How to Stream a 4K 60fps Video Loop to YouTube Live from Ubuntu Server

A practical guide to preparing a 4K60 source, pacing it with FFmpeg, configuring YouTube Live ingest, and testing an Ubuntu Server loop.

To stream a prerecorded video from Ubuntu Server at 4K and 60 fps, send it to YouTube Live with FFmpeg over RTMPS, pace file playback in real time, and configure the encoder for YouTube’s current ingest recommendations. For H.264 at 2160p60, YouTube recommends 35 Mbps constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. Your source, encoder and server must all sustain the target format; an upscaled file is not native 4K detail.

What you need before you start

  • An Ubuntu Server with the video file available locally and enough storage for it.
  • An FFmpeg build that includes the encoder you intend to use. The available encoders depend on how FFmpeg was built and what hardware the host supports.
  • A YouTube channel with access to Live Control Room, where you can create or configure the live stream and retrieve its current RTMPS destination and stream key.
  • An internet connection that can sustain the outgoing bitrate with additional capacity for normal variation. YouTube recommends testing the connection, but does not specify a universal upload-speed multiplier.

Keep the stream key private: it authorizes publishing to your channel. Do not place it in a public script, paste it into support forums, or commit it to a repository.

Check that the source is really 4K at 60 fps

Inspect the file before configuring the stream. Use ffprobe or another media inspector to check its dimensions, frame rate, video and audio streams, and codecs. Confirm that the video is 3840 × 2160 and that its frame rate supports the intended output. A lower-resolution source can be scaled up, but scaling does not restore detail that was not captured.

Also confirm whether the file has an audio stream and whether its audio plays correctly. A video without audio may be appropriate for some broadcasts, but a missing or silent track can also be an unintended source-file problem.

Set YouTube’s ingest parameters

YouTube Help lists 2160p (4K) at up to 60 fps. Its current recommendation for H.264 at 2160p60 is 35 Mbps. YouTube’s encoder guidance calls for CBR and recommends a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. The exact available codec and bitrate choices can depend on your encoder and YouTube’s current settings.

  • Resolution and frame rate: 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps, only if the source and encoding path can sustain them.
  • H.264 bitrate: 35 Mbps recommended by YouTube Help for 2160p60; configure CBR.
  • Keyframes: two-second interval recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Transport: use RTMPS. YouTube states, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP video protocol.” Use the current destination shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming a fixed server address.
  • Latency: YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable for 4K; 4K streams use normal latency.

YouTube Help also lists AV1/H.265 at 10–40 Mbps, but do not choose a codec solely from that range: verify that the encoder and YouTube ingest configuration you are using support the selected codec. YouTube’s settings can change, so check its current encoder guidance before a planned broadcast.

Prepare FFmpeg and pace the file as a live input

For a local file, FFmpeg’s -re option reads the input at its native frame rate. FFmpeg documents it as equivalent to -readrate 1 and explains that real-time reading is useful when output packet timing matters, such as in live streaming. Put input options such as -re before the corresponding -i in the command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This pacing matters: without real-time pacing, a file can be read faster than its intended playback speed, which is not the behavior wanted for a live broadcast. The input frame rate still comes from the file; pacing does not convert a lower-frame-rate source into genuine 60 fps footage.

Check the installed FFmpeg version and its documentation for the exact syntax needed to replay a file indefinitely. The reliable details available here establish real-time pacing, but not a verified indefinite-loop command or a tested, complete command line. Do not copy a loop option from another machine or version without confirming it locally.

Configure the encoder and publish

  1. Inspect the host’s FFmpeg build. Confirm that the chosen H.264, H.265 or AV1 encoder is present and usable. If using hardware encoding, verify that the installed build recognizes the relevant hardware encoder.
  2. Choose an encoding path that sustains the target. Software encoding and supported hardware encoding are host-specific choices. Measure sustained 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps throughput on the actual server; no universal performance result follows from the Ubuntu version alone.
  3. Match output to the source and YouTube target. Set the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR bitrate and keyframe interval. For H.264 2160p60, use YouTube’s 35 Mbps recommendation and two-second keyframes.
  4. Open YouTube Live Control Room. Retrieve the current RTMPS ingest destination and stream key for the stream. Treat the key as a password.
  5. Build the FFmpeg command using your installed version’s syntax. Place -re before the file’s -i. Add the encoder and output settings supported by your FFmpeg build, then use the RTMPS destination and key from Live Control Room. Verify the stream-loop syntax separately if the file must repeat indefinitely.
  6. Start a test broadcast before relying on it. Check motion, audio, the ingested resolution and frame rate, and YouTube’s stream-health messages. Test with representative movement and sound rather than only a static opening frame.

Plan for continuous operation and interruptions

A command that sends a file to YouTube is not, by itself, an unattended streaming service. A long-running setup also needs a deliberate approach to process supervision, restart behavior, logging and network interruptions. Those service details depend on the host and configuration; do not assume that FFmpeg will automatically recover from every failure or that a sample command guarantees continuous operation.

Troubleshooting a 4K60 stream

YouTube does not show 2160p60

  • Confirm the source dimensions and frame rate with a media inspector; scaling a smaller source does not make it native 4K.
  • Check the encoder output settings and YouTube’s ingest status to see whether the stream is arriving at the intended resolution and frame rate.
  • Verify that the host can encode at the target rate continuously, rather than only starting successfully.

The stream buffers, drops frames or reports poor health

  • Check that the upload connection can sustain the configured outgoing bitrate, with capacity for variation. YouTube recommends testing but does not define a universal headroom ratio.
  • Check server load and whether the selected software or hardware encoder can sustain 4K60.
  • Review YouTube’s health messages and test representative motion, not just a low-motion segment.

The file plays too quickly or the live output is mistimed

  • Use FFmpeg’s documented real-time pacing option -re before the relevant -i input.
  • Check the source frame rate. Pacing a file at its native rate does not create missing frames or convert it into native 60 fps material.

The broadcast stops when unattended

  • Determine whether the process exited, the server lost network connectivity, or YouTube stopped receiving the stream; inspect logs and Live Control Room health information.
  • Design and validate process supervision and restart behavior for the actual Ubuntu host. A restart alone may not resolve a network or ingest problem, so test recovery rather than assuming it.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Before rebroadcasting a loop, make sure you have the rights to every video and audio component, including music, images and other embedded material. A local file is not automatically cleared for public streaming. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules in YouTube Help and check for claims or restrictions during testing. A technically healthy ingest does not establish that the content is eligible for monetization or complies with YouTube’s channel policies.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube loop rather than managing an Ubuntu server, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the file as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing: $9.99 per month.

StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
