To stream a continuous nature video playlist on YouTube Live, prepare footage you have the right to use, create a YouTube broadcast, and send the playlist through an encoder using the stream URL and key. You can run the encoder on your own computer or use a cloud service. Before committing to either, check channel eligibility, test the entire stream, and plan how you will monitor it: YouTube does not establish a maximum runtime or an uptime guarantee for this workflow.
1. Check that your channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Enable live streaming before you need the broadcast; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance. Confirm access in YouTube Studio before preparing a scheduled start.

2. Prepare the playlist and clear its rights
Assemble the nature videos in the order you want them to play. Decide whether the stream will repeat a single video or move through a playlist, and check transitions and audio levels before going live. If the footage has a soundtrack, ambient recordings, or other audio, clear those rights separately from the video rights. Keep license and permission records, including the territories and uses they cover.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can cause YouTube to replace the stream with a placeholder, issue a warning, or interrupt or terminate the broadcast if the material remains or a strike is issued. Even with a license, you may need the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

YouTube’s livestream terms say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read the livestream terms and conditions and make sure your permissions cover both the live broadcast and any resulting archive.
3. Create the broadcast and connect an encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or select the broadcast and set its visibility, title, description, and schedule as appropriate.
- Choose an encoder workflow. The encoder sends the playlist’s audio and video to YouTube; it is not the same as simply uploading a video.
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the matching fields in your encoder. Use the stream key for the correct broadcast. YouTube describes the key as the credential that tells the encoder where to send its feed and lets YouTube accept it; keep it confidential and do not share it publicly. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Load the playlist or prepared video source into the encoder and confirm that it is sending to the intended broadcast. Wait for the preview and stream-health indicators before starting the public stream.
4. Set encoder quality to match your connection
For the standard encoder workflow, YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Its general guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Use a codec supported by your encoder, and refer to YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution table for the setting combination you choose.

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. The platform’s H.264 recommendations include 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps and 5 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. Those are YouTube-published recommendations, not a guarantee that your encoder or connection will sustain the stream. Check your available upload capacity and choose a conservative setting that leaves headroom rather than aiming at the connection’s theoretical maximum.
When HLS is relevant
HLS is an alternative for compatible encoders, not a requirement just because the source is prerecorded. YouTube’s HLS setup requires HTTPS POST/PUT, TS segments of 1–4 seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; byte range is unsupported. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments. Use it only if your encoder and workflow need it and you can meet those requirements. 5. Test the complete stream before relying on it
Run a private or otherwise appropriate test broadcast before announcing a continuous stream. A preview alone is not enough: check the complete path from playlist source through encoder and network to YouTube playback.
- Confirm the right broadcast, stream key, and visibility are selected.
- Check picture, audio, audio-video sync, and playback on the YouTube watch page.
- Watch playlist transitions, including the point where the playlist returns to its beginning.
- Check stream health and confirm the stream is accessible to the intended audience.
- Monitor while live so you can notice and respond to feed or quality problems.
YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend testing, checking the preview, and monitoring the broadcast. Do not assume a successful test proves that an extended stream will run indefinitely.

6. Choose where the encoder runs
Run it locally
A local encoder gives you direct control over your playlist and setup, but the computer, source files, and internet connection all need to remain available for the stream to continue. A power loss, reboot, encoder failure, or network interruption can stop the feed. Plan how you will monitor and restart it, and do not treat a local setup as unattended unless you have tested its recovery behavior.

A hosted service can remove the need to keep a home computer running, but capabilities, service limits, regional availability, pricing, rights workflows, and recovery behavior vary. Verify those details directly with the provider. YouTube’s encoder guide identifies a cloud-service category for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming; that does not establish any provider’s current limits or terms. YouTube also does not state a maximum duration or uptime guarantee for this particular continuous-playlist workflow.
