes. Check the playlist mechanism, file ordering, transition behavior, and end-of-file handling separately. Decide whether a transition should keep the same broadcast alive or start a new event.
The feed stops after a reboot or network interruption
Confirm that the unit is enabled for boot, that network availability and dependencies are appropriate for the VPS, and that the service logs show a successful FFmpeg restart. Then verify the YouTube event itself. A VPS reboot, lost source file, exhausted resources, or rejected reconnect can still prevent the viewer-facing stream from recovering.
