How to Stream a Continuous YouTube Playlist from Dropbox Without a PC

Move the video from Dropbox to YouTube using a phone or tablet, add it to a playlist, and enable playlist repeat. A direct Dropbox-to-YouTube loop is not documented.

You can play a Dropbox video continuously on YouTube without keeping a PC on, but the reliable route is to upload the file to YouTube from a phone or tablet, add it to a playlist, then loop that playlist. YouTube does not document a direct Dropbox-folder-to-YouTube playback connection, so expect to make the file available on your mobile device first.

What this method does—and does not do

This creates repeating playback of prerecorded video in YouTube; it is not a live broadcast. YouTube’s documented upload flow imports a selected video file into YouTube, and playlist repeat plays the uploaded video or sequence again. There is no verified direct connection in this workflow that continuously plays a Dropbox folder without uploading its contents.

If you specifically need a real-time YouTube live broadcast, that is a different workflow with separate channel eligibility rules. For a continuous loop of existing video, a playlist is the simpler fit.

Set up the video from Dropbox on your phone or tablet

  1. Make the file available to the device. Open Dropbox and use the app’s available save, export, or share controls to make a local copy if the video is cloud-only. Then check that it appears in your device’s file or photo picker. Whether a cloud-only Dropbox file appears directly in YouTube’s picker depends on the operating system, app versions, and file-provider behavior; that handoff is not guaranteed.
  2. Upload it in YouTube. On Android, open the YouTube app, tap Create, choose Video, select the file, and continue through the upload details and visibility settings. On iPhone or iPad, choose an existing video in the YouTube app’s upload flow. YouTube says the file is imported to YouTube when uploaded; it is no longer being played straight from Dropbox.
  3. Choose upload connectivity. Prefer reliable Wi-Fi for a large file. YouTube’s Android app offers a choice between Wi-Fi and mobile-network uploads; the iPhone/iPad instructions include a Wi-Fi-only setting. Check the relevant app setting before starting if mobile data use matters.
  4. Set the video’s visibility. Pick the audience access you want during upload. A private video is restricted to you; an unlisted video is accessible to people with its link; a public video can be discoverable on YouTube. Playlist privacy is a separate setting, so check both if you want the video and playlist to have matching access.

Create a playlist and repeat the whole sequence

  1. Create or choose a playlist. In the Android YouTube app, you can create a playlist from the You tab or from a video. Give it a title and choose its privacy. Add the uploaded Dropbox video to that playlist during upload or afterward. Add other uploaded videos if you want a sequence rather than a single-video loop.
  2. Start the playlist. Open the playlist in YouTube and begin playback.
  3. Enable playlist repeat. In the mobile player, use the playlist control box and tap Loop. YouTube distinguishes repeating the playlist from repeating the current video: a second tap changes to current-video repeat. Confirm the control is set to repeat the playlist if you want the entire sequence to cycle.

YouTube’s help describes looping as playing a video or playlist on repeat: Loop videos or playlists on YouTube. App controls can move between versions, so if the labels differ, look for the playlist repeat control in the current player.

Watch on a TV without a PC

You can use the YouTube app installed on a smart TV or streaming device, or cast from the YouTube mobile app. YouTube says you cannot cast from youtube.com in a mobile browser. If you need to connect a phone and TV that are not on the same Wi-Fi network, YouTube also documents linking them with a TV code. See Watch YouTube on your smart TV for the current linking and casting options.

Playlist repeat versus YouTube live streaming

A repeating playlist is prerecorded playback, not a live channel broadcast. YouTube’s mobile live-streaming guidance says a channel needs at least 50 subscribers, verification, live streaming enabled, and no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Those conditions apply to mobile live streaming, not to ordinary playlist playback. Check YouTube’s current eligibility pages before planning a broadcast: Get started with live streaming and Create a live stream on mobile.

Common problems and fixes

  • The Dropbox video is missing from YouTube’s picker: use Dropbox’s available save, export, or share-to-device option to create a local copy, then reopen YouTube and try again.
  • The upload is taking too long or using mobile data: switch to a dependable Wi-Fi connection and check YouTube’s upload-network setting. Large files can take substantial time and data to transfer.
  • Only one video repeats: tap the playlist loop control until it is set to playlist repeat rather than current-video repeat.
  • The playlist or video is inaccessible to someone else: review the privacy settings for both the video and the playlist. Private playlists are visible only to their owner; unlisted access requires the link.
  • Casting from a phone browser does not work: open the YouTube mobile app to cast, or use YouTube’s app on the TV or streaming device.

Other cloud and offline options

Google Drive separately documents playing uploaded videos in its Android app, subject to supported formats and resolution and network constraints. That is cloud playback in Drive, not a way to create or repeat a Dropbox-sourced YouTube playlist; see Play videos in Google Drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube offline downloads are a separate feature, available only for eligible videos in selected countries or regions under YouTube’s rules, and require periodic reconnection. They do not connect Dropbox to YouTube or replace playlist repeat.
