The architecture is straightforward; the exact playlist command, instance size, and restart behavior depend on your media and workload, so validate them rather than assuming a Lightsail plan will handle a particular resolution or run indefinitely without interruption.
How the Lightsail-to-YouTube setup works
An encoder converts video into a digital stream that YouTube can receive. In this setup, the playlist and encoder run on your Lightsail Linux instance, and the encoder sends an outbound feed to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. The channel’s public watch page is served by YouTube, not by Lightsail.

YouTube’s encoder workflow uses two destination values from Live Control Room: a stream URL and a stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a public script or screenshot, or share it with anyone who does not need access. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

Check YouTube eligibility and create the stream
- Confirm live access. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming before your planned start.
- Create or select an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use. Copy the stream URL and key displayed for that stream; do not substitute values from an unrelated example.
- Choose visibility and test deliberately. Use a private or unlisted test where appropriate. Confirm that Live Control Room receives the feed and that the watch page, video, and audio behave as expected before making the stream public.
Keep the stream key out of command histories, shared support logs, and source control. If your encoder configuration must contain the key, restrict access to that file and the account that runs the encoder.
Prepare a Lightsail instance for the encoder
Choose capacity from the actual workload
Lightsail bundles combine vCPU, memory, storage, and data transfer. AWS identifies compute-optimized plans as useful for video-encoding workloads, but the guidance does not establish that a particular bundle can encode any specific resolution or bitrate. Test with the exact source, codec, output settings, and expected reliability requirements.
The CPU demand differs substantially depending on whether the playlist files are already encoded in a format and bitrate YouTube can accept, or whether your instance must decode and re-encode them. Measure CPU and memory while the real playlist is running, and check that storage is sufficient for the files, logs, and any working or temporary media.

AWS recommends considering EC2 when a workload needs consistently high CPU performance and more configurability. That is a trade-off in hosting choice, not a guarantee that a Lightsail instance will fail or that EC2 alone will solve stream interruptions.
Set up access and network rules
Lightsail’s instance firewall filters inbound traffic to the public IP, permits outbound traffic, and maintains separate IPv4 and IPv6 rules. For this outbound encoder workflow, YouTube’s ingest connection does not require you to open an inbound YouTube port. Limit SSH access to trusted source IP addresses where practical, and only expose other inbound services that you actually administer.
A Lightsail instance’s default public IPv4 address can change after you stop and start it. Attach a static IP if you need a stable address for administration or DNS. That address stability is separate from the encoder’s outbound connection to YouTube.

Configure the playlist encoder and YouTube destination
Make the playlist a reliable input
Install the Linux encoder you have chosen and arrange for it to read or produce the intended playlist feed. The playlist format, file ordering, looping flags, process supervision, and reconnect behavior are encoder-specific. YouTube and AWS’s general setup guidance do not prescribe a particular FFmpeg command or a tested systemd service for this use case.
Before relying on an unattended stream, verify how your chosen encoder handles the end of a file, the end of a playlist, missing or corrupt media, and a dropped network connection. Make sure the process continues into the next item as intended and does not silently stop when a file is unavailable.
Use YouTube-compatible output settings
Configure the encoder with the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, supports H.264 video among its encoder options, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. Select resolution, bitrate, and audio settings that match the source and that your instance can encode and upload consistently.

Do not choose output settings based only on a theoretical maximum for the instance. Run a representative test and watch both encoder resource use and YouTube’s stream health. A stream that overloads the CPU or saturates available network capacity may stutter or disconnect even if the configuration looks valid.
Test continuity before leaving it unattended
- Start with a short private or unlisted test. Confirm that YouTube receives the encoder feed, displays a healthy preview, and plays both picture and sound.
- Test the playlist boundary. Observe a transition between files and confirm the playlist continues rather than ending after the first item.
- Test recovery paths. Separately test what happens after the encoder process stops, the host reboots, the network drops, and YouTube ends or loses the ingest session. Confirm which components restart automatically and which require manual action.
- Monitor an extended run. Check CPU, memory, storage, transfer usage, encoder logs, and YouTube stream health. A successful short test does not prove stable operation over a longer period.
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archival note does not establish that one encoder session can stay live indefinitely. Verify session behavior and recovery for your intended duration rather than treating a looping playlist as a guarantee of one uninterrupted YouTube session.

Estimate Lightsail transfer and operating cost
A continuous stream sends data out to the internet for as long as it runs. Lightsail transfer allowances vary by region; both transfer in and out count toward the allowance, and excess outbound internet transfer can incur charges. Check the current regional bundle details and monitor usage rather than treating the listed allowance as guaranteed performance or assuming it will cover a particular stream.

For a rough estimate, multiply the stream’s actual outbound bitrate by its planned uptime, then convert bits to bytes and allow for protocol overhead and other instance traffic. For example, at a steady bitrate of B megabits per second for H hours, payload transfer is approximately B × H × 0.45 gigabytes using decimal units. This is an estimate, not a Lightsail billing quote; compare the result with the regional allowance and check AWS’s current terms for overage treatment.
Also account for the instance bundle, storage needs, and the operational time required to maintain a self-managed encoder. Bundle and pricing details change, so consult current Lightsail information for your region before choosing a plan.
Rights, copyright, and YouTube rules
You are responsible for having the necessary rights to broadcast the playlist live, including music rights and applicable permissions from artists, labels, publishers, and other rights holders. If YouTube creates an archive, make sure your permissions also cover that use. Repeating the same playlist continuously does not exempt the stream from copyright rules, YouTube terms, or applicable law.
