You can stream a playlist of local video files to YouTube Live from a headless Linux PC by feeding an ordered FFmpeg concat list to an encoder and sending the output to YouTube over RTMPS. For 2160p60, YouTube’s published recommended bitrate is 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265, or 50 Mbps for H.264; you must test that your encoder and upload connection can sustain the chosen settings.
This guide assumes the playlist is made of files you own or are authorized to stream. Rebroadcasting an existing YouTube playlist is a different workflow, and permission to retransmit those videos is not established here.

What you need before you start
- A Linux PC with the video files stored locally and enough processing capacity to encode the chosen 2160p60 format in real time.
- FFmpeg built with the required input and encoder support. The available codecs and hardware encoders depend on your installed build and system.
- A stable outbound internet connection. Upload capacity, not download speed, is the limiting network measure.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to YouTube Live Control Room.
- Video files whose actual resolution and frame rate meet your intended output. Upscaling or duplicating frames does not create source detail or motion information.
YouTube’s encoder recommendations accessed October 3, 2026 list RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, HEVC and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance may change, so check the current page when configuring a production stream.

Use paths that exist and are readable by the account that will run FFmpeg. If paths contain characters that need escaping, follow FFmpeg’s concat-demuxer syntax for your installed version. Keep the files’ stream layouts and media parameters compatible where possible. FFmpeg adjusts timestamps when joining entries, and differences in stream lengths can create gaps; mismatched codecs or layouts may call for a normalized or transcoded workflow instead of a direct join. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation describes the input format and timestamp behavior.
Choose whether the playlist ends or repeats
Decide whether the live broadcast should stop after the final file or continue by repeating the sequence. FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 for infinite input looping, but confirm how that behaves with your concat input, FFmpeg build, and files. Do not assume that a loop works correctly until you have tested the final transition back to the first item.

Set the 2160p60 output
Select a codec and bitrate
YouTube’s published 2160p60 values distinguish codec, so there is no single bitrate that is best for every setup:
| Video codec | YouTube recommended bitrate at 2160p60 | YouTube minimum at 2160p60 | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps | Confirm the encoder supports the codec and can sustain real-time 4K60 encoding. |
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps | Allow for the higher recommended upload demand and verify real-time encode capacity. |
These are YouTube’s published settings, accessed October 3, 2026—not a guarantee of visual quality or successful delivery on a particular machine. YouTube advises choosing a quality reliable for the connection and testing upload capacity. Its encoder guidance also specifies CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings before going live.

Configure audio and color deliberately
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio, 44.1 kHz stereo, and 128 Kbps stereo audio. For SDR it recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth. If the source files have inconsistent audio streams or sample rates, test transitions and consider normalizing them before relying on an unattended playlist. AV1 at resolutions of 3840×2160 and above requires at least two tile columns according to YouTube’s settings guidance.
Keep HDR separate from the standard SDR path
HDR is not just an SDR stream with a different label. YouTube’s HDR guidance specifies HEVC and HLS requirements; HLS uses short transport-stream segments and a rolling playlist and has higher latency than RTMP. Also, 4K streams do not have YouTube’s low-latency optimization option and are set to normal latency. If you need HDR, follow the current YouTube encoder guidance and YouTube HDR live-streaming guidance rather than applying the SDR/RTMPS settings unchanged.

Measure the network before sending a live stream
Measure outbound upload speed and leave headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% room; if you send a backup stream as well, account for the primary bitrate, backup bitrate, and headroom together. YouTube’s advice is to “run a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” See its encoder settings and streaming tips.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Test at the location and time the PC will normally stream; available upload capacity can vary.
- Do not choose a bitrate merely because it is a published target. Confirm the connection can sustain it with the recommended margin.
- Include any backup stream’s bitrate in the total. A connection sized only for the primary feed may not have enough capacity for both.
Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or schedule the live stream and locate the stream settings.
- Copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key. Enter them into your encoder configuration. Treat the key as a password: do not put it in public logs, screenshots, source repositories, or a command history that other users can read. YouTube explains stream-key handling in its stream-key help.
- Configure FFmpeg for the concat input and output. Choose the encoder supported by your build, set the output to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and set the codec-specific bitrate from YouTube’s current guidance. The exact command depends on the source codecs, audio streams, installed FFmpeg features, hardware encoder availability, and RTMPS URL/key, so a generic command cannot be assumed to work unchanged.
- Start with a private or unlisted test. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then verify playback from a viewer’s perspective before changing visibility or relying on the setup unattended.
FFmpeg documents -re as reading input at its native frame rate and -stream_loop -1 as infinite input looping. These options can inform an implementation, but test the actual playlist, output frame rate, and loop behavior on the deployed FFmpeg build. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation provides details for the options available in your version.

Test the complete run before leaving it unattended
YouTube recommends previewing the stream, checking audio and video accessibility, testing the setup, and monitoring stream health. Run a test long enough to cover representative motion, sound, every file transition, and—if applicable—the loop back to the start. Verify the resolution and frame rate YouTube reports rather than relying only on encoder settings.
- Confirm every file opens and plays through to its end without missing audio or unexpected black frames.
- Check playlist transitions for gaps or timing problems; differing stream lengths can create timestamp gaps in concat playback.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and viewer playback for dropped frames, buffering, audio problems, or an output quality different from the intended 2160p60.
- Test what happens after a lost network connection and after an FFmpeg process restart. Automatic restart behavior depends on your local process supervisor and encoder configuration.
- Keep the machine, storage, network connection, and any required cooling available for the full run; headless operation does not remove those dependencies.
See YouTube’s streaming tips for its recommendations on testing and monitoring. If a stream key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room before the next broadcast.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports poor stream health or viewers buffer | Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable for the selected bitrate, particularly when headroom or a backup feed was not included. | Measure outbound upload again; lower the target or choose a more reliable connection, and keep YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. |
| FFmpeg cannot open a playlist entry | A path is incorrect, inaccessible to the service account, or improperly escaped in the concat list. | Check each path and permissions, then validate the playlist file under the same account that runs the stream. |
| Playback has a gap or disruption between files | Input streams differ in duration, codec, or layout; concat timestamp adjustment can create gaps. | Inspect the source files and test a normalized/transcoded set with compatible stream parameters. |
| The stream does not repeat as expected | The loop option may not behave as assumed with the chosen concat workflow or build. | Test the transition from the last entry to the first and confirm the deployed FFmpeg version and loop configuration. |
| Output is not actually 2160p60 | The source, encoder configuration, encoder capacity, or YouTube ingest may not match the intended output. | Check source properties, encoder output settings, system performance, and YouTube’s reported stream resolution and frame rate during a test. |
| Stream stops after a network interruption or process crash | The local encoder or network recovered incompletely; restart behavior is not automatic unless configured. | Test reconnection and process restart, and configure a local supervisor appropriate to your Linux setup. |
Rights and YouTube policy checks
Use only files you own or are authorized to broadcast. The legal or contractual status depends on the material, the rights involved, and the relevant jurisdiction; a video being publicly available does not by itself establish rebroadcast permission. YouTube’s rules and monetization policies also apply to live streams, including copyright and reused-content considerations. Review YouTube’s current live encoder guidance and applicable channel policies before broadcasting. This guide cannot determine whether a particular playlist is eligible for streaming or monetization.
