How to Compare Chromium Screenshots for Visual Regression Testing

Use Playwright Test to compare Chromium screenshots against reviewed baselines, with practical guidance for stable captures, diffs, and safe snapshot updates.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an app rendered in Chromium, the practical route is Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot(): capture a reviewed baseline, then compare future runs against it in the same configured environment. Stabilize the page and review each diff before updating the reference. For Chrome’s own desktop interface, use Chromium’s Pixel Tests instead; they compare screenshots with approved images through Skia Gold.

Choose the comparison workflow that matches what you are testing

What you are testing Use How comparison and review work
Your web application in Chromium Playwright Test screenshot assertions Playwright creates a reference image on the first run and compares later captures to it. You manage the test and snapshots in your project.
Chrome browser UI maintained by the Chromium project Chromium Pixel Tests Pixel Tests compare screenshots with approved images through Skia Gold. The Chromium guide prefers Kombucha Screenshot and ScreenshotSurface verbs for new tests.
Hosted visual review, or broader browser and responsive coverage Consider a hosted visual-testing workflow if its review and rendering coverage fits your team Percy documents visual comparisons, review, and Playwright integration; Chromatic documents a Playwright integration that uploads page archives for cloud snapshots and pixel diffing. Neither is necessary for Playwright’s built-in assertion.

For an application page, the following setup uses Playwright’s built-in assertion. Browser rendering can vary with the host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors, so generate and compare snapshots in a consistent environment. Write a visual test

Create a test such as tests/visual.spec.ts:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('page visual appearance', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.test');
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});

Replace https://example.test with the page under test. On the first run, Playwright writes a reference screenshot. Subsequent runs capture the page and compare it with that reference. The assertion waits until two consecutive screenshots match before comparing the last capture with the expectation.

Create and review the baseline

  1. Run the test in the same OS or container image, browser version, viewport, and rendering configuration that CI will use.
  2. On the initial run, inspect the generated reference image to confirm it represents the intended UI state.
  3. Commit the approved snapshot alongside the test so changes can be reviewed in version control.
  4. Run the test again to confirm it passes against the saved reference.

Snapshot paths and names are managed by Playwright Test. If you intentionally test multiple operating systems, keep separate platform-specific snapshots rather than treating expected platform rendering differences as application regressions.

Make captures deterministic before tuning the diff

Control application state and timing

  • Use fixed data and a repeatable test account or fixture. Avoid relying on content that changes between runs.
  • Set a consistent viewport and wait for the page state you actually intend to test, such as a loaded component or completed navigation.
  • Playwright’s screenshot assertion disables animations by default and hides the caret by default. For remaining movement or delayed content, wait for a stable state rather than immediately capturing.
  • Mask or hide timestamps, rotating banners, ads, or other genuinely volatile areas only when those areas are outside the behavior under test. Filtering can conceal real regressions if applied too broadly.

Filter volatile content when appropriate

Playwright’s stylePath option applies a stylesheet to the page for a screenshot assertion. Use it to suppress known unstable elements while keeping the rest of the page under test:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('stable page appearance', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.test');
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({
    stylePath: './tests/visual.css',
  });
});

For example, tests/visual.css could hide a test-specific timestamp element. Keep filtering limited to content that is genuinely irrelevant to the assertion. Playwright documents screenshot assertion options, including stylePath, in its PageAssertions API.

Keep the rendering environment aligned

  • Use the same operating system or container image and Playwright-managed Chromium version for baseline creation and CI comparison.
  • Keep fonts, viewport, headless mode, browser settings, and other capture conditions consistent.
  • If multiple platforms are part of the product’s test matrix, create and review baselines for each platform. Chromium’s web tests likewise account for platform-specific output and baselines: Web Test Expectations and Baselines.

Choose the capture boundary and tolerance deliberately

Capture the UI that matters

Use a full-page screenshot when page composition is the subject. If the behavior concerns one component or a visible region, keep the assertion focused on that region where your test design allows it. A smaller, relevant capture reduces unrelated changes in the comparison and makes failures easier to diagnose.

For Chrome browser UI tests specifically, Chromium distinguishes Screenshot, which captures the named UI element, from ScreenshotSurface, which captures the containing dialog or window. The Chromium guide advises avoiding other elements likely to change independently. See Testing Chrome browser UI with Pixel Tests.

Set a threshold only after inspecting output

Playwright supports maxDiffPixels and related comparison options. There is no universally correct tolerance: set one based on the differences your team has reviewed and considers acceptable. A large threshold can hide unstable capture conditions or a real UI regression, so first fix nondeterminism and inspect the actual diff. See the PageAssertions API for the available options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read failures and update references safely

  1. Open the expected image, actual image, and diff produced for the failed comparison.
  2. Decide whether the change is an intended design update, an actual regression, or noise from content or environment drift.
  3. If the change is intentional, update the reference with npx playwright test --update-snapshots.
  4. Review the updated image and include the baseline change with the code change so it remains auditable.

For Chromium Pixel Tests, the documented failure output links to Skia Gold for reviewing expected and actual images; inspect the result before accepting or rejecting a change. A baseline update should record an approved change, not merely silence a failing test.

When a hosted visual-testing service is useful

Playwright’s assertion is a good starting point when the need is controlled Chromium snapshots in an existing test suite and the team is comfortable owning baselines in its repository. A hosted workflow may suit teams that need centralized review, cloud snapshots, cross-browser rendering, responsive-width coverage, or a shared approval process. BrowserStack documents Percy’s visual testing and Playwright integration at its partner program page; Chromatic documents its Playwright integration and visual testing workflow.

If your goal is to obtain screenshots through an API rather than compare app snapshots inside Playwright, ScreenshotNeo is an option: it removes supported consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. That is a capture workflow, not a replacement for reviewed Playwright baselines.

Troubleshooting common visual-test failures

Symptom Likely cause What to do
Differences appear on every run Unstable content, animation, delayed rendering, or inconsistent runtime conditions Use fixed test data, wait for the intended page state, and filter only truly volatile elements. Keep the capture environment consistent.
Local tests pass but CI fails Different OS, browser version, fonts, headless mode, viewport, or configuration Align local and CI environments or maintain separate snapshots for intentionally different platforms.
A small harmless change fails the assertion The pixel comparison detects a difference that may be acceptable for this test Inspect the diff first. If the output is acceptable, choose a narrowly justified tolerance such as maxDiffPixels; do not use a broad threshold to mask instability.
A large screenshot diff is difficult to interpret The capture includes unrelated page regions or surrounding UI Reduce the capture boundary to the page, component, or region relevant to the test. For Chromium UI Pixel Tests, use the element or surface capture appropriate to the behavior.
A baseline changed unexpectedly The snapshot was regenerated without confirming why the output changed Review expected, actual, and diff images. Update with npx playwright test --update-snapshots only after approving the visual change.

Or skip the browser setup

For a one-call website capture, use ScreenshotNeo’s API instead of installing and maintaining a browser just to produce an image. The call returns a screenshot; visual-regression review still requires your own comparison and approval workflow. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Playwright’s first screenshot prove the page is visually correct?

No. The first run creates a reference image; a person or review process should approve it before it becomes the expected output.

Can I use Chromium Pixel Tests to test my web application?

Chromium Pixel Tests are documented for Chrome browser UI. For application pages driven by Playwright, use Playwright Test’s screenshot assertion.
