To loop a prerecorded gaming video on YouTube Live with OBS, add it as a Media Source and enable Loop. For a rotation of multiple videos, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable playlist looping; VLC must be installed. Connect OBS to a YouTube Live stream with its stream URL and key, then verify the preview, audio, and local recording before relying on the broadcast.
The important limit: YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous broadcast is therefore not a guarantee of one complete YouTube replay.

Choose the right OBS source for your archive
This guide is for replaying existing video files, not capturing live gameplay. OBS provides two useful approaches, depending on whether you want one file or a playlist.

Set up a loop in OBS
Loop one video file
- Open OBS and create or select a scene for the broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, add a Media Source and choose the local gaming video file.
- Enable Loop in the source properties so the file starts again after it finishes.
- Check the OBS preview and audio meters. Confirm the video is visible and sound is reaching the stream mix.
Loop a playlist
- Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS does not show the VLC Video source without it.
- Add a VLC Video source to the scene.
- Build the playlist by adding the files you want played.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled to repeat the list. Select shuffle only if you want files played in randomized order.
- Check the preview and audio before going live.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select a stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- In OBS, open the streaming settings and enter the YouTube stream URL and key. YouTube describes the key as the credential that lets an encoder send its feed to the correct stream. Treat it like a password: do not share it, and reset it in Studio if it is compromised. See YouTube’s live stream settings help.
- Start streaming in OBS. Check that the feed appears in the Live Control Room and verify picture and sound.
- If the selected YouTube stream settings require a manual start, start the event in Live Control Room as well. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection and start/end flow.
Test the setup before treating it as ready for a long broadcast. YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring stream quality; its live streaming tips also advise checking that a local recording is growing.
Protect the archive: YouTube replay and DVR are different
Automatic archive has a 12-hour risk threshold
YouTube Help says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” Its archive guidance also warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. This is not a guarantee that every shorter stream will archive successfully. If retaining the broadcast matters, do not rely on a single uninterrupted session to become a complete YouTube replay. Consider planned session boundaries, while recognizing that splitting a broadcast does not guarantee successful archives. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

DVR controls what viewers can do while you are live
DVR is separate from the post-stream archive. When available, it lets viewers pause and resume a live stream, but rewind can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers also cannot seek to a point before the stream began. DVR compatibility may be more limited on Apple TV, AirPlay, or older apps. Details are in YouTube’s DVR help.

Keep a local recording as a separate backup
- In OBS, enable recording alongside streaming and choose a local destination with enough free space for the session.
- Start the stream and recording, then confirm the recording file is growing while the broadcast runs.
- OBS recommends MKV for recording because an unexpected stop is less likely to corrupt the whole file. See the OBS Standard Recording Output guide.
A local recording is a backup, not a substitute for checking that the file is being written and that the destination has room.

When you mean live gameplay instead of an archive
To show gameplay as it happens, use a capture source rather than looping a file: OBS provides Game Capture on Windows and video capture device sources, including for capture cards. A capture card is conditional on your device and setup; it is not required for replaying local archive files. See the OBS Sources Guide.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The file stops instead of restarting: Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop.
- VLC Video is missing from the source list: Install VLC, then check OBS again.
- The playlist ends after the last file: Check that Loop Playlist is enabled in the VLC Video source properties.
- The stream does not appear in Live Control Room: Confirm OBS is using the correct YouTube stream URL and key, then check the selected stream in Studio.
- The preview appears, but viewers cannot hear the video: Check the source audio and OBS audio meters, then verify sound in the Live Control Room before relying on the broadcast.
- The YouTube replay is missing or incomplete after a very long stream: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured as an archive. Use a local recording backup and consider planned session boundaries if YouTube replays matter.
- The local backup is absent or incomplete: Confirm OBS recording is enabled, check the destination and available space, and verify that the file grows during the broadcast.
