The right command depends on your file’s streams, your installed FFmpeg build, the event’s settings and your upload capacity, so inspect and test the source before broadcasting.
What you need before you start
- A finished local video file with the breathwork session’s picture and, if needed, audio.
- FFmpeg installed with the input and output support your file and chosen YouTube ingest protocol require. Check the documentation for your installed build; options and behavior can depend on its version.
- A YouTube channel able to create a live event, plus the current ingest details shown for that event in YouTube Live Control Room.
- A stable upload connection with enough capacity for the stream. YouTube recommends running a speed test and choosing settings your connection can sustain reliably.
- A way to monitor both FFmpeg and the event’s stream-health status while live.
FFmpeg can repeatedly read a file, but looping the input does not itself guarantee an uninterrupted connection or a continuously available YouTube broadcast.

Create the YouTube Live event and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the event you intend to use.
- Copy that event’s current ingestion endpoint and stream key from the live setup. Use the details shown for the event rather than assuming an endpoint or key from an older broadcast still applies.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, put it in screenshots, commit it to a source repository or share it in a command example. Avoid leaving it in shell history or a shared script.
If you choose RTMPS, YouTube’s guide specifies the rtmps protocol, a valid YouTube server and path, and port 443. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL and a suitable choice for ordinary user content, particularly when lower latency is desired. Follow the current event details and YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guidance for the server, path and connection format.
Choose resolution, frame rate and bitrate
YouTube detects the encoder’s resolution and frame rate by default in Live Control Room, and transcodes a live input into multiple output formats. Match the FFmpeg output to the source, event and upload connection rather than selecting a bitrate in isolation. The following are YouTube’s H.264 recommended video bitrates in its encoder guidance, accessed in 2026; each figure applies only to the stated resolution and frame rate.

These are not universal targets for every stream or codec. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings for the chosen ingest codec, resolution and frame rate before configuring FFmpeg. Leave enough headroom for a reliable connection instead of pushing the upload link to its limit.
For compatibility, YouTube’s Live API health definitions identify H.264 as supported video and AAC or MP3 as supported audio. They can flag unsupported codecs, audio sample-rate or bitrate issues, missing or extra audio/video streams, and keyframe intervals longer than four seconds. Use the health messages for diagnosis and check current Live Control Room guidance if its requirements or interface differ.

Inspect the source and build the FFmpeg command
There is no safe one-size-fits-all command: source streams, codecs, frame rate, FFmpeg build and event settings vary. First inspect the file’s duration, video and audio streams, codecs, resolution, frame rate and audio sample rate. The official FFmpeg command-line documentation and full options reference are the authority for options available in your installed version.

A typical command structure for a known local source is to apply the input-loop option to that file, map its video and audio streams, configure compatible output codecs and settings, and send the result in FLV format to the event’s current ingest endpoint. Treat this as a structure to adapt, not a production-ready command: verify loop-option spelling and placement in your installed version, confirm the file’s actual streams and codec compatibility, and test with that exact file and build.

Enter the real endpoint and key only in your local environment. Do not publish a command containing a live key or store it in a shared script. If you use a script or environment variable to keep credentials out of the command text, make sure it is private and that logs do not expose the value.
Test the complete session before going live
- Start a test with representative movement and audio from the session. YouTube recommends testing with content similar to what you will broadcast.
- Confirm that the event receives the signal and that the image has the intended resolution and aspect ratio.
- Listen for audible, synchronized audio. Check that the selected audio stream and settings match the source.
- Read the event’s stream-health messages and address codec, bitrate, audio, resolution or keyframe warnings before the real session.
- Monitor FFmpeg’s output and YouTube stream health during the broadcast. A running FFmpeg process is not proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
Troubleshoot common problems

Keep the breathwork guidance safe and modest
Technical delivery does not establish that a breathwork session treats or prevents a medical condition. NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s Nervous System Regulation page, last updated 20 July 2026, advises taking a comfortable position, not forcing or straining the breath, choosing a comfortable rate, and taking a break or stopping if dizzy or lightheaded. It also notes that the exercises are general and people should choose what works for them.
