YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live streams. The playlist itself is not sent to YouTube as a playlist: the encoder reads the media and transmits a continuous live signal.
What you need before you start
- An Azure VM with an encoder installed and enough compute capacity for the chosen video settings. No VM size has been benchmarked here, so test the actual workload rather than relying on a presumed size.
- The playlist and its media files stored on, or mounted so the encoder can read them from, the VM.
- A YouTube live stream configured in Live Control Room, where you can retrieve its current ingest server URL and stream key.
- Working outbound network access from the VM to YouTube’s public ingest endpoint. Azure deployment defaults can make this a configuration item rather than an assumption.
Prepare the playlist and media
Place the media where the encoder process can access it, then verify the intended order and each file’s duration. Decide what should happen when the final item ends: stop, restart the playlist, or continue with another item. Also check how transitions and audio levels should behave. YouTube receives the encoder’s live output, not a playlist file, so playlist parsing and looping are handled on the VM.

The exact playlist format and encoder command depend on the software you choose. The official YouTube and Azure guidance linked below does not validate a particular FFmpeg playlist command, so treat any command you develop as an implementation example and test it with your own files before scheduling a public broadcast.
Create the YouTube live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the current ingest server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use those exact values in the encoder; do not assume an endpoint or key from an old configuration is still valid.
- Store the key as a secret available to the encoder, rather than embedding it in a public script, source repository, or logs. Anyone who obtains the key may be able to send content to that stream.
YouTube’s RTMPS guidance requires the rtmps scheme, a valid YouTube RTMPS server and Live application path, and a connection over port 443; media is sent as RTMP over SSL. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guidance and copy the current connection details from Live Control Room.

Confirm Azure outbound connectivity
The VM must be able to initiate a connection to YouTube’s public ingest service. Check the subnet’s outbound configuration, network security group rules, firewall policy, and any network virtual appliance routes before troubleshooting the encoder.
Microsoft documents an important rollout: for API versions released after March 31, 2026, subnets in newly created Azure virtual networks default to defaultOutboundAccess=false. Existing virtual networks are not automatically changed by this rollout. If your VM has no permitted egress path, configure one explicitly. Microsoft’s documented choices include NAT Gateway, load-balancer outbound rules, a VM public IP, or a firewall/network virtual appliance route; select according to your network’s security and operations requirements. Configure the encoder
Set the encoder to read the playlist and send its output to the RTMPS endpoint and stream key from Live Control Room. Choose the video bitrate and resolution using the current YouTube recommendations, the source material, the VM’s encoding capacity, and available network egress. Do not treat any single bitrate as universal: the appropriate value depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, and the current YouTube guidance.

For conventional SDR, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. Use constant bitrate (CBR), and configure a keyframe interval of two seconds where possible; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Its current compatibility and bitrate recommendations are available in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Recheck that page when configuring a stream, because supported settings and recommended rates may change.

Choose the ingest protocol
RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended choice for ordinary live content. It carries RTMP over an SSL connection to port 443. YouTube also documents HLS for some encoder scenarios, but the workflow here uses RTMPS; choose another protocol only if your encoder and the current YouTube guidance support it and its latency characteristics suit the broadcast.
Start, preview, and monitor the broadcast
- Start the playlist encoder on the VM with the selected media, output settings, RTMPS URL, and protected stream key.
- Open the stream’s Live Control Room preview. Confirm that video arrives, audio is audible, and the playlist is advancing as intended before making the stream public.
- Watch the encoder status and network connection for dropped output, and monitor the playlist process for an ended file, parsing error, or unexpected stop.
- After the broadcast is stable, confirm the stream’s visibility and audience settings in YouTube before sharing it.
The ingest and networking requirements do not, by themselves, provide a process supervisor, restart policy, or playlist recovery design. If continuous operation matters, decide how the VM will detect an encoder or playlist failure and how an operator will be alerted; test that recovery behavior instead of assuming the stream restarts automatically.

Troubleshooting common failures

Keep the content eligible for a YouTube live stream
Technical connectivity does not grant rights to the material. Use video and audio you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check the applicable YouTube policies before streaming. A playlist of prerecorded material is still being delivered as a live broadcast; the encoder does not make copyrighted or otherwise restricted content permissible. Review YouTube’s current live streaming restrictions and YouTube channel monetization policies, including their treatment of reused content if monetization is relevant.
