To stream a prerecorded video repeatedly from an Ubuntu server, run FFmpeg with the video as a real-time input, loop it, and send the output to the RTMPS URL and stream key for your YouTube broadcast. You need an always-on server, a video file the process can read, an FFmpeg build with the required codec and RTMPS support, and a stream configured in YouTube Live Control Room. The command below is an illustrative, untested template: adapt it to your file, frame rate and chosen YouTube settings.
What you need before you start
- An Ubuntu server that stays on. FFmpeg runs on that host, so if it shuts down or loses its network connection, the locally generated stream stops. The available sources do not establish a particular server size or hosting plan.
- A video file accessible to the server. Confirm its path and whether it contains audio and video.
- FFmpeg with suitable support. The build needs the encoder you intend to use and RTMPS protocol support. Installation commands and minimum versions vary by Ubuntu release and were not verified here; check the FFmpeg build available for your system.
- A YouTube Live stream endpoint and key. Get both from the stream’s settings in YouTube Live Control Room, not from an unrelated example.
- Enough sustained outbound bandwidth. Your server’s upload path must support the selected video and audio bitrates with practical headroom.
Configure the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or open the broadcast you intend to use.
- In the stream settings, copy the RTMPS URL and stream key. Use the current values shown there; do not assume a URL pattern from another streaming service applies. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL and recommends it as a secure way to stream.
- Keep the stream key secret. Do not expose it in screenshots, public repositories, shell history or logs. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Choose a codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate as a group. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum recommended interval of four seconds.
Choose encoder settings that fit your video and connection
YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution and frame rate. For H.264, the published examples include 5 Mbps at 720p30, 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 14 Mbps at 1080p60. These are configuration recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular server or network can sustain the stream; consult YouTube’s current encoder table for the exact combination you plan to use. Its guidance also lists H.265 and AV1, and supports frame rates up to 60 fps.

For stereo audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported, recommends 128 Kbps and specifies 44.1 kHz. Make sure the input actually contains the audio you expect and that your FFmpeg build can encode the chosen format. If the source has no audio, test the preview rather than assuming an audio track will be present.

Prepare the file and run FFmpeg
- Put the video on the server and identify its exact path. Confirm that the user running FFmpeg can read it and that there is enough local storage for the file.
- Check the input’s video and audio streams with a media-inspection tool available on your system, or use FFmpeg’s own input information when you run a test. Confirm the intended resolution, frame rate and presence of audio before choosing output settings.
- Replace the path, RTMPS endpoint and stream key in this template. Change the bitrate and GOP for your chosen frame rate and YouTube’s current recommendations. Do not paste a real key into a public script or repository.
Illustrative, untested template:

-f flv "RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY"This is not a guaranteed command for every Ubuntu FFmpeg build or input. The real-time file-input and FLV-to-RTMP output pattern is documented by FFmpeg, while the -stream_loop -1 pattern appears in an AWS example whose endpoint and service-specific arguments are for AWS IVS—not YouTube. Use the RTMPS URL format displayed in YouTube Live Control Room and do not copy AWS’s /app/ URL pattern.
The example uses H.264 video and AAC audio. Its 4,500 Kbps video bitrate is only a sample value, not a recommendation for every resolution or frame rate. The bitrate, maximum rate and buffer settings should reflect the selected YouTube configuration. The -re option makes file input proceed in real time; -stream_loop -1 requests continuous looping. The quoted endpoint placeholder must be replaced with the correct YouTube URL and key in the format required by the endpoint shown in Live Control Room.

Test the stream before relying on it
- Start FFmpeg and open the broadcast preview in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Check that both picture and audio are present. Test representative motion and sound from the recording, not only a static opening frame.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and any messages it reports. If the health is poor, compare the actual codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate with YouTube’s current recommendations, and check whether the server’s upload path can sustain the output.
- Let the test run long enough to observe the loop and confirm that the file repeats as expected before depending on it for an unattended broadcast.
Troubleshoot common problems
FFmpeg cannot connect
Check that you copied the current endpoint and key from the intended stream’s settings, and that the URL uses rtmps rather than rtmp. Re-copy the values if needed. Keep the key private while checking configuration.
YouTube reports poor stream health
Compare your selected codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Then test the server’s outbound capacity; a connection that only matches the video bitrate leaves no practical headroom for variation.

The preview has no audio
Verify that the input file contains an audio stream and that the FFmpeg command selects an audio encoder supported by the build. Check the YouTube preview with representative parts of the recording; the correct audio setup depends on the actual file.
The stream stops when you leave the server
The FFmpeg process needs the server to remain on and connected. This method does not, by itself, establish automatic recovery if YouTube drops the connection. Continuous duration limits, reconnect behavior and hosting-provider data-transfer charges are not established here, so verify those details for your broadcast and host rather than assuming uninterrupted operation.
