Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You cannot send a Google Cloud Storage object straight to YouTube Live just by providing its gs:// address. For this workflow, a Compute Engine VM runs FFmpeg: first make the video available to the VM, then have FFmpeg send it to the YouTube ingest URL using the stream key from YouTube Studio. The steps below establish that architecture and the setup sequence; they do not give unverified copy-and-run cloud commands or encoder values.
How the GCS-to-YouTube workflow works

- Source: A video object stored in Google Cloud Storage (GCS).
- Encoder: FFmpeg running on a Compute Engine VM. It reads the source file from a location it can access and either passes through compatible streams or re-encodes them as needed.
- Destination: YouTube Live, which provides the stream URL and stream key in Live Control Room.
The practical distinction is that GCS stores the file; it does not itself configure a live broadcast. A standard FFmpeg build should not be assumed to read a gs:// URI directly. Stage the object somewhere FFmpeg can read, such as local VM storage, using a supported Google Cloud Storage client.
Prepare the YouTube live stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the encoder setup. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, place it in a public script, or expose it in command history.
- Choose the stream’s privacy setting in its settings. For a scheduled broadcast, start the encoder first and wait for its preview to appear in Live Control Room; then select Go live.
YouTube documents that streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Stop sending from the encoder to end the feed. See YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder for the current interface and workflow.

Create and secure the Compute Engine workload
Use a VM identity for the workload
For an application running on Google Cloud, Google’s authentication guidance recommends using the service account attached to the VM. Grant that identity only the access required to read the source object or bucket. The exact role and object-level permissions depend on your bucket’s configuration; verify them against your organization’s access policy rather than granting broad Owner or Editor access. Do not put long-lived service-account keys in a script. See Google Cloud’s attached service-account authentication guidance.
Plan for local staging
Before starting FFmpeg, retrieve the object onto VM storage using a documented Google Cloud Storage client and confirm that the VM identity can read it. Check the available disk space against the file size, and confirm the staged file is complete and readable. The exact retrieval command and minimum permission scope are not established here, so use the current Google Cloud Storage documentation and your bucket’s access settings to choose them.

Run FFmpeg against the staged file
Once the video is on the VM, configure FFmpeg to read its local path and send an encoder feed to the YouTube stream URL with the matching stream key. The precise command depends on the file’s container, codecs, timestamps, and the current YouTube ingest recommendations.
Choose stream copy or re-encoding
- Stream copy: Appropriate only when the source’s audio/video codecs, container handling, timestamps, and output are compatible with the chosen YouTube ingest setup. It avoids a new encode but does not fix incompatible media.
- Re-encode: Use when the source format, timestamps, or YouTube requirements call for conversion. Encoding also uses VM CPU or other available compute resources, so verify the VM can sustain the chosen output in real time.
Do not copy encoder values from Google Cloud’s Live Stream API guidance into a direct FFmpeg-to-YouTube command. That API is a different product with its own protocol and bitrate recommendations. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings for the selected ingest method before setting resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, or transport.

Use RTMP or HLS only when configured for it
YouTube’s standard encoder workflow supplies a stream URL and key. HLS is a distinct ingestion option: YouTube says it may be used for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP, and its HLS URL begins with HTTPS. Use it only with an encoder and settings configured for YouTube’s HLS setup; do not substitute an HLS address into an RTMP workflow. See YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream.
Start, monitor, and stop the broadcast
- Start FFmpeg on the VM with the staged file, selected encoding approach, YouTube ingest URL, and stream key.
- Watch the encoder output for read, encode, or connection errors, and check Live Control Room for the incoming preview.
- For a scheduled stream, select Go live after the preview appears. Confirm the public stream is playing as intended.
- To finish, stop the FFmpeg process or otherwise stop sending from the encoder, then verify the live session has ended in YouTube Studio.
When Google’s Live Stream API is the better fit
The Live Stream API is not the same as running FFmpeg on a VM and pushing a feed directly to YouTube. Its documented pattern accepts an SRT or RTMP encoder input, then uses a managed channel to transcode output to HLS or DASH and save it in Cloud Storage. Its described inputs and outputs support H.264 video and AAC audio, with IAM-based access control. Those specifications describe the API, not YouTube’s direct encoder requirements. Review Google Cloud’s Live Stream API overview before choosing that architecture.

| Workflow | What receives the source | What creates the output | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg on Compute Engine to YouTube | FFmpeg on the VM reads the media and pushes a feed to YouTube. | YouTube receives the encoder feed. | Direct prerecorded-file playout to YouTube Live. |
| Google Cloud Live Stream API | An API input endpoint receives an encoder’s SRT or RTMP feed. | The API transcodes to HLS or DASH and stores output in Cloud Storage. | Managed live transcoding and streaming output. |
These architectures have different responsibilities; the documented comparison does not establish which will cost less or deliver lower latency for a particular workload. Google’s API-specific best practices are available at Google Cloud Live Stream API best practices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTroubleshooting the main failure points
- FFmpeg cannot open the source: Confirm the object was staged, the local path is correct, the download completed, and the VM’s attached identity has the required bucket access.
- YouTube shows no incoming preview: Check that FFmpeg is sending to the stream URL for the selected YouTube stream and that the matching stream key is supplied correctly. Keep the key private while checking configuration.
- The source plays locally but fails as a live feed: Check codec, container, and timestamp compatibility. Switch from stream copy to re-encoding when the media or ingest requirements need conversion.
- The stream connects but video or audio is unsuitable: Compare the encoder configuration with YouTube’s current settings for the selected ingest protocol. Do not treat Live Stream API values as YouTube encoder recommendations.
- HLS configuration does not connect: Verify that the stream was set up for YouTube HLS and that the encoder uses its HTTPS ingest URL and required HLS settings, rather than RTMP parameters.
Copyright and channel eligibility still apply
Using a cloud VM or a video already stored in GCS does not grant rights to broadcast it. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s current live-stream policies and any applicable copyright restrictions before broadcasting. A technically successful encoder connection does not guarantee that YouTube will allow a stream or keep it available.
