You send YouTube one live feed at a chosen resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate. YouTube then transcodes that incoming feed into multiple playback formats, so viewers can choose a suitable resolution for their device and connection. You generally do not need to send a separate stream for every viewer resolution—and setting your encoder to 1080p does not force everyone to watch at 1080p.
For a 24/7 channel, the key is to choose an ingest format your source and connection can sustain, keep the stream running reliably, and plan separately for archives and rewind. You can run the encoder on a computer or hardware device, or use a cloud service to play uploaded videos continuously.
Ingest resolution is not the same as viewer resolution
Your encoder sends one incoming feed to YouTube. YouTube processes that feed into multiple output formats for playback. The resolution you select in your encoder therefore describes the feed YouTube receives; it does not guarantee the resolution any particular viewer will see. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. For details, see YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
For a 24/7 stream, choose an ingest resolution and frame rate according to the source material, encoder capability and reliable upload capacity. A static scene may not need the same frame rate as fast-moving footage. Higher resolution or frame rate raises the recommended incoming bitrate, so a lower setting that remains stable can be preferable to a higher one that repeatedly stalls.

YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates
The following are YouTube’s recommended bitrates for encoder ingestion, in Mbps, by resolution, frame rate and codec. These are recommendations, not a guarantee of visual quality or proof that your connection can sustain the feed. YouTube also publishes minimum settings; check its current settings page when configuring your encoder. Values below were verified against YouTube Help on October 3, 2026; the page does not display a publication date.
| Ingest resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
Use the value for the codec and frame rate you actually configure; do not use the H.264 figure for an AV1 or H.265 stream. The figures are YouTube’s recommendations, not universal encoding presets.

Encoder settings that matter
- Protocol: YouTube’s general guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS.
- Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for live encoding. HDR has additional codec and protocol requirements; YouTube’s settings page excludes AV1 HDR support.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s general live encoder guidance supports up to 60 fps. Match the frame rate to the source and the bitrate table.
- Bitrate mode: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3.
- Resolution selection: Automatic detection is YouTube’s default recommendation. If you need manual ingest settings, create or select a custom stream key and enable “Turn on manual settings” under stream resolution.
At 2160p (4K), YouTube does not offer its low-latency option; 4K live streams are optimized for quality at normal latency. If real-time audience interaction matters more than maximum resolution, consider the latency setting separately: lower latency can mean more playback buffering. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and YouTube’s live-stream latency guidance.
Plan upload capacity for continuous streaming
Test your upload speed under conditions similar to the intended stream, including other traffic that will share the connection. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. If you send a primary and backup feed, include both in the capacity calculation. A speed-test result is not a guarantee that the connection will remain stable around the clock; interruptions can affect the stream.

- Allow at least the recommended 20% margin beyond the total outgoing bitrate, including any backup feed.
- If the connection cannot sustain that rate consistently, reduce resolution, frame rate or bitrate and test again.
- Use a stable network connection and monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages during operation.
YouTube’s network guidance, including the 20% headroom recommendation, is at YouTube Help’s live encoder settings page.
Choose how to keep the 24/7 feed running
YouTube lists software encoders, standalone hardware encoders and cloud tools as possible ways to send a live feed. Its encoder directory describes OBS as free, open-source streaming software and Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded videos. Those directory descriptions are not a comparative evaluation, and no specific encoder model is required by YouTube’s guidance.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set up and preflight the stream
- Confirm live eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours. Confirm eligibility and setup in YouTube Studio before scheduling a launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- Choose your source and feed format. Decide whether the channel will use a live production or prerecorded videos, then select resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate the encoder and connection can sustain.
- Configure the encoder and stream key. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream key into your encoder. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it with viewers. Use YouTube’s recommended ingest settings above, or automatic resolution detection unless you have a reason to set a custom resolution.
- Check the preview and stream health. Test with representative movement and audio, review the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages, and verify that viewers can access the event on the devices you intend to support.
- Test failover if configured. If you have a backup encoder or feed, test the switch before relying on it during unattended operation.
- Monitor after launch. Check stream health and messages during the initial run and periodically thereafter. Testing and monitoring help you catch problems; they do not guarantee uninterrupted service.
YouTube’s tips for encoder setup and preflight are in YouTube Help’s live-streaming guidance.

Plan recording, archives and rewind separately
A 24/7 live transmission should not be treated as a guaranteed complete video-on-demand archive. YouTube says a live stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. If you need a copy for editing, retention or recovery, keep a local recording backup and confirm your recording setup has enough storage. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance and YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Common problems and fixes
- Stream buffers, drops or shows poor health: The upload connection may be unstable or overloaded. Check stream-health messages, test upload capacity, leave the recommended headroom, reduce the feed bitrate or resolution if needed, and check other traffic sharing the connection.
- YouTube rejects the encoder feed: Confirm the stream key is the one associated with the current Live Control Room event, and check that the encoder’s protocol, codec and settings match YouTube’s supported guidance. Replace a key if it has been exposed.
- Manual resolution is unavailable: YouTube recommends automatic detection by default. For manual selection, use a custom stream key and enable “Turn on manual settings” under stream resolution.
- Viewers cannot select the resolution you expected: The encoder’s setting is the ingest feed, not a promise that every viewer will receive that same playback option. YouTube transcodes the feed into multiple formats; check the event’s processing and playback rather than assuming the ingest setting dictates each viewer’s choice.
- The archive is incomplete or rewind is missing: Long streams may not be fully captured or rewindable beyond 12 hours. Keep a local recording when a complete archive matters.
- 4K viewers experience a latency trade-off: YouTube does not provide its low-latency option for 2160p streams. If rapid interaction is essential, weigh that against the resolution choice.
