How to Stream a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Playlist from a NAS

A NAS stores the videos; an encoder must queue them and send a 2160p/60 live feed to YouTube. Learn the settings, bandwidth margin, eligibility, and NAS limits.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stream a playlist of videos stored on a NAS to YouTube Live, use the NAS for storage and a separate encoder that can read and sequence those files, encode a live feed at 2160p/60, and send it to YouTube. A NAS file path alone is not a YouTube live stream. YouTube publishes settings for 4K60, but the result depends on the encoder, source files, codec, and available upload bandwidth.

How the NAS-to-YouTube setup works

The signal path is: NAS-stored videos → an encoder that can access and play or queue those videos → YouTube Live ingestion → viewers. The NAS holds and serves the files; the encoder turns video into a digital live feed and sends it to YouTube using the server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder guide describes that workflow. It does not establish a YouTube feature that accepts a NAS folder or file path as a live playlist.

In practice, choose encoder software or hardware that can access the NAS over your network and can play the files in sequence or repeat them. Check that the encoder can produce the required 2160p/60 output and codec. A NAS may be capable of serving files without being powerful or configured to encode and broadcast them.

Enable YouTube Live before configuring the encoder

YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so complete this before a planned broadcast. In Live Control Room, configure the stream and select its visibility: public, unlisted, or private. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup and live stream settings.

Synology DS225+ Private Cloud Media Server - Stream, Back Up Photos & Share Files, Intel CPU for Hardware Transcoding (2-Bay Diskless NAS)
  • Your Personal Streaming Server - Build your own Netflix-style media library and stream 4K movies, shows and photos to any device without monthly fees
  • Create Your Own Cloud - Store your entire photo, video and music collection; access from anywhere with fast 282 MB/s transfer speeds

  • Multi-Layered Data Protection - Combine RAID redundancy, automated backups and snapshot technology to prevent data loss from any cause
  • Smart Home Surveillance - Support up to 30 IP cameras with AI detection, instant alerts and secure remote monitoring

Keep the stream key private: anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Enter the YouTube server URL and key in the encoder’s streaming settings, following that encoder’s current instructions. YouTube recommends RTMPS for standard ingestion. Its documented RTMP/RTMPS codec options include H.264, HEVC, and AV1; which options appear depends on the encoder.

Configure the encoder for 2160p at 60 fps

YouTube’s encoder settings page, reviewed in 2026, lists the following guidance for 4K/2160p at 60 fps. These are platform settings, not a guarantee that a particular NAS, encoder, source, or connection can sustain them.

Setting YouTube guidance for 4K/2160p at 60 fps
Video bitrate 10–40 Mbps for AV1 or H.265; 35 Mbps recommended for H.264
Frame rate Up to 60 fps in encoder settings
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds
Latency 4K streams do not have the low-latency option and use normal latency

Use the settings appropriate to the codec your encoder actually outputs; do not assume a higher bitrate or resolution setting can make a lower-resolution source into genuine 4K60. Check the encoder’s output preview or status and Live Control Room’s stream health during a test. See YouTube’s encoder settings for the published values and options.

Calculate the upload speed you need

The relevant connection is the encoder’s outbound upload speed to YouTube, not the NAS’s advertised LAN speed or your internet download speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom beyond the combined bitrate of the primary and backup streams, if using a backup. For example, a primary stream set to 35 Mbps with no backup calls for at least 42 Mbps of available upload capacity under that recommendation. If a backup stream is configured, include its bitrate before adding the 20% margin.

Measure upstream capacity where the encoder will run and allow for other devices using the connection. Shared networks can reduce the bandwidth available to the stream. YouTube’s streaming tips also advise leaving room for variation; a speed-test result is not a guarantee of sustained capacity.

Choose SDR or HDR based on the source

For standard dynamic range (SDR), YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit in its advanced encoder settings. Choose SDR when that matches the source and the intended playback setup.

  • 【Local Privacy, Pro-Grade Security】Store files locally on DXP4800 GT instead of third-party cloud servers, with local account mode for LAN-only access when needed. TLS/SSL, RSA, AES, and SHA-512 help secure logins and data transfers, while Security Manager, and flexible permissions provide continuous protection. RAID support adds data redundancy to help reduce the risk of data loss and improve file recovery in the event of drive failure.

HDR is not an automatic feature of 4K resolution. YouTube’s live HDR guidance requires HEVC and a compatible 10-bit/HDR signal configuration. The source and encoder must both support the required output; viewers without supported playback devices see SDR. Consult the relevant encoder settings before selecting the HDR workflow.

Can the NAS broadcast a playlist by itself?

Do not assume so. NAS vendor features can be limited to specific sources and formats. Synology’s documented Surveillance Station Live Broadcast feature is for camera streams: its version 8 instructions describe choosing a camera, entering a YouTube RTMP path and key, and selecting a stream profile. That documentation says the feature’s YouTube Live output supports H.264. It does not establish that the feature can queue stored video files as a playlist or output 4K60. See the version 8 instructions and Synology’s Surveillance Station specifications.

Before relying on a NAS’s built-in broadcast function, confirm the exact model, operating-system and package version, supported source type, stream profile, codec, maximum resolution and frame rate, and whether it can sequence and repeat files. A camera-broadcast feature is not evidence of stored-file playlist support.

Test the full chain before going public

Run a test with the same kind of motion and audio expected in the real stream. YouTube recommends previewing in Live Control Room, monitoring stream health, and checking audio and video quality continuously. Verify the file path, playlist transitions, output settings, and network capacity using the encoder you intend to run; software interfaces and playlist behavior vary by product and version.

  1. Confirm that the encoder can read every required file from the NAS and play the intended order, including any repeat behavior.
  2. Check that the encoder output is 2160p at 60 fps, uses the intended codec and bitrate, and has a 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds).
  3. Check the actual available upload capacity against the primary-plus-backup bitrate and the recommended 20% headroom.
  4. Preview the stream in Live Control Room and inspect stream health, image, audio, and transitions.
  5. Confirm the intended visibility setting and inspect the resulting YouTube watch page before sharing it.

Use the test to catch source or configuration mismatches; platform recommendations alone cannot confirm that a particular encoder and NAS combination will maintain 4K60.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply

Having a file on a NAS does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it. Use material you created or have the necessary rights to stream, including music, images, and any embedded third-party content. Check YouTube’s current rules and any relevant licenses before scheduling a long or looping broadcast. A technically healthy feed does not guarantee that content complies with YouTube policies.
