The important caveat: “24/7” describes your intended schedule, not guaranteed uptime. YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, so make a separate local recording if you need a replay.
Before you start
- A Windows PC capable of encoding your chosen video settings, OBS Studio, and a reliable internet connection with enough upload bandwidth.
- A YouTube channel that is verified and eligible to livestream. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility and enable streaming before your planned launch in YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Your video and audio source. Test with content that represents the motion and sound you intend to stream.
- Enough local disk space if you plan to record a backup. For continuous operation, a wired connection and a UPS may help reduce avoidable network or brief power interruptions; neither guarantees uninterrupted streaming.
Set up YouTube Live and connect OBS
- Confirm livestream eligibility. In YouTube Studio, check that live streaming is enabled and that the channel has no current live-streaming restrictions. If this is the channel’s first time streaming, allow up to 24 hours for enablement.
- Create an encoder stream. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown there, or use YouTube’s service option in OBS if available. The key lets an encoder connect to your channel, so treat it like a password and do not share or display it.
- Connect OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service and follow the available connection flow, or choose a custom streaming service and enter the server URL and stream key supplied by YouTube. Apply the settings.
- Configure video and output. Open Settings > Video to select a base canvas and output resolution and frame rate. Under Settings > Output, set the streaming encoder and bitrate. YouTube’s recommendations are a starting point, not a promise that a particular computer can encode reliably.
- Start with a controlled test. Start streaming in OBS and inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health before sharing the watch page or announcing the channel. Use a test audience or an unlisted stream where appropriate, and check it on the devices viewers are likely to use.
OBS labels can vary by version and by whether you use the YouTube connection flow or a custom server. The essential connection details are the current YouTube server destination and stream key; do not substitute a guessed URL or an old key.

Choose OBS settings that fit your connection
For a straightforward standard dynamic range (SDR) setup, YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. The recommended keyframe frequency should not exceed four seconds. Prefer RTMPS when available for encrypted transport. YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1, but hardware support and encoding capability vary across Windows PCs. See YouTube’s current encoder settings table for other resolutions and codecs.

These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingestion bitrates, not guarantees of stable encoding or delivery. Higher resolution and frame rate need more bitrate and greater encoding capacity. Pick a combination your PC can sustain and verify it with a representative test.

Check upload bandwidth, not just download speed
Measure the internet connection’s outbound upload capacity. YouTube recommends keeping the total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. Shared network use can reduce the bandwidth available to the streaming PC, so test under realistic household or office conditions. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Validate the picture, sound, and health indicators
- Include representative motion and audio in the test; a static image alone may not reveal problems that appear with your actual content.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before relying on the public watch page.
- Watch stream health and real-time metrics during the test and operation. YouTube explains the available metrics in its live stream metrics guide.
- Confirm viewers can reach the stream from the channel or watch page and on mobile devices, and keep monitoring audio and video as YouTube recommends in its live streaming tips.
Plan for 24/7 operation and interruptions
A Windows PC and OBS require power, a working network path, and a functioning encoder. A dropped connection or other interruption can stop delivery; the official guidance cited here does not establish guaranteed end-to-end uptime or a failover configuration for a Windows PC running OBS. Plan to check both YouTube’s stream health and OBS/network state regularly, and decide who will respond if the feed stops.

OBS notes that network-path problems can cause dropped frames and intermittent disconnections. If that happens, consult the OBS stream connection troubleshooting guide, then check whether the connection and settings recover under a fresh test. Do not assume a reconnect means the stream has resumed correctly for viewers.

Will YouTube archive a 24/7 livestream?
Not reliably as one complete replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous live feed and a retained replay are separate outcomes. If keeping the content matters, record locally in OBS and verify that the recording file grows and is usable; YouTube also recommends a local archive backup. Review YouTube’s archive guidance before relying on an automatic replay.

For a long recording, check the destination drive’s free space against the intended retention period. A recording that stops because the disk fills is not a dependable archive. If replay retention is essential, test the complete local recording and storage workflow before relying on it.
Run a launch and monitoring checklist
- Verify channel eligibility and enable livestreaming early enough for first-time activation.
- Confirm OBS is using the current YouTube destination and key; keep the key private.
- Test with the intended motion, audio, resolution, and frame rate.
- Measure upload bandwidth and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Check the Live Control Room preview, stream health, and viewer access.
- If recording locally, confirm the file is increasing in size and that the drive has sufficient free space.
- Define how someone will notice a disconnection and check OBS, the network, and YouTube after an interruption.

Can OBS keep a YouTube stream running if I turn off my Windows PC?
