You can run a continuous synthwave radio stream on YouTube by feeding a prepared video or playlist to FFmpeg, encoding it to YouTube’s ingest requirements, and sending it to the server URL with your stream key. The loop handles repeated playback; it does not, by itself, restart a failed FFmpeg process, restore a network connection, or guarantee uninterrupted audio. A reliable 24/7 setup needs rights-cleared media, monitoring, and a recovery plan as well as a working command.
How the 24/7 stream works
The workflow has four parts: prepared audio and visuals, FFmpeg to read and loop the media, an encoded output connection, and YouTube Live ingest. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes the encoder as converting content to a digital format and requires you to enter its server URL and stream key. The loop and the connection are separate: repeating a file does not supervise the encoder or reconnect it if the host or network fails.

- Prepare the program. Choose video files or a playlist whose music and visual assets you have permission to use.
- Configure FFmpeg. Set the input or playlist behavior and encode for YouTube’s supported ingest settings.
- Connect to YouTube Live. Send the output to the server URL using the stream key from YouTube Studio.
- Monitor and recover. Watch stream health and plan for failures of the media source, FFmpeg process, host, network, or YouTube ingest.
This is an operational design, not a guarantee of gapless transitions or 24/7 uptime. Validate your installed FFmpeg build and rehearse the exact setup before relying on it.

Your channel must be eligible for live streaming: it needs to be verified, live streaming must be enabled, and the account must not have live-streaming restrictions within the preceding 90 days. YouTube Help says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.

- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream in Live Control Room.
- Choose the encoder setup and copy the displayed server URL and stream key.
- Enter those values in your FFmpeg output configuration. Treat the stream key as a password: do not post it, commit it to a public script repository, or share it with anyone who does not need access.
- Start with a private or unlisted test stream if appropriate, and confirm that YouTube receives the expected picture and sound before making the broadcast public.

Choose ingest settings that fit your source and connection
YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Use settings supported by both your FFmpeg build and the selected YouTube ingest workflow. YouTube transcodes incoming video into multiple viewer formats, so you only need to send one supported ingest stream.
A practical 1080p30 H.264 reference
For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube Help’s encoder-settings table lists a 5 Mbps minimum and recommends 14 Mbps. These are YouTube’s ingest values for that codec, resolution, and frame-rate row, reviewed in 2026; the 14 Mbps recommendation is not a requirement that every synthwave visual needs that bitrate. For other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs, use the matching row in YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions rather than carrying this figure over.

Keyframes, rate control, and audio
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: set a two-second interval where supported; YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval must not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: use AAC or MP3 as supported by your encoder setup.
- Resolution and frame rate: select a setting your source and upload connection can sustain. Test the actual stream and monitor YouTube’s stream-health status before making it your unattended configuration.
The correct FFmpeg options depend on your input, output protocol, and installed build. Confirm them against that build’s help and test the resulting stream; a command copied without validation can fail or produce an unsuitable output.
Looping media is not the same as keeping the broadcast alive
FFmpeg’s input or playlist logic determines what plays next. A separate operational layer must deal with source completion, an FFmpeg process exit, host restart, interrupted network output, and YouTube ingest state. One successful loop does not prove the other failure cases are covered.
Use recovery deliberately
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation describes network-output recovery controls including attempt_recovery, a configurable wait between attempts, a maximum attempt count, and recover_any_error. It says network output can be restarted transparently after failure. The option drop_pkts_on_overflow can keep streaming without delaying input, but it does so at the cost of omitting part of the stream. Read the behavior and defaults for your installed version in the FFmpeg Formats Documentation; recovery settings do not make playback or uptime lossless.

Monitor and rehearse failure cases
Plan how you will detect a silent or stalled stream and restart the encoder if the process exits. A process supervisor and alerts are operational design choices, not a substitute for testing or a guarantee from FFmpeg’s documentation. Before going public, rehearse playlist transitions, an intentional network interruption, and an encoder restart, then verify that YouTube receives video and audio again.

Plan separately for the YouTube archive
YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” A continuous 24/7 broadcast is longer than that stated automatic-archive condition, so do not rely on a single uninterrupted broadcast being saved as one complete replay. Check the current Live Control Room behavior and make a separate recording or archive plan if you need a complete copy. Keeping the live stream running and preserving a replay are different requirements.
Clear music and visual rights before going live
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including other broadcasts. It may replace the picture with a placeholder and warn you; if the matched content continues, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. YouTube also says a live-stream Content ID claim may be issued against an archived stream after it ends. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

A license and Content ID allowlisting solve different problems. Even if you have licensed music, YouTube warns that a live stream can still be interrupted unless the rights holder adds your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Ask the rights owner about allowlisting and retain written permission. “Synthwave,” “royalty-free,” or an attribution line alone does not establish that you have the rights needed for a commercial or continuous broadcast.
- Confirm the permission covers the composition and the specific recording, not just one of them.
- Check that the license allows livestreaming, repeated playback, and any planned monetization or geographic availability.
- Clear visual assets, including artwork and looped footage, as well as the music.
- Ask the relevant rights holders whether your YouTube channel can be allowlisted in Content ID, and test with the intended material before launching.

It is an alternative for creators who do not want to operate their own always-on FFmpeg process. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use copyrighted synthwave music if I have a license?
A license does not necessarily prevent a live interruption: YouTube says the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm the license covers the intended broadcast and ask the owner about allowlisting.
Does one 24/7 YouTube stream automatically become a complete replay?
YouTube’s stated automatic-archive condition is for streams under 12 hours. A 24/7 broadcast exceeds it, so arrange a separate recording or archive if you need a complete copy.
