How to Stream a Charity Gala Replay Continuously on YouTube Live

A practical guide to looping a recorded charity gala through YouTube Live, with rights checks, encoder setup, testing, bandwidth planning, and archive limits.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To keep a recorded charity gala playing on YouTube Live, send the video into a scheduled encoder-based live stream and configure the encoder or playback system to repeat the file. YouTube provides the live-stream connection; looping is an encoder-dependent feature, not a setting documented in YouTube’s setup guidance. For a limited replay window, schedule a run and monitor it. For an around-the-clock channel, plan for interruptions, rights checks, and separate archive handling if the stream runs longer than 12 hours.

Before you start: check eligibility and rights

Make sure the channel can stream

YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to activate, and YouTube states that livestreamers must be at least 16. Check eligibility before announcing the replay: YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup guidance.

Clear every part of the recording

A recording’s availability does not establish permission to retransmit it. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the content provider to have the necessary rights for the live content, including music licensing rights. For a gala replay, ask the organizer to confirm that permissions cover the recording, performers, venue, sponsor or other third-party clips, and all music—including background and walk-on tracks—in the intended territories and for YouTube live retransmission and the archive. This is a practical rights check, not legal advice.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may replace a stream with a placeholder and interrupt or terminate it if a match remains. A license alone may not prevent an interruption: YouTube says a rights holder may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Claims can also apply to the archived stream after it ends. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and coordinate with rights holders before going live.

Choose a replay setup that can run unattended

Setup When it may fit Check before relying on it
Computer with software encoder A modest setup where an operator can manage the computer and playback software. Whether it can repeat the file unattended, maintain the selected output settings, and recover simply after a restart or interruption.
Standalone hardware encoder A dedicated or higher-production setup. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events. Whether it can play and loop the media, support remote monitoring and failover, and be operated by your team. A gala replay does not automatically require hardware.
Cloud or broadcast-processing encoder More complex broadcast operations; YouTube lists cloud video processing among encoder categories. Whether it accepts your replay source, can repeat it, provides useful redundancy, and has an acceptable ongoing cost.

YouTube documents how to connect an encoder, not a particular loop control. Confirm the repeat behavior in the encoder you choose, and do not assume every encoder can play a file unattended. Its encoder guidance and live-stream tips cover the platform workflow and preparation, but do not establish a best product for looping a gala recording.

Set up the YouTube Live event and encoder

  1. Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a scheduled encoder stream. Scheduling gives supporters an event page to find in advance. For current controls, see Manage live stream settings.
  2. Connect the encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key from the event’s stream settings into the encoder. Treat the key like a password: keep it private and do not include it in public instructions or screenshots. YouTube’s encoder walkthrough describes this connection.
  3. Load the replay and enable repeat. Add the gala recording as the encoder’s media source and configure its repeat or loop option if available. Set the desired output resolution and frame rate to match a stable, supported source/output combination. The loop is controlled by the chosen encoder or playback software, not by a YouTube setting documented in the cited setup instructions.
  4. Choose ingest and encoding settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest; see its RTMPS instructions. For encoder settings, use constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube transcodes streams into supported viewer formats. Use the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate guidance in YouTube’s encoder settings recommendations rather than assuming one bitrate fits every output.
  5. Consider HLS only if your workflow supports it. YouTube supports HLS ingest with specific playlist and segment requirements. It has higher latency because video is delivered in segments, so it may be unsuitable when a lower-delay stream is important. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Test the full playback path before supporters arrive

Test the exact file, encoder, network, YouTube event, and public player—not just the encoder’s local preview. YouTube advises configuring at least two hours before the stream and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. Its live-stream tips recommend checking the preview, monitoring audio and video, and testing backup ingest if you use it.

  • Confirm the video repeats cleanly, including the transition from its final frame back to the beginning.
  • Check the Live Control Room preview and the public watch page, including playback on a phone. Listen for missing, distorted, or unexpectedly loud audio.
  • If recording locally as a separate archive, verify that the file is actually being written and can be played back.
  • If you have backup ingest, test failover by stopping the primary feed and confirming the backup takes over as expected.
  • Assign a person to watch the stream and respond to interruptions rather than assuming a tested setup cannot fail.

Plan bandwidth, monitoring, and archive handling

For primary and backup ingest, YouTube recommends upload capacity covering both stream bitrates plus 20% additional headroom. This is a capacity recommendation, not an uptime guarantee. A network disruption can break the feed, so use a reliable connection and have an operator or tested recovery plan. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep an eye on stream health in Live Control Room and on the actual player. When the event or replay run is over, stop the encoder deliberately. YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a longer continuous run becoming one complete archive; plan separate recordings or other archive handling and verify the current behavior in Studio.

Troubleshoot common replay failures

  • The encoder cannot connect: Recheck that the stream URL and key belong to the scheduled event, that the key was copied correctly, and that the channel remains eligible to stream. Keep the key private.
  • The replay stops at the end of the file: The media source may not be set to repeat, or the encoder may not support unattended looping. Check the selected encoder’s loop behavior and test a complete cycle before launch.
  • The image or sound is unstable: Check the encoder output settings and available upload capacity. Apply YouTube’s CBR and keyframe recommendations, and ensure upload headroom covers primary and backup bitrates plus the recommended margin.
  • YouTube interrupts or replaces the stream: A third-party content match may be involved. Check Live Control Room notifications, contact the relevant rights holder, and confirm any required Content ID allowlisting. Do not assume a general license automatically prevents a live interruption.
  • The backup does not take over: Backup ingest is useful only if it is configured and tested. Repeat the failover test and confirm the encoder and network path for the backup are available.
  • The archive is incomplete or absent after a long run: The cited automatic-archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. For longer runs, use a separate recording or archive plan and check the current Studio result.
