Restore the internet connection first, then check whether your encoder is producing audio and video locally, reconnect it to YouTube with the correct stream URL and key, and verify the preview and stream health in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. If the original event has ended, do not assume its watch page will resume: YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not specify a reconnection deadline or guarantee continuity.

Restore and test the outbound connection
Confirm that the venue is back online, then test upload speed. Compare the available upload capacity with the bitrate and other settings your encoder is using. If the connection test remains poor, contact your internet service provider. Do not raise stream quality while the connection is unstable.

Check what the encoder is producing
Look for encoder errors and unusually high CPU load. Inspect the encoder’s audio and video meters or preview, and check a local recording if one is being made. For a radio stream, listen for clear, continuous audio. If the local output is healthy but YouTube is not receiving it, focus on the outbound connection or the path from encoder to YouTube.

Reconnect using the current YouTube destination and key
In YouTube Studio, open the event in Live Control Room and use the Stream tab to confirm the stream URL and stream key. Start or reconnect the encoder using that destination. Previous encoder settings may load again, including a saved key; if YouTube reports an encoder-start error, copy the current key from Live Control Room into the encoder and try again. If you reset the key, update the encoder with the new one.

Verify YouTube is receiving the stream
Wait for the feed and preview in Live Control Room. Read the stream-health messages and status, and check the real-time metrics for signs that data is arriving. Then open the viewer watch page and confirm it loads and that the radio audio is audible. A connected encoder alone is not proof that listeners can hear the broadcast.

Decide whether to keep the event or direct listeners elsewhere
If the current watch page is working and the broadcast is live, share that page with listeners as needed. If the event has ended or the page does not recover, create or select another stream as appropriate and publish its link through your usual listener channels. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not state how long reconnection remains possible or guarantee that an interrupted event resumes as the same event, so avoid promising that the old page will return.

Choose settings the connection can sustain
Use YouTube’s recommended encoder settings as a starting point, not as a promise that a particular connection will be stable. The appropriate bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, and the actual upload connection. For H.264, YouTube’s help guidance lists 5 Mbps as recommended at 1080p/30 fps and 8 Mbps at 720p/60 fps. Test the intended bitrate against the connection before returning to a demanding setting. YouTube’s guidance puts the principle plainly: “Make sure to choose a quality that will result in a reliable stream based on your Internet connection.”
For radio, prioritize uninterrupted, intelligible audio over a high-resolution visual. If the broadcast includes moving visuals, test with representative content: a static image places different demands on the encoder than motion. After changing resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, check the local output and Live Control Room again.

Prevent the next outage from becoming a long interruption
Prepare and test before going live
- Set up the encoder ahead of the broadcast and test the complete path to YouTube with the intended audio, video, and settings.
- Monitor stream health while live, rather than relying only on the encoder’s local status.
- If you configure YouTube encoder failover, test it before an actual incident. YouTube recommends testing by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player switches to the backup.
- Make the backup stream match the primary settings, including resolution, video codec, profile, and bitrate. Mismatched settings can prevent the intended failover.
Treat backup internet as a separate resilience choice
A second connection may help only if it is available at the venue and can sustain the encoder’s upload needs. Before relying on one, assess coverage, data limits, stable upload capacity, and compatibility with the encoder. YouTube’s recovery guidance does not require a particular router, hotspot, UPS, cable, or encoder, and a backup connection cannot guarantee protection from every ISP or power failure.

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That rule does not establish that an outage-interrupted program will be complete: check the resulting archive rather than assuming it contains the missing section or the whole broadcast.
