To reduce memory use on a Windows PC that plays YouTube music around the clock, first find which processes are using RAM. If Chrome is the main consumer, use Chrome’s Task Manager to identify a specific tab, extension, or background page, then reduce work you do not need. Chrome Memory Saver can unload eligible inactive tabs; it is not a way to unload the tab actively playing audio.
Find out what is using memory first
High memory use by itself does not tell you what needs fixing. Check whether Chrome is actually responsible before changing browser settings, disabling startup apps, or considering a hardware upgrade.
Check Windows Task Manager
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- In Processes, review the Memory column and identify large applications you recognize. On some Windows versions, you may need to select More details to see the full view.
- Open Performance and select Memory to see overall memory use. If another application, rather than Chrome, is taking most of the memory, investigate that application first.
Task Manager labels and layout can vary between Windows 10 and Windows 11. Do not end unfamiliar Windows or system processes simply because they use memory; doing so can disrupt the PC.
Find the specific Chrome task
- In Chrome, open More tools > Task Manager.
- Select the Memory column to sort tasks by memory use.
- Look for identifiable tabs, extensions, or entries labeled Background page. Close or end only a task you recognize and do not need.
Ending a task can close a page or discard unsaved work. If the YouTube tab playing music is the largest Chrome task, that does not automatically mean it is malfunctioning: it is doing the work you want the PC to keep doing.

Use Chrome Memory Saver for tabs you are not using
In Chrome, open Settings > Performance and turn on Memory Saver. It deactivates eligible inactive tabs to free resources; a deactivated tab reloads when you select it again.
Choose a Memory Saver level
- Moderate: Provides moderate savings and waits longer before tabs become inactive.
- Balanced: Chrome’s recommended level, balancing savings with keeping tabs available.
- Maximum: Deactivates tabs after a shorter inactive period for greater savings.
The names or availability of settings can change as Chrome updates. If you do not see these options, check that Chrome is up to date and review the current Performance settings.

Leave the music tab playing
Google lists active audio or video playback among the activities that can keep a tab from being deactivated. Keep the YouTube tab open and playing; Memory Saver is mainly useful for other eligible tabs, not for unloading the tab providing the audio.
If another page must remain loaded for your workflow, use Settings > Performance > Always keep these sites active to add it. Google documents URL patterns for this setting, including a YouTube watch URL example. Excluding a site is a convenience trade-off: its page remains active and continues using resources instead of being discarded.

Reduce unnecessary Chrome and Windows background work
Trim browser work carefully
Use Chrome Task Manager to connect a high-memory task to a tab, extension, or background page before acting. Remove extensions you no longer use, and review Chrome’s preload settings if you do not need the associated background work. Make one change at a time and observe the result; disabling an extension you rely on can break your workflow.
Review Windows apps and startup
- In Windows Task Manager, open Startup apps (called Startup in some versions).
- Disable automatic launch only for apps you recognize and do not need running when Windows starts.
- Close applications you are not using, then check Task Manager again to see whether memory use changed.
Windows Task Manager can also help you monitor CPU and disk activity. If the PC is sluggish but memory is not the main resource under pressure, investigate the resource that is actually high rather than applying a generic RAM fix.

Know when memory may be a hardware limit
Microsoft’s general guidance says to aim for at least 4 GB of memory if you primarily browse the web, work on documents, or stream videos online; it recommends 8 GB to keep a device running long term. These are broad recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular always-on streaming PC will run well with that amount or evidence that your PC needs more RAM.
Before buying memory, check how much RAM the PC has and whether memory use remains constrained after unnecessary browser and Windows tasks are reduced. A purchase decision also depends on the computer’s platform and upgrade compatibility; neither the PC model nor its specifications are known here.

Windows’ default virtual-memory settings are generally expected to perform optimally. Manually changing the page file is not a first-line way to reduce memory consumption, so leave it at its default unless you have a specific, diagnosed reason to change it.
Common problems and what to try
- Memory Saver is on, but the YouTube music tab stays active: Active audio or video can prevent a tab from being deactivated. That is expected for the tab providing continuous playback; use Memory Saver to manage other eligible tabs.
- A page reloads when you return to it: Memory Saver deactivates inactive tabs, which reload when selected. Choose a less aggressive level or add a necessary site under Always keep these sites active.
- Chrome uses a lot of memory, but the cause is unclear: Open Chrome Task Manager, sort by Memory, and inspect recognizable tabs, extensions, and background pages. Change or end only tasks you can identify.
- The PC is still slow after closing unneeded work: Check Windows Task Manager’s memory, CPU, and disk activity to identify the resource under pressure. Do not assume a RAM upgrade or page-file change is the answer without that diagnosis.
