Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To stream gaming VODs stored on a NAS as a YouTube live playlist, use the NAS for storage and run a playlist-capable encoder such as OBS Studio on a computer that can read the NAS files. Add the files to OBS’s VLC Video source, connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room with your stream URL and key, then preview and start the stream. A NAS share does not send a YouTube live stream by itself.
How the NAS-to-YouTube setup works
The practical path is NAS storage → computer that can access the files → playlist source and encoder → YouTube Live Control Room. The computer runs OBS and reads the VODs over your local network. YouTube receives the encoder’s live output, not a playlist directly from the NAS.

NAS models and software differ. General NAS media-server features do not establish that a particular NAS can run OBS or another encoder. Unless you have confirmed that your NAS supports the necessary software, codecs, processing, network access, and safe handling of the stream key, use a computer for encoding. Synology’s DSM 6.2.3 media-server guide is a legacy example of serving stored media to devices on a local network, not a universal setup guide for streaming to YouTube.

Prepare the VOD playlist and NAS files
Arrange and check the files
- Put the VOD files in the sequence you want to broadcast. Decide whether the playlist should repeat in order or shuffle.
- Play each file locally and check that its video and audio tracks work as expected. Note any files that need a different player or do not play correctly.
- On the computer that will run OBS, connect to the NAS share using your operating system’s normal network-share method. The exact path and mount steps depend on your computer, NAS, and network.
- Open every playlist file from that shared path. Confirm that the account running OBS has permission to read the files and that playback is not interrupted during a local check.
Do not assume a NAS’s DLNA or media-library feature is an OBS playlist input. The relevant check is whether OBS and VLC on the encoder computer can open the files from the NAS share.

Build the playlist in OBS
- Install VLC on the computer running OBS. OBS documents that its VLC Video source can play a list of items; see the OBS Media Sources guide.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you intend to stream.
- Add the VOD files to that source’s playlist in the desired order. Use the source’s loop and shuffle controls to match your plan.
- Play the playlist in OBS before connecting to YouTube. Check ordering, transitions, audio levels, and whether the NAS connection remains available throughout playback.
OBS’s documentation describes the playlist controls; it does not guarantee playback for every file format or NAS setup. If a file will not open or playback stalls, resolve that locally before starting a public broadcast.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream.
- In the encoder’s stream settings, enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s instructions say to enter both in the encoder; follow its current Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder guide for the available controls.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Start streaming from OBS. For a scheduled stream, check the preview in Live Control Room and use YouTube’s on-screen Go Live process when ready.
- Monitor the broadcast, then end the stream using YouTube’s controls when the playlist is finished.
Rehearse and troubleshoot before going live
A private or unlisted rehearsal can help you verify the playlist and encoder path without treating a successful local file check as proof that the live setup is ready. Watch the YouTube preview and confirm the stream is playing as intended before making it public.

- OBS cannot open a VOD: Check the file path from the encoder computer, NAS share permissions, and whether VLC can play that file from the same location.
- The playlist stops or skips: Test each file individually, then the complete list. Check that the NAS share stays connected and the source’s loop or shuffle setting matches your plan.
- There is no YouTube preview: Confirm that OBS is streaming and that the stream URL and key entered in the encoder are the ones shown for the intended YouTube stream.
- YouTube does not let you go live as expected: Follow the prompts and current requirements in Live Control Room; the available controls may change.
- You want to run the encoder directly on the NAS: Confirm support for an appropriate runtime, codecs, processing resources, network access, and secure key handling for your exact NAS and software. General media-server support alone does not establish these capabilities.
RTMP, HLS, and an FFmpeg alternative
OBS is a practical local option because its VLC Video source supports playlists. For compatible encoders, YouTube also documents HLS setup and notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends the stream in segments. Unless a requirement calls for HLS, avoid adding protocol complexity to a straightforward playlist setup. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide.
FFmpeg is another possible software route for readers comfortable with command-line media tools. Its protocol documentation demonstrates real-time file output to an RTMP server. That example is not a ready-to-run YouTube playlist configuration: it does not specify YouTube’s current endpoint, authentication handling, playlist concatenation, restart behavior, NAS compatibility, or safe stream-key management. Check current YouTube instructions and configure those details for your system before relying on an FFmpeg workflow.

Archives, copyright, and VOD rights
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so do not rely on that guidance for a broadcast lasting 12 hours or longer. See the archive guidance in its encoder streaming instructions.
Before streaming, make sure you have the rights needed for the video, music, game footage, and other material in every VOD. A file being stored on your NAS or having been streamed before does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. Check YouTube’s current copyright and channel rules for your content.

Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep a home computer and NAS connection running as the encoder, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube. Upload the recordings, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded files (not a camera feed), supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its plan details, then start your free day.
