Decide what the portfolio needs to show
First agree with the client on which pages belong in the portfolio and why: design review, content review, competitor reference, QA evidence or a before-and-after record. That purpose determines whether you need the complete rendered page, selected sections, separate desktop and mobile views, or a text-focused printable document.

Confirm that you have permission to capture and share any private, unpublished or client-owned pages. Before capturing, remove unrelated personal information and account details from view. If confidentiality matters, use the client’s approved sharing channel for the finished PDF.

Use the same browser, viewport width, zoom level and device mode for captures that will be compared. If responsive design is relevant, capture desktop and mobile layouts separately rather than mixing them without labels. Record each page’s actual URL and capture date; also note its device or viewport and any state that affects interpretation, such as an open accordion or selected pricing tab.

Let the page finish loading before you capture it. Check that images and other content have appeared, and note any relevant state that a future reader would need to reproduce the view. This labeling is workflow guidance, not a requirement imposed by Chrome or PDF software.
Capture complete pages in Chrome
A normal viewport screenshot records only what is currently visible. For a full-page capture, Chrome DevTools documents a full-page screenshot workflow in its guide to capturing screenshots with DevTools. For a particular large element, DevTools has also documented node screenshots that can include content below the viewport; the interface may change from the historical Chrome 89 guidance, so follow the current DevTools controls if labels differ: What’s New In DevTools (Chrome 89).
After capture, preview the image rather than assuming a successful download means the page is complete. Confirm the intended top and bottom are present, overlays have not hidden content, and the result is large enough to inspect. A very tall, narrow image can preserve visual continuity but make text hard to read on a standard PDF page. For long pages, consider capturing selected sections or using a multi-page layout instead.

Assemble the PDF portfolio
For individual screenshots, place the chosen images in a document or PDF editor, set a consistent fit and margin, then export them as one PDF. Acrobat is one option: Adobe documents converting web pages to PDFs in its desktop application, though this is a direct web-page conversion workflow rather than a requirement for a screenshot portfolio. Other document and PDF editors can assemble the images. See Adobe’s web-page-to-PDF instructions.
- Cover: identify the client or project, the review purpose, who prepared the portfolio and the preparation date.
- Contents or page index: list page titles and URLs, grouped into sections if that makes the sequence easier to follow.
- Capture pages: place each capture in an order the client can follow. Use one capture per page or section, and keep sizing and margins consistent.
- Short annotations: state what the client should review. Distinguish observed facts from recommendations.
- Closing summary: add key findings or next actions only when the engagement calls for them.
Screenshot-based output is intended to retain the rendered visual appearance, while direct page-to-PDF conversion can produce a more document-like rendering. Adobe documents its conversion function; the exact result depends on the page and chosen workflow. If a text-focused printable document matters more than an image-like record, compare the conversion result with a screenshot-based version before choosing.
Choose page shape and check pagination
A single tall page can show a long page continuously, but may be awkward to read or print. Standard paper sizes such as A4 or Letter, portrait or landscape pages, or section-sized captures may be more practical. Available formats depend on the tool: FullPage Capture describes its own screenshot-based PDF exporter as offering a single long page or standard paper sizes and smart page breaks. Inspect page boundaries before delivery. Check whether breaks cut through text, tables or images, and whether a sticky header or other fixed element appears repeatedly in a confusing way. The same vendor documents optional URL and date stamps; check the selected tool’s current documentation if you want those labels embedded in the output.
Review the exported file before sending
- Open the exported PDF on a typical laptop screen and inspect every page.
- Verify each capture includes the intended top and bottom and that important content is not covered by overlays.
- Check that text remains readable at normal zoom and that page breaks do not obscure the point of a capture.
- Confirm the order, page count, labels, URLs and dates.
- Make sure filenames identify the client or project and date, and remove any unrelated account details or personal information.
Very long captures can fail or split. FullPage Capture’s help page states a Chrome canvas limit of “28,800 px per side or ~259 million pixels of area.” This is the vendor’s stated limitation, not a universal browser guarantee; see its Help & FAQ. If a capture is split or incomplete, use smaller section captures or a multi-page approach, then check the assembled PDF again.

The screenshot stops at the visible viewport
A standard viewport screenshot does not include below-the-fold content. Use Chrome DevTools’ full-page screenshot workflow, or capture a specific large element with the documented node screenshot approach. If a complete image becomes unwieldy, capture sections and label them in sequence.
Part of the page is blank or missing
Wait for the page and its images to load, then capture again and inspect the result. For a very long page, reduce the capture size by taking section captures; the FullPage Capture help page describes browser canvas limits that can affect very large images.

The client cannot read the page in the PDF
A tall full-page image may shrink too far when fitted onto standard paper. Split the page into selected sections, use multiple pages, or choose a direct page-to-PDF conversion if a text-focused document suits the purpose better.

Check for consent banners, popups, chat widgets and sticky elements before capture. Note any page state that should remain open, and inspect the full exported PDF for repeated fixed elements or overlays that interfere with the content.
Page breaks interrupt important material
Change the image sizing or page layout, or divide the capture at a sensible section boundary. Do not rely solely on a tool’s smart-break description; verify the actual exported pages at normal viewing size.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use screenshots or save the web page directly as a PDF?
Use screenshots when the client needs a visual record of the page as rendered. Consider direct conversion when a document-like, text-focused output is the priority. The results can differ, so choose based on the deliverable rather than assuming the two formats are interchangeable.
Should each screenshot have its own PDF page?
Not necessarily. Use one capture per page when it remains legible at normal zoom; divide a long page into labeled sections when fitting it to one sheet would make the content too small.
