You can generate a moving test pattern inside FFmpeg and send it straight to YouTube Live—no video file, camera, or capture card required. The key is to pace the generated input in real time, use the ingest URL and stream key from your current YouTube live setup, and choose encoder settings that match YouTube’s current guidance for your codec, resolution, and frame rate.
What the command does
FFmpeg’s lavfi input can create video synthetically. The testsrc source generates a changing pattern; -re paces that input in real time instead of letting FFmpeg produce frames as fast as your computer can render them. A second lavfi input below creates silent stereo audio, which can be useful when the chosen stream configuration expects an audio stream.

The example sends H.264 video and AAC audio in an FLV container to an RTMPS YouTube ingest endpoint. Its resolution, frame rate, bitrate, GOP, and other values are a starting configuration, not universal YouTube requirements. Confirm the appropriate settings for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance, and use the ingest URL configured for your broadcast.
Prepare the YouTube live setup
- Create or select a live broadcast. In YouTube’s live setup, obtain the active ingest URL and stream key. YouTube models ingest configuration separately from the broadcast itself; the stream must be connected to the correct broadcast. See the YouTube Live Streams API resource for the documented ingest-stream model.
- Choose output dimensions and frame rate. Decide what the test is intended to verify, then select resolution and frame rate accordingly. Use the current YouTube encoder guidance for the bitrate range associated with those settings rather than assuming one bitrate works for every stream.
- Prefer RTMPS when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Use the endpoint provided for the active setup and supported workflow; do not assume the example endpoint is the one assigned to your broadcast. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guidance.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a publishing credential. Do not put it in a public script, log, screenshot, or support post.
Run FFmpeg without a source video file
Replace STREAM_KEY with the key from the active YouTube Live setup. Replace the example destination with the current ingest URL if YouTube provides a different one. The command is illustrative and has not been tested against every FFmpeg build.

Check the stream and diagnose problems
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show an incoming stream | Whether the broadcast is ready or live, whether the endpoint and key match that broadcast, and FFmpeg’s connection messages. | Correct the active broadcast/ingest pairing and reconnect. YouTube documents broadcast and ingest-stream configuration as distinct resources: Live Streams API. |
| FFmpeg reports an unknown source, encoder, or protocol | The installed FFmpeg build may not include the requested component. | Check the capabilities and documentation for that exact build; behavior cannot be assumed for every third-party binary. See the FFmpeg documentation. |
| The stream connects but does not behave as expected | Whether output frames continue, and whether codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and endpoint align with the broadcast configuration. | Review FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s current encoder settings for the selected combination: YouTube encoder settings. |
| The stream key may have been exposed | Whether it appeared in any public script, log, screenshot, or support post. | Keep the key private and replace or reset it through YouTube’s live setup if it has been disclosed. |
Copyright and YouTube policy considerations
A generated test pattern avoids the need for source footage, but it does not exempt a broadcast from YouTube’s rules. Keep the test visuals and any audio you add lawful and appropriate for your channel, and review YouTube’s applicable live-stream and copyright requirements before broadcasting. Silent audio in the example does not grant rights to add music or other protected material.

If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than testing FFmpeg itself, StreamNeo is a different workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home; it loops in the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
